washi dresses 4 & 5

Welcome to finish it up Friday!

I recently did some garment sewing and I'm happy to report that I finished two more dresses! These are becoming a staple in my wardrobe and I'm very happy about that! (You can see version 1 here, version 2 here and version 3 is at the end of this post.)
The pattern is called the Washi Dress and it's by Made by Rae. I can't recommend it enough! I'm very lucky to be able to sew up a size medium with no adjustments whatsoever, and it fits me perfectly. I realize that's rare...thus multiple dresses with the same pattern!
The dresses are versatile. I wear them to church, out shopping and when I teach and speak. They are comfortable and can be dressed up or down. I love that!

The fabric for dress #4 is Chambray Union Indigo by Robert Kaufman, which I purchased here. It's really lovely for a garment!
The orangey red fabric for dress #5 was picked out by my friend Brianne. (It's pretty great to have a personal shopper! Haha!) The print is called petal from the line Vignette, designed by Aneela Hoey for Cloud 9 Fabrics. It was purchased at SR Harris.
The fabric is double gauze, which means that this dress is dreamy!!! I was worried about it getting super wrinkly after wearing it, but I had no problem. Yay! It's a fun dress for warmer fall days.

I think my favorite part of constructing the dress is sewing the shirring on the back, which is made by sewing with elastic thread. I was so afraid of doing that part the first time, but it's like magic, I tell you. It's so satisfying.
I purchased the geranium dress (similar pattern, but for girls) for my daughter last spring, but I haven't made her one yet. I think that's next on the garment sewing list! She's excited about it and I am, too.

Do you sew garments at all? If so, what are some of your go-to patterns? I'd love to hear about it in the comments!

Now it's your turn! Please link up your finishes for the week. Thanks for joining me for finish it up Friday!

  5. The dresses are gorgeous, Amanda! I've made a couple of garments, but I'm most definitely still a beginner. I'd love to make more. I've been eyeing the washi dress pattern for a while and I may have to give it a try.

  7. The dresses look very cute and comfortable. How lovely that they fit so well. I used to do a lot of my own clothing construction but don't anymore. Maybe someday I'll start again.

  9. I love the one in double gauze! Did you just buy the instant download? And is the scoop neckline part of the original pattern? I just see the keyhole looking neck on the website to buy the pattern (made by Rae).

  10. Rae's Geranium Dress is my default dress for my daughter's. I honestly have no idea how many I've made now. I recently recommended it as a first pattern for a neighbor learning to sew, and she made two gorgeous dresses right out of the gate with very few questions for me. You're going to love it.

My default for myself is a wrap skirt pattern from Heather Ross, but my current favorite is Rae's Gemma tank. The two I've made - and even my wearable muslin that's a little too tight - get lots of wear. I've already bought fabric for another.

  13. I have 2 patterns that I've made over and over. One is a dress shirt for my husband the pattern of which I made from a shirt he liked. I've made 6 or 7 of them. They all have mandarin collars that he prefers.
The second is the Scout Tee from Grainline Studio. I have added many variation (woven and knit, button front, v-neck and 2 different types of side vents). Think I've sewn 13 of these shirts!
Have been eyeing double gauze but have not purchased any fabric yet.

    Your dresses are lovely!

  15. Love Rae's patterns. I have made at least 6 or 7 Geranium dresses for my granddaughter as she grows. And she's not even 2 yet! I love that pattern and recently bought the expansion pack to add sleeves for the fall and winter. I have made 9 blouses from Rae's patterns Gemma and Beatrix. She writes a great pattern. I have also had success with Oliver + S patterns for my grandsons.

  16. Fantastic! It's so rewarding to make clothes that you love and can enjoy and these versions are just gorgeous, Amanda Jean. I'm like you, once I find a pattern that fits me, I like to make multiple versions. Enjoy your pretty new dresses! Happy weekend!

  17. Your dresses are adorable! They look so comfy. I don't sew garments anymore, but I used to! And I remember that one certain pattern that fit to a tee with no adjustments. I made several, like you! Your daughter's will be just as cute. Don't forget to share a pic when it gets made. Have a wonderful weekend!

  18. Love your dresses. I'm going to have to look for this pattern! It looks like something comfortable, which I love! Isn't it wonderful to find a pattern that is easily made, fits well, and looks good? I mean, that's what the patterns are like in heaven, surely. You've chosen some gorgeous fabrics that can really go just about anywhere. Kick in a little black one, add heels and you're ready for a dinner date at a nice restaurant!

  19. I used to sew garments often. Not so much now. Probably the last thing I made was an apron, a superhero outfit for each of my 2 great grandsons and some pajama pants for me. Not too exciting. I love your dresses, all five of them!

  20. Love all the dresses and especially the three rows of elastic in the back, makes a very flattering waist. Do you have to iron them ?

  21. Both dresses are lovely! So natural and comfortable - I'm a huge fan of Rae's designs too - although I haven't wandered into the Washi yet I love her blouse patterns so I'm sure I'd love this dress pattern too. Her drafting is so precise and your sewing is too!

  22. I just love that red washi dress! It looks totally comfortable. I generally shy away from dresses with a higher waistline, for fear that it makes me look pregnant. Well, at age 64, at least THAT isn't going to happen! Ha! I've sewn garments for years, and still like to make the occasional top or dress for myself. My favorite summer-time top pattern is Tortola, by Sis Boom. It's made with cotton fabric on the bias, so it has a lovely drape. Yes, you do have to buy a bit more fabric to achieve that, but it's a great way to enjoy your favorite quilting cotton print.

  23. Well done! Your personal shopper did a great job of picking out that fabric! And, as always, thanks for hosting!

  26. I do sew clothes, as well as quilts! Two patterns I really love are the Everyday Skirt (from Liesl & Co - you can find the pattern on the Oliver + S site) and the Archer button-up from Grainline Studio. Great results each time with those patterns!
For kids, I've had the best luck with the Olive + S patterns.
