I sewed this project during the summer, so it's actually been done for a couple of months, but I'm eager to share it with you today. The pattern is called the Range Backpack by the amazingly talented Anna of Noodlehead. (The PDF pattern is available for purchase here.) Of all of the things that I've made, this is probably the project at the top of the list that makes me want to exclaim, "I actually made this!!!!" Hahaha!
The pattern calls for waxed canvas, which I ordered from AL Frances on Etsy. I used spring green and a blue denim for the exterior of my bag. I got the hardware kit from Anna. (It's SO handy that she stocks them...saves a lot of time and trouble trying to track everything down.) I had never used waxed canvas before, so I was quite nervous to sew with it, but it went well! It's fun to expand one's sewing horizons. Also, it's nice to have some hand holding and direction while doing it. Ha! The hardest part of the whole project for me was when it came time to turn the bag right side out. I didn't want to crumple the canvas....even though that's the whole point. The canvas gets better with age and with use. Breaking it in will be a challenge for me, I'm certain!
As for the actual construction, I did that at a retreat with a few of my friends. 6 of us made our own version of the backpack, each one reflecting their own taste and style. It was super fun to do the project together AND to get a group photo of all of our backpacks.
I LOVE Anna's patterns because they produce such professional looking finished products. Every single time!! As soon as my kids saw it, each one of asked me if I would make them one. That's a good sign of success, I would say! I loved making it....and I felt a great sense of accomplishment when I finished. SO thankful to have been a part of the backpack party that we had at retreat.
Switching gears a little bit....my oldest boy turned 17 yesterday! I'm having a hard time processing exactly how that happened. He requested carrot cake for his birthday, which I was happy to make for him. Having leftover cake for breakfast is a good way to start a Friday! I picked this book up from the library a few weeks ago and I've tried 8 recipes from it so far (including the carrot cake recipe)... there is not a dud in the bunch! I can't recommend it enough!
I thought it would be fun to do a little giveaway today! It's been awhile! If you would like to win a PDF copy of Anna's pattern for the Range Backpack, I will pick one lucky winner from the commenters today. I'd like to thank each and every one of you for stopping by my blog and reading. It really, truly means so much!
Now it's your turn! Please link up your finishes for the week. Thank you, as always, for joining me for finish it up Friday!
What a gorgeous bag - and every single one of them looks professionally finished - a sign of a good pattern as well as talented sewers! Just please say that you did all go for a walk wearing matching but not matching backpacks?!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that backpack! Going to have to make my own now.
ReplyDeleteThat bag is so awesome Amanda!!!! What a fantastic finish and I bet you are so excited to say you made it ;) Bags still scare me, but how awesome that you tackled this. It just looks wonderful and inspires me to break out of my 2-D quilt sewing and try some 3-D bags!!! Oh, and carrot cake for breakfast, yummy, now I am totally craving a piece ;)
ReplyDeleteLove the backpack....love all the backpacks. Talented ladies all.
ReplyDeleteThat is SO impressive! I have yet to try to sew anything three-dimensional!
ReplyDeleteIt is so good to have your back!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute bag! And how fun to have a shared retreat project. Happy birthday to your boy! It just goes faster from here, I'm sorry to tell you.
ReplyDeleteThe backpacks turned out great! And a lot of my favorite recipes have come directly from food brands, so I don't doubt that the recipes in that cookbook are tasty.
ReplyDeleteWin Win When the kids ask for one!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMaybe mine will also!
Hi Amanda,
ReplyDeleteWow - that is a fabulous backpack. I can see why all your kiddos wanted you to make them one, too. I would love to win the pattern, and I thank you for the chance! ~smile~ Roseanne
I love the backback. It is really awesome
ReplyDeleteThe backpacks look wonderful! I would love to make one ( or more), thanks for the opportunity to win a pattern. I really enjoy your blog.
ReplyDeleteI've been seeing this bag around Blogland and I love your version; I am very partial to apple green and the denim blue is perfect. I have some washed Kraftex which feels and looks like suede in Apple Green and think I could use it for a bag. I just have to find the patience to make something like this.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job on that backpack! And it's good to have you back blogging, too. I hope you really enjoyed your month off.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I scanned this post before reading the details. When I saw the picture of multiple backpacks, I thought you had made them all and I was in awe. Now that I know you made the green one, I am still in awe but not worried that you had gone over the edge making all of them!! The pattern looks amazing and your finish looks so professional.
ReplyDeleteAs for King Arthur, I am a huge fan of their flours. Also, their website is amazing and has so many great recipes. Good choice on your son's part - I love carrot cake.
Have a great weekend Amanda!
Amanda!
ReplyDeleteYou make the best projects! Thanks for sharing your Range Backpack with us and for the awesome giveaway - you rock!

Recently, I made the Maker's Tote. Yes, you are right, the Noodlehead pattern is well written.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE KAF recipies. I read their blog/website and I've never had a dud recipe. I also love their toll free hotline in case you need some help or clarification.
ReplyDeleteYour backpack looks great. I used waxed cotton for a lunch bag for my husband years ago and I loved how it smelled like a new box of crayons.
I've always been intimidated about sewing bags. Maybe this could change my mind.
ReplyDeleteLove the backpack! So fun to do it at a retreat. And the colors are great. I wonder how it would work up in leather. Would love to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteYour finished bag is awesome. Definitely one I would like to make myself. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYour bag looks great! Thanks for this opportunity :) Blessings!
ReplyDeleteI haven't used a backpack in YEARS but I want to make THIS one, so I'd be thrilled to win a pattern!

ReplyDelete3D sewing is always worth a medal! Your backpack looks great!
ReplyDeleteLove seeing the row of backpacks! Since we Canadians seem to be known for our backpacks on travels, I'd love to make one as sweet as these. :-)
ReplyDeleteThe bags look lovely. It's good to try something different sometimes. How great that all your children want one, the seal of approval. I love the recipes from King Arthur. I gave my daughter one of their baking books when she got married.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you are back from your blogging break. I missed you. Every Friday, my usual MO is to log on and start to read all the linked "Finishes". That may be why my own personal finishes are far and few between. Truth be known, I'll have some soon. Love your backpack, Spring Green and denim - perfect, but....looks a bit intimidating.
ReplyDeleteLove your bag! (And I always want cookbook recommendations.)
ReplyDeleteYour version of the backpack looks great! Would love to give this pattern a try. Thank you ...
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful bag! Gorgeous! Thanks for the opportunity! ecboeringa@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteReally great to see all the fabrics used for the backpack! I may have to put this on my "to do" list!
ReplyDeleteA real cute backpack, all 6 in a row!!!
ReplyDeleteAlways love carrot cake, it's a winner!

Super cute backpack! I picked up that cookbook at Costco a couple of years ago - the chocolate "breakfast muffins" are amazing.
ReplyDeleteI've never made a backpack or worked with waxed canvas but this cute pattern makes me want to try! Really enjoy reading your posts.
ReplyDeleteI made a Cargo Duffle back in July---another Noodlehead pattern. I have used it as a knitting bag for a HUGE project and as an overnight bag. I love Anna's patterns because they are well-written and easy to follow, yet the finished bags look so professional and store-bought. (I mean that in a good way!)
ReplyDeleteI just have to tell you I am glad you're back! All is right with the world! Haha. And I wouldn't mind winning the pattern. I just mostly wanted to say glad you're back!

ReplyDeleteLove the backpack and the group photo shows them off to perfection.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great pattern - and even better to get a request for one from a family member This sounds like a win-win pattern for sure!
ReplyDeleteLove the backpack. The waxed fabric looks great and I really like the spring green color. The bag does look a little intimidating to make, at least to me.
ReplyDeleteLoved this bag from the moment I saw it. I have three grandkids who would each like one I'm sure. Thanks for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteLinda
What a cute backpack pattern! I want to make one!!!
ReplyDeleteI know my grandkids would LOVE one of these backpacks, and suspect my kids probably would, too. Yours is SO professionally done, it makes me think maybe I could make one with great success, too. Thanks for the giveaway! Deb E / Oregon mdenders@msn.com
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely line up of finished bags! And such a nice variety. Sounds like it would have been fun to make as a group. This looks like a very versatile backpack! I have only made one bag myself and I can relate to the hand holding comment. Anything to lessen the tension!
ReplyDeleteI loved that backpack from the moment I saw the first pictures. It manages to be both casual and kind of sophisticated at the same time. I need to work up the courage to try one, especially since every report says it was not that hard. Love your color choices. (Not only is that cookbook a winner, so is their "Cookie Companion".)
ReplyDeletebolderbaker.at.gmail.dot.com

ReplyDeleteLove your backpack! You are such an inspiration. I love to bake as well and have never missed with a recipe from the King Arthur Flour website.
ReplyDeleteThis bag is so cool!
ReplyDeleteLove the bag. Will have to try working with the waxed canvas. The only finish today was emptying my wallet at the Madison Quilt Expo

ReplyDeleteGlad to have you back in the blog world. Looking forward to your tutorial on the knitted pin cushion. Have enjoyed reading your new book, and one of these days will actually make a pattern from it.
ReplyDeleteSally Mortenson
Yes! Your bag is wonderful and so is the group shot. I do love seeing a whole lineup of finishes when everyone puts her spin on a project. Now I'm off to look at Anna's site. I have heard nothing but rave reviews of her patterns. If you don't hear from me for a while, it's because I've fallen down Anna's rabbit hole. :) Send me a lifeline...
ReplyDeleteI love this backpack since the day she debuted it! I would love to win the pattern. I am planning to buy it regardless but winning would be awesome! I already bought my fabric for it! Thanks for the giveaway.

ReplyDeleteLOVE this bag! I think my kids would too. They've all 3 been using the same backpacks for about 4 years (we homeschool so they're usually only used about once a week for co-op) and never complained. I know they'd love to choose their own patterns and have new ones though I'm sure. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'd love a chance to try this great backpack! Thanks

ReplyDeleteA member of my quilt group just made one of these with a leather bottom! Love it!

ReplyDeleteI love this backpack!
ReplyDeleteI love your backpack and would enjoy making one.
ReplyDeleteWow those turned out awesome! I so enjoy your blog AND YOUR BOOKS! Great stuff! Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteI've never been interested in making or carrying a backpack, but this one is perfect! I tend to put too much stuff in my handbag that hangs on my shoulder, which causes pain. This should alleviate that!
ReplyDeleteYour bag is phenomenal!! I love Anna's projects but am a little intimidated by them-- your post makes me want to try!! Great idea to share the experience at a retreat.
ReplyDeleteI am really glad that you are back. That is a great looking bag! Love the chance at winning so that I can make it.
ReplyDeleteFirst, the backpack is awesome, and it reminds me the importance of trying something new. When I was a teenager I made my dad a down vest, and I had that same "actually made" feeling. He wore that vest a ton, and it made me feel special. I had that about that vest for a long time until I read your entry. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteSecond, who doesn't love carrot cake for birthdays and breakfast. Yes please!
That back pack is perfect. I love that the top is square rather than round with a zipper. This way, it is very useful for carrying tablets or pads of paper for outdoor painting and sketching. Bags of all sorts have become my favorite projects. Well done, thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove your backpack! What a great idea to make them as a group, and I love the group photo!
ReplyDeleteYour backpack is *beautiful!*
ReplyDeletePerfect choices!... Love that green!
Amanda Jean, I am very curious about the waxed fabric... (Love the look!)... Are there any particular tips or cautions you can give to someone new to this?? Did you encounter any issues with wax and your sewing machine???
It's amazing, isn't it, how fast our babies grow up?!! It seems like only a "little while ago" my youngest son was born... then 17... and tomorrow he will be 34!!!!!
:-D
*Happy Birthday!* to your son!!!
Pat T.
I.too, love Anna's patterns. She does a great job with instructions and accompanying pictures. Love this bag, thanks for showcasing.
ReplyDeleteDebbie Faber
What a fabulous pack! And I completely agree about Noodlehead patterns--they are so professionally designed and the finished projects make you proud. Very nice job!
ReplyDeletePlease don't enter me in the giveaway, but I do want to say that your backpack DOES look very professional! All of them do. I think that making those backpacks in a group of friends must have been lots of fun. Also, thanks for the recipe book tip. I've been getting more and more into bread-baking, and King Arthur brand comes up a lot. Apparently they make some sort of basket for raising bread that helps it keep it's shape for baking. I'll be looking for the book too! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove your colors on the backpack. I need to get me some waxed canvas, I love the look of it.
ReplyDeleteLooks Great!! enjoy the bag
ReplyDeleteThat bag is great and so classic looking.....perfect for carrying a new King Arthur Baking Book!

ReplyDeleteGreat pack! I love seeing the line up of the six of them. Must have been a fun weekend.
ReplyDeleteYour backpack looks amazing. I'm always hesitant to make bags (except tote bags) because I'm afraid that mine will look homemade but not in a good way. I'm glad you said that Noodlehead patterns always seem to come out with professional looking results. Gives me confidence to try.
ReplyDeletehijoffeATgmailDOTcom
LOVE the backpack! The colors are wonderful. I will have to check out the fabric you used too. I too, find going outside the quilting lines to be hard at times, but I did make a Sew Together bag and was very proud of myself!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a PDF lover, but I love a Noodlehead project! (The Divided Basket specifically.) This bag looks like a keeper as well!

We have a store bought one of course, but its not nearly as cool as if I made it. Thanks for sharing. Love reading your blog.
