normally, i'm not one to hang quilts on the walls.
but i am slowly changing my mind.
this quilt really helps to persuade me to do so!
it's too white for a baby quilt. or a throw.
but perfect for my front entry wall.
this is the back-i LOVE the one little strip of patchwork.
this quilt is all scraps, except for the binding-i even pieced the batting.
all the little colored bits were pieces that were minuscule, but i still couldn't bear to throw them away. i'm so glad that i didn't! that being said, this was a very intense quilt to piece. it took me a long time.
i stitched a sleeve to the top, then inserted a dowel for hanging.
most of the colored scraps are only about 1" wide.
i quilted it on the diagonal using a walking foot and 2" wide tape for marking the lines. i chose a grid pattern for a few reasons: there are so many seams both in the front and the back-i was afraid that it would get bunchy if i stippled it. plus, stippling is hard on my arms. the straight line quilting (especially on this scale) was much easier. actually, i think jacquie is rubbing off on me. ;) she does gorgeous grid quilting.
the final piece measures 32" x 47".

ReplyDeleteQuilts on the wall are the BEST kind of art! Usually my wall quilts are the ones that couldn't be used on a bed because of embellishments like folded fabrics, sequins and crystals, or they are just small, but I think any quilt is able to be appreciated in a new way when hung. And you can always safety-pin the sleeve onto the back of a quilt if you want to hang it for a bit and then also use it on a bed. This quilt of yours once again contributes to my absolute inability to ever throw away a scrap of fabric!

Do you have a walking foot that has a little measuring thing on the side (yes, I know, not explained well)? If you do, then you don't have to worry about taping!

ReplyDeleteI think this is so neat! I was doing some stocking up of fabric at Joann's at their recent winter sale, and the woman cutting my fabric was talking about quilting. You had just recently posted a picture of the top so I was desribing it to her and how neat of an idea it was and how pretty I thought it was.

ReplyDeleteDo you have any tips on piecing batting? I've heard placing the pieces side by side and zig-zagging them together is best. How do you do it? I've never thrown batting away...so now I have a big, tumbling pile of leftovers.

ReplyDeletesince i have no zig zag stitch on my machine, i used a needle and handquilting thread and just did a loose whip stitch by hand. one thing i would recommend to do is to line up the 2 straight edges from the manufacturer-it makes it easier to join the pieces.

When you use the tape to mark the diagonals do you use one piece and move it or do you tape the entire quilt one direction and then remove and repeat for the other direction?
It looks like you made it just for that spot on the wall. I love how it turned out.
ReplyDeleteI am constantly inspired by your quilts. This is a great idea to use those scraps and pieces of stash that might not get used otherwise. I think wall quilts and doll quilts are great for practicing new piecing ideas and quilting! You don't have to make a huge commitment when you make a wall hanging. PLUS, they add a bit of insulation to the walls too for sound and warmth. :)

ReplyDeletewhen i taped the quilt to mark it, i placed one piece in about the center. then i pinned my quilt to baste it. i quilted on either side of the piece of tape. then, i removed the tape and moved it over to the other side of the quilted line. and i added another piece of tape on the other side of the quilting line-so i had it marked for two at a time. so then i quilted two lines, moved the tape out, quilted more, and just repeated that pattern until it was all quilted. then i started over on the other diagonal. i hope that makes sense!

I just quilted a lap quilt on the diagonal but it became bumpy in some sections, how can I avoid that and when I do quilt boarder in the ditch the fabric stretches and I end up with extra fabric at the bottom of the quilt or the back is gathered. Is there a way to fix it.

ReplyDeleteOh, I'm so jealous! Yours looks fabulous! I just finished a small one for my son's bedroom door using the same method and I'm not crazy about it. Thankfully, he likes it though. He picked out all the fabrics; even snippets from pj's I'd made him. I like your idea of using only 1" pieces; think I used too many 2" pieces. And I like the way you quilted it too. Might try it again using up pieces from baby clothing; figure it might work even with knits. Anyways, great job as always!!
