ragged squares

I started a new quilt project yesterday.

It's really out of my comfort zone, as far as colors are concerned, but I am enjoying the challenge.

What I did was take 3 squares (cut 9", 6" and 3"), layered them all on top of each other and sewed around the edges of the smaller two squares with about a quarter inch seam. The edges will fray over time. I did not cut out the backs of the squares (to reduce bulk) because I think I will like the thickness that the multiple layers of fabric will add. Once it is quilted and washed the texture will be fabulous. I got the idea from a sample in a quilt shop that was done in katie jump rope fabrics. It was gorgeous.

On a side note, it is roxanne's birthday today, so if you have a minute, go wish her a happy birthday!

  3. I'm doing something very similar, only instead of squares I've made them into abstract 3-layered flowers. It's a less- scary way to ease into applique, I think. I got the idea out of "Quilt Pink", I believe it's called "French Roses".

  5. That's funny I was just thinking of doing a quilt like this, with the frayed edges I mean. I was thinking of using old camo pants...

  6. This is going to look even more wonderful when the fabric edges fray over time - especially with the soft colours you've chosen and the simple graphic design of the blocks.

I love the colors Amanda! Especially the blues and yellows together.

  9. Cute! I love the colors. That is sort of a different version of what I did with Alli's quilt, only I used circles instead of squares on hers. Can't wait to see it finished!

Oohh! I love this, and I have a few Katie Jump Rope fabrics in my stash too. How are you planning on quilting it? Are you going to do squares within the squares? I might have to try this one, I have done lots of the flannel rag quilts and I love those, but this one could be for me!

I like that idea, it would make up quickly and be a wonderfully qozy blanket.

  13. Cool! I made a chenille quilt with plain cottons that has 4 layers on each block and it has a nice weight to it.

I LOVE your spectrum quilt! How are you going to quilt it??

  19. Looks great! I like the idea of getting frayed edges. Might have to put that on the "want to try list." And by the way...I forgot to comment on the Quilt a Long. I am caught up except for this week. I will have it done by Monday, though. I don't ever like to go into the next week with the current one not finished!

  23. Thanks for sending so many birthday wishes my way! I can't wait to see how this quilt turns out. I think I actually have a pattern for something similar to this. Never tried it of course, but maybe I will have to!

  24. Oh, thanks for the idea. It should be a great stash buster. I've made the French Roses and love that but this looks nice and speedy. I want speedy to use up stash before I can start buying more fabric.

  25. Oooh - this does seem like a departure for you! I like the idea of some unfinished edges and of the stacking - both seem a bit different than what your natural tendencies would be. I like that you're testing your boundaries!
