plain spoken, again

I finished another plain spoken quilt. I adore this pattern. This quilt was part of baby quilt week, but it is actually more like a lap size-it measures 46" x 56". The pattern is from The Modern Quilt Workshop.

The backing fabric is decorator weight. I picked up this stuff for $1.29 a yard! It's extra wide, so no piecing was required. It also makes the quilt heavier, which I like.

I went through the trouble of making bias binding, which was totally worth it. I love that detail on this quilt.

My intent of baby quilt week was to make quilts for charity. I'm not doing so well with that...I doubt I will be able to give this one up. I love this quilt, but my daughter really doesn't need 6 quilts in her room, so I'm torn. Either way, though, it does feel good to have it finished, because my "in progress" list was beginning to scare me.

  4. Oh it's so nice!! I know what you mean about not being able to let quilts go... it hurts my heart every time I give one away! But the happiness from the recipient helps...

  10. If you ever want to send a quilt to a wonderful charity check out www.lovewithoutboundaires.com. They would use your quilt in their annual art auction which raises funds for orphan children who need heart surgery! I love your quilts! You are such an inspiration!

  13. I love your plain spoken quilt. Nice fabric choices. I am hand quilting the Spice Market quilt right now. It's a very similar design by Bill & Weeks using their fabric line. Can't wait to sleep under it this winter.

  14. The machine quilting is modern, too, and matches the quilt very nicely. I don't blame you for not wanting to give it up.

  15. Love the animal print! The quilt is just lovely.

And the bias gingham. I think I have to agree that it was worth it. I love the diagonal lines of the gingham when it's cut on the bias. Otherwise, those lines just never look straight. :-)

  18. Whoa there - decorator fabric?!? - Is it all cotten? What kind of batting do you use? I think you may have again opened up new possiblities for us. $1.29 a yard!!

  19. Oh it looks great! Are those AmyB solids? Love the bias binding - the added detail is great for such a plain spoken quilt :)

If you hang on to the quilt for a while you may find the perfect person to give it to - just a thought.

  20. I really like this quilt. I sometimes use decorator fabric on the backs too. Some of them have really fantastic designs. This is the second time I have seen that Plain and Simple quilt and will have to look into them, hmmm.

  22. Love it! The backing is perfection! I always wondered if it was "okay" to use a different weight on the back. Guess so! :)

  24. I really enjoy your quilts and your blog. I have intended to start quilting for about 30 years and I think your baby quilts are the thing that will get me beyond hoarding fabric!

  25. Yet another simple, modern pattern that appeals perfectly to my design sense. I don't blame you - I wouldn't be able to part with this one, either.

  27. Oh my goodness, I love everything that you do. And that you can do it all with little ones around, well, you have my complete admiration!

I LOVE this quilt and want to make it for my married daughter for a TV throw. Lap size, I guess that would be. Would you recommend making the rectangles larger or keeping them the same size as the crib?

    Thanks for your inspiring posts.

  32. diane,

I would recommend making the rectangles the same size as the pattern, no matter what size you make your quilt. easier math calculations that way. :)

Beautiful quilt! Love the colors and the back! It will be hard for me, too, to part with it!

  36. So beautiful! I love that this is fairly low contrast--it has a different look than high-contrast Plain Spokens do.

The bias binding really looks splendid. I have some pink gingham that I've been saving for the same reason, but it's quite thin, so I have to find out whether it's too sheer (meaning too many different layers of stripes will show through.)

If you are having trouble deciding on charity quilts, maybe your daughter can help you choose one for charity? That way she will have a part in it, too?

  37. I love this quilt!! Just starting out myself, but I'm working on my second quilt and I think this one will have to be my third!! Thanks for sharing, and the quilting is beautiful!!

  41. So lovely, Amandajean! I love not having to piece fabric for a backing and I adore gingham fabric cut on the bias for binding. This is such a sweet quilt that I totally understand you feeling torn about giving it away.
