mark twain block update

I've been chugging along on my EPP (English Paper Pieced) Mark Twain blocks. As you may recall, I started this project at the beginning of the year. Here it is, October, (already!) and I'm pleased to report that I've been able to keep up with my goal of making 5 blocks per month. It turns out that is a perfect pace for me, consistently. I have found that having the personal goal keeps me on track, which is a very good thing. You and I both know that there are PLENTY of distractions when it comes to new quilting projects and such. (Isn't that the understatement of the year????)
I took some time today to lay out the blocks and see how the colors are playing together. So far, I'm very pleased!!! Looking at this photo, I see that I need to add a lot more green. The background joining pieces will be red-orange, just like the centers of each block, although I really like how they look on the cream background in this photo. My goal is to make 110 blocks, so if my math is correct, I'm nearly 41% done. Not too bad!

The antique quilt that inspired this project can be seen here.

Happy Monday to you!

  1. This is looking great. I love EPP and always have some on the go, the bit I don't like is finally joining all of the blocks together as it can become rather unwieldy. x

  4. They look wonderful together. Having some go-to hand stitching and a goal is something I am learning is really beneficial for myself as well. This is very inspirational.

  6. Lovely blocks! I sympathize with Kay's comment. I, too, think joining the blocks together is tedious. Making blocks is fun because the creative process involves fabric selection and color choices. As the blocks pile up, you have a very satisfying feeling of accomplishment. I do not get that same feeling as I join the blocks together.

  8. I am on my 3rd EPP hexie quilt. Lovely to just sit and hand sew at times. Question - where did you get the fabric on the top block in the 1st picture? Always on the hunt for 1930's style fabrics.

  9. Having a monthly goal for EPP blocks is a stellar idea. I always seem to get bogged down and do my EPP in fits and starts.

  10. These are beautiful! I like them on the cream, too... all that orange might just be too much, and the blocks will get lost. I'm working on my second GFG quilt; isn't it nice to have a project you can take anywhere?

  11. You could do a green background instead of red and that will solve the lacking of the green.Ha.

  12. That’s going to make a lovely quilt! The white background is very pretty here....makes it look “antique”!

  13. I also think this looks absolutely fantastic on the white background! Your blocks are really beautiful. I love how you used a second fabric to finish off that red one, just like a thrifty quilter of years past would have done.
And wow - 110! I am just finishing my first EPP project which involved far fewer hexie flowers. But, I also think I'm hooked. Having this portable project all summer was so much fun.

  14. Little did I know that there is such a thing as a Mark Twain block. (And I an English teacher! For shame!) I love the mix of colors but with the same red center to give them a nice cohesiveness. At 41% you're in it for the win--too late to give up now. Besides it's such a lovely pattern.
