normally, i'm not one to hang quilts on the walls.
but i am slowly changing my mind.
this quilt really helps to persuade me to do so!
it's too white for a baby quilt. or a throw.
but perfect for my front entry wall.

this is the back-i LOVE the one little strip of patchwork.

this quilt is all scraps, except for the binding-i even pieced the batting.

all the little colored bits were pieces that were minuscule, but i still couldn't bear to throw them away. i'm so glad that i didn't! that being said, this was a very intense quilt to piece. it took me a long time.

i stitched a sleeve to the top, then inserted a dowel for hanging.

most of the colored scraps are only about 1" wide.

i quilted it on the diagonal using a walking foot and 2" wide tape for marking the lines. i chose a grid pattern for a few reasons: there are so many seams both in the front and the back-i was afraid that it would get bunchy if i stippled it. plus, stippling is hard on my arms. the straight line quilting (especially on this scale) was much easier. actually, i think jacquie is rubbing off on me. ;) she does gorgeous grid quilting.

the final piece measures 32" x 47".

again, the tutorial is here.

I LOVE this quilt!!!!!!!!!

  3. I totally agree about not hanging quilts on the wall but this one looks great. I used to say "quilt are for couches and beds, not walls." But dare I say, I might have to do a wall quilt soon. :) thats for all the inspiration.

  4. i love it too! the grid quilting is perfect on this!

  8. Quilts on the wall are the BEST kind of art! Usually my wall quilts are the ones that couldn't be used on a bed because of embellishments like folded fabrics, sequins and crystals, or they are just small, but I think any quilt is able to be appreciated in a new way when hung. And you can always safety-pin the sleeve onto the back of a quilt if you want to hang it for a bit and then also use it on a bed. This quilt of yours once again contributes to my absolute inability to ever throw away a scrap of fabric!

  15. It looks great! I love it. You have given me courage to maybe try some on walls, too. I love grid quilting because it is so easy. Do you have a walking foot that has a little measuring thing on the side (yes, I know, not explained well)? If you do, then you don't have to worry about taping!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Wow - that is not simply a quilt hanging on the wall, that is a work of art! It couldn't be more perfect in that spot!!

  19. Way cute. What a fun splash of color. I just finished quilting a baby quilt on the diagonal grid too...mostly because I'm not very daring with my quilting...and it's quick and easy :)

  20. I LOVE it, and it looks awesome on your wall. I'm a little anti wall quilt myself, but this one looks like a work of art that belongs on a wall. It's safe there from food spills and other gross things. It's glorious!

  21. I think this is so neat! I was doing some stocking up of fabric at Joann's at their recent winter sale, and the woman cutting my fabric was talking about quilting. You had just recently posted a picture of the top so I was desribing it to her and how neat of an idea it was and how pretty I thought it was.

  22. erinmalia,

i just pushed two straight pins into the wall and placed the dowel on the pins.

  45. Looks great in your entryway!

Do you have any tips on piecing batting? I've heard placing the pieces side by side and zig-zagging them together is best. How do you do it? I've never thrown batting away...so now I have a big, tumbling pile of leftovers.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Absolutely STUNNING! What a beautiful quilt. It looks fabulous in your front hall on the wall. I'm inspired to sew one just like it, thank you for the tutorial!!

  50. holly,

since i have no zig zag stitch on my machine, i used a needle and handquilting thread and just did a loose whip stitch by hand. one thing i would recommend to do is to line up the 2 straight edges from the manufacturer-it makes it easier to join the pieces.

    i hope that helps!

    aj

    ReplyDelete
  51. It really does look perfect.
You might not see this but...

When you use the tape to mark the diagonals do you use one piece and move it or do you tape the entire quilt one direction and then remove and repeat for the other direction?

    ReplyDelete
  52. It looks like you made it just for that spot on the wall. I love how it turned out.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I am constantly inspired by your quilts. This is a great idea to use those scraps and pieces of stash that might not get used otherwise. I think wall quilts and doll quilts are great for practicing new piecing ideas and quilting! You don't have to make a huge commitment when you make a wall hanging. PLUS, they add a bit of insulation to the walls too for sound and warmth. :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'm impressed with your backs -- how you have them all pieced. I'm afraid that the backs are what will ruin my fabric-buying ban. See how good you are peicing them all with such miniscule pieces! I'll take inspiration from you (again) and dig a little deeper for the backing. I love how this quilt turned out!

    ReplyDelete
  58. It is so pretty and scrappy! I love it against your green walls :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. laurelness,

when i taped the quilt to mark it, i placed one piece in about the center. then i pinned my quilt to baste it. i quilted on either side of the piece of tape. then, i removed the tape and moved it over to the other side of the quilted line. and i added another piece of tape on the other side of the quilting line-so i had it marked for two at a time. so then i quilted two lines, moved the tape out, quilted more, and just repeated that pattern until it was all quilted. then i started over on the other diagonal. i hope that makes sense!

let me know if you have more questions!

    aj

  76. That quilt is so stunning! Then again, so is the whirlygiggles! I am curious, what kind of tape did you use on the quilt? Is it quilting tape or is there a "cheaper" alternative like masking tape? I've never done that kind of quilting before.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Wow again! How absolutely PERFECT does it look on that wall. Such a great idea for those little scraps too.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Just beautiful. Sigh.
The quilting goes well with the quilt.
After all the struggle I had marking the lines for the "little-bits" quilt, I am really curious about how you do the tape marking.

  91. Great work on the quilting. I just quilted a lap quilt on the diagonal but it became bumpy in some sections, how can I avoid that and when I do quilt boarder in the ditch the fabric stretches and I end up with extra fabric at the bottom of the quilt or the back is gathered. Is there a way to fix it.
    Sylvia F :)

    ReplyDelete
  92. sylvia,

i'm not sure how to fix it, but you can check out my basting tutorial (one way to baste a quilt) in my sidebar under the tutorial section. also, did you use a walking foot? that helps to eliminate bumps.

  102. Amanda Jean, I tried patchwork ages ago and hated it. You have inspired me to try again. I have just enrolled in a class at my local patchwork shop! Seems last time I was taught a very tedious and not fun method of patchwork.

I love the way you use colour!

I also like the bubbly look your quilts have. Do you get that by not prewashing your fabric?

Thanks for inspiring me to try again.

  109. the wild child,

i think the bubbly texture of my quilts comes from the quilting. but i do not pre-wash my fabrics. i haven't washed or dried this quilt yet. but once i do, i should have even more texture.

    i hope that helps!

Oh, I'm so jealous! Yours looks fabulous! I just finished a small one for my son's bedroom door using the same method and I'm not crazy about it. Thankfully, he likes it though. He picked out all the fabrics; even snippets from pj's I'd made him. I like your idea of using only 1" pieces; think I used too many 2" pieces. And I like the way you quilted it too. Might try it again using up pieces from baby clothing; figure it might work even with knits. Anyways, great job as always!!

Gorgeous quilt, and i love it hanging in your hallway, it looks very 'arty'. I have a question. Youve mentioned that you like using muslin as the backing for your quilts. Do you mean the muslin, like what you use in baby wraps? Or is there a different type? Thankyou.

    ReplyDelete
  140. alinta,

i use muslin in the front of some of my quilts, too. i like to use bleached muslin. i'm not sure what you use for baby wraps, but it's probably the same thing. i hope that helps.
