My sewing room is feeling a little full these days because I have so many works in progress...I'm afraid to count how many! I figured it was high time to get working on a finish, so this weekend I decided to baste my black licorice quilt. I prefer to pin baste because I get the best results. (I have a basting tutorial here that you might find helpful.)
I'm quilting a simple cross hatch through the black rectangles. I'm living on the edge and I'm NOT marking my lines before I quilt them. So far, so good! Quilting with black thread on black fabric is pretty forgiving. Also, the rectangles are small (2" x 1 1/2" finished), so eyeballing it isn't too hard. I'm moving right along with the quilting, thankfully! My goal is to finish the quilting and apply the binding before Thanksgiving day, so hopefully I can sit and relax with some hand stitching after cooking all day! It should be fun!
Do you have your hand stitching planned out for the holiday yet? Or am I the only one that does that?
Happy Monday to you!
Hand stitching planning for the holidays is smart! I haven't considered that kind of planning, but it sure has my thinking that I might be able to pull something off!
ReplyDeleteWOW This quilt is stunning! I am working on cutting all my scraps. Love the use of the solids! Hand Stitching another wow! I have not tried that yet. But I am trying to get some finished in as I feel like you in my sewing room "UFO City" I like to do my bindings by hand and perfect sit down work for visiting during the holidays! I can't wait to see your finished hand work. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteSuch a gorgeous quilt. Yes..hand stitching must be planned before the holidays!
ReplyDeleteThis looks amazing! I would like to know why you don't use your Juki to do the straight stitching? Happy Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteI never thought of doing my hand stitching over the Holiday's. Perhaps that will be my new "to do". Thanks!!
Ooh super cool! I am also working on a licorice inspired quilt - all the colours of licorice allsorts (as we call them here in NZ).
ReplyDeleteI love your black licorice quilt. I do have a quilt ready for hand stitching. Yum.
ReplyDeleteLooking good! No, I don’t have my holiday handstitching prepped, but I need to buckle down and decide what to do. I’ll be traveling soon and a 'to go' project makes the long hours navigating air travel tolerable.
ReplyDeleteI have my priority list of projects planned out, but that is as detailed as I get. Oh, I also have my priority list for the kitchen too!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the reminder to get a handwork project ready for this weekend! I love your quilt and can't wait to see it all quilted!
ReplyDeleteI do the same thing, queen size quilt was picked up from the long arm quilter last Saturday, binding is cut and pressed. I am hoping to get the binding on the front tomorrow, to be able to hand stitch it to the back while watching the Macy Parade on Thursday morning! Happy Thanksgiving
ReplyDeleteThis is a stunning quilt. I love the black against all the vibrant colors, it's beautiful. I look forward to seeing it finished.
ReplyDeleteThis quilt is a great big WOW!!! I am going to make one. I have 2 solid color strip sets (1 pastel/1 slightly darker) and didn't know what to do with them; now I do. I've ordered 2 strips of black fabric and when it arrives I am going to make my version of this quilt. THANK YOU FOR THE INSPIRATION!!! My projects are allover the palce, not sure what I'll be working on.
ReplyDeleteAnother fantastic quilt. I LOVE black licorice so I think the name of this one is just perfect. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Enjoy the long weekend.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! And yes, I plan my hand sewing (or knitting) for the holidays. With so much sitting and visiting, I need something to keep my hands busy! We're not quite at empty-nest stage, but nearing it, with just two of our nine still at home. Come holidays, the grown ones pour in, but with spouses and grands! Yay! And that means my "sewing room" needs to revert to a bedroom. Working on hand stitching and knitting will be a welcome change.
ReplyDeleteI love the punch of color with all the black squares surrounding.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt will be a real eye-catcher! It already is! ---"Love"
ReplyDeleteLooking good, Amanda Jean! I had a pin-basting session myself, just last evening. Now I get to play with my new sewing machine! I'll probably put "everything" into this quilt - walking foot quilting, free motion quilting, and ruler work! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family!
ReplyDeleteOh my, what a delightful quilt! Yummy licorice and all the other sparkly candies!
ReplyDeleteI am curious about your reason for placing the pins so that they are in both blocks. I have made two quilts where blocks of one color alternate with blocks of multiple colors. My only quilting is two diagonal lines in the one color block. Easy and it frames and emphasizes the multi-color blocks. My pins are in the center of the blocks that will have no quilting. What am I missing?
ReplyDeleteAdorei conhecer seu trabalho. Tudo muito lindo, uma perfeição!
ReplyDeleteI do want to do hand work, but I think knitting is in my future plans as I am knitting socks for the gift shop at the hospital in my new little village. I love this scrappy quilt. It is amazing what black or navy does to colours...I used to think white was might, but as I move through the colours, the dark ones do call.
ReplyDeleteGetting back into blogging has made me so happy. I have been away from reading comments and blogs for too long.
Your quilt is looking lovely. Black on black is so hard on the eyes. I've used a dark purple and a navy blue to quilt on black with good results. I can't help but wonder, though, since it's past Thanksgiving. What's new? lol
ReplyDeleteAmanda, so did you get your lovely Licorice quilt done by Thanksgiving? (an ambitious goal). If you did, that's pretty amazing, w/everything else going on...Thank you for sharing your quilt. We'd love to see it when it's ready for "Show 'n Tell' here on your blog...cheers, Carol (Australia)
