knitting

thank you, thank you, thank you for all of the nice comments on my snippets quilt! i appreciate each and every one. my son saw it on the wall when he came home from school and he said, "i like the other one better." i had to laugh. he likes change about as much as his mama does. :)
-----------
i've been knitting. a lot. it's been crazy cold here, so i have a good reason to finish up all these projects. the sooner the better!

mistake stitch scarf

i love the texture...it's an easy knit...and the name...could you ask for anything better? i mean, it's got mistake in the title! that's my kind of knitting project. :) i'm nearly done with this one...(this photo was taken a few weeks ago). oh, and the fact that it's pink AND orange makes me giddy.

chunky knit beanie

i had this yarn on hand and it was intended for a scarf, but that didn't work out.
so it's going to be a hat for my daughter instead.
this is my second try. i knit it in the round the first time and it had obvious problems. (i'm a rookie.) this time i am knitting it flat, then i will sew it up. it's looking much better. (yay)

my so called scarf

this is for my neighbor mary. she picked out the yarn + color. isn't it fabulous? i knit this pattern once before in orange and i gave it to heather. (she finally started a blog!) next time i knit this scarf pattern, i'm keeping it. :)

i am beyond excited about these....i LOVE fingerless gloves. i can't believe that i'm actually knitting on DPN's!
if these mitts work out, i can see having a collection of them in every color imaginable.
thank you leslie for sharing such great patterns!

this is my first attempt at a sock. it's supposed to be a spiral knit sock (therefore no heel) but it's not working out quite right. i'm going to keep trying.

after i'm finished with all of these, i have several requests from my boys for scarves and hand warmers. too bad their favorite color of yarn is camo. we might have to negotiate that one.

  1. I think it's funny you have me knitting you "camo" socks. I don't know about those spiral knit socks, but I've found the best way to learn to knit socks is with a thicker yarn so you have fewer stitches to figure out, like what Anina and I did to teach her to knit them.

I just discovered you blog and love it. I completely understand the urge to knit warm things now since I am also in Wisconsin (Stevens Point).

I love pink and orange together! I've found quite a few things to put in my kitchen. My husband likes orange so he is willing to put up with the pink :)

  4. oohhh!! love all your knitting projects!!! i got a dvd at the library (i think this is the third time i've checked it out) called "learn to knit". now i need to sit and learn! :) i want to make some beanies for my kiddos since i bought a few beanie hat books, but they won't do much good if i don't learn how to knit first! :)

  12. My son wanted me to make him a camo hat for christmas so I found some dark green yarn and then some brownish yarn (sorry no better word than brownish is coming to mind :) It turned out ok, but I saw a camo mix of yarn at Joanne's a few weeks ago! Just thought I'd let you know! (Thanks for your blog.....I check it ALL the time. You have taught me so much and get me so excited to sew since I'm a beginner! Thank you, thank-you, thank-you!)

  16. I knit sometimes, too. Mostly blanket or scarfs. I tried hat using 4 needles but didnt get the size right. One project I started two years ago but didnt finish! Just knit when I have a restless hand before I go bed, take a look if you have time... http://holtgallery.wordpress.com/2008/11/16/a-eternal-project/
I wonder when will I finish it off?

  17. I haven't tried knitting in EONS - since I was in Girl Scouts many moons ago. Your knitting looks great!

You may remember from earlier emails/comments I was making my first quilt and it is now finished! I'd be thrilled if you have a mn. to stop by and take a peek!

And, believe it or not, I've started on quilt #2! You can read a little about it there too if you care to. Thanks for all your inspiration!

  18. Oh my gosh woman, you're as crazy with your knitting as you are with your quilting! That mistake scarf looks suspiciously like a scarf I just finished, but I checked the pattern and it's not knit the same way. Your yarn is much prettier than mine!

  19. I am amazed with all your projects in progress! My little Owen would run away with my needles if i even tried :) oh and thanks for the links!

I'm a knitter as well as a quilter, and just wait until you get to know how to do socks, they are highly addictive! You are knitting like a pro! I love the pattern on that blue number you show there.

  26. I love the variety of colours in you're knitting projects, they're much like your scrap quilt in the post below. The creative quilter in your comes out even in your knitting.
    Toast from Leslie are wonderful.
    Happy Knitting!

  27. Jitterbug has a sock yarn that is camo like. You may want to check it out for your men. It would be good for hats, mittens, and of course socks!

Would love to know where you got the pink and orange yarn and what it is1

Socks are a lot of fun and I love DPNs. The heels really aren't that hard though I would try and have a friend show me how to do it.

it's funny, I got my yarn and needles out last night, and I could not for the life of me cast on correctly. So I gave up. I'm going to have to find someone to help me!

    Your knitting looks gorgeous!

  32. My first sock was the spiral sock. It was such a challenge all of that spiral action really blew me away. But aren't those Toasties wonderful?

Thanks for stopping by the blog and leaving a note! I always look forward to hearing from you.

    Love your snippets quilt, too!

PS--I had to laugh at my word verification on this post. It is BOILYME. I think the blog fairies are laughing since your post was about how cold it is!

  35. PPS--Thanks for the tip on the CrockPot Blog! I'm checking that out for sure. I am stunned at how much quilting you get done. Fabulous stuff!

  41. fun projects! Nothing beats knitting in the wintertime, does it? :)

  42. Okay, I have to ask..... when do you SLEEP! Honestly, my husband asks me all the time "what are you making now?" because I spend all my "free time" at the sewing machine, and I only knock off a couple quilts a year. You are AMAZING!!! I must need to be better organized or something. Love that you knit too! I try, but have yet to see anything finished.

  43. Seeing all this knitting stuff makes me want to learn. I can knit, but that's it. No purl. Nothing fancy. I want to learn now. Do you think you could do a knitting tutorial? LOL

  44. I'm glad to see you knitting lots, Amandajean! Don't you find it just SO relaxing and rewarding? The mistake rib is a good one!

Once you complete your projects, you might consider knitting 7x9 pieces with whatever pattern you wish. Make lots in different colors & patterns, then crochet around with a row or two of single crochet (same color yarn on each one). Then sew all of these together for a knitted "quilt". Nice and warm, these are!

  45. My goodness, woman! So many knitting projects - when will you find time to quilt? Actually, I'm always happy to see the other creative outlets in your life. In fact, I've been wondering if you've been doing anything with paper projects recently. I always loved your cards...

  46. Crazy Mom knits too!!!! Loving all your yarn but especially the first photo..that yarn is beautiful. You sure know how to keep busy don't you?

  48. Take a look at my latest post
    http://suzyqsparkle.blogspot.com/2009/01/knitting-links.html

It's full of knitting links, including a sock tutorial that's AWESOME for beginners (like you and me!)

Also. Have you checked out Ravelry.com? You MUST! It's full of patterns and ideas. My fav part is that I can enter a yarn and then see other projects people have made (and often commented on). It gives me ideas on just WHAT I can do with yarn... which seems MUCH more confusing to me that fabric. Anyway, go. Request membership at Raverly and in a few days you'll be on your way to LOTS of ideas for yarn crafts!

  49. About troble with teh spiral socks
    there is a tutorial here:
    http://knittingcrochet.suite101.com/article.cfm/spiral_socks_without_heels

I think you should pay attention to this:
The next round: P1, *k4, p4* to last 3 st, end p 3, repeat for four rounds.

Next round: P2, *k4, p4* to last 2 st, p2, repeat for four rounds.

Next round: P3, *k4, p4* to last 3 st, p1, repeat for four rounds.

See the p increases with one per row, so that you shift your pattern 1 stitch to the rigth for every row,

Hey! I am making the SAME toasty fingerless gloves. I made one for me to try the pattern out. And I am making a pair for each of my little girls. They are so darn cute. All of your knitting looks great. And I can't get over how amazingly cute your little pumpkin is in her hat!! I just want to smoosh her little cheeks. x

  51. A couple a years ago, our local craft store, Pat Catan's offered free yarn if you made a scarf or hat for a soldier in Afghanistan or Iraq. I didn't realize it gets really cold there at times? Anyhow, the yarn was camo!! I will dig out the paper and email you later with it. Of course, you are so snappy fast, you probably already made them?
