Today my friend Amy, of Diary of a Quilter, is sharing her beautiful take on the subtle quilt. Amy and I have been long time blog friends and we've even been quilt market roommates a time or two. I had to chuckle when she picked the subtle quilt, because it seemed like it would be right up her alley. It's fun to see the quilt sewn up in a different color way, too! She's giving away a copy of the book, so be sure to visit her here.
There's so much I could say about this quilt, I don't even know where to start. It's definitely a favorite! In a lot of ways this quilt reminds me of my grandmother. She was a simple, hard-working lady who loved the color red. She was definitely a make-do-and-mend kind of woman. This quilt is an homage to her.
This quilt started out with the idea of making a scrappy Irish chain quilt, but completely scrappy, not focusing on just one color for the chain. This is really embarrassing, but this was the start....
It was a very rocky start, I might add, but I liked the idea too much to let it go. In the book, I shared the process of how I got from the photo, above, to the finished quilt, below. I thought it was important to include a section in the book about what to do when things AREN'T working. (Because I know that that's my reality a lot of times. ha!) Sometimes it's quite a process to get from the initial idea to the finished quilt.... but it's always worth it!
I used up a LOT of scraps for this quilt. Especially my low volume stash. I love that there is so much variety in the patchwork. One could look at it for hours. All of the chain blocks are red and white polka dots. A classic and a favorite. I have a feeling that this quilt will age very well.
Steffani did the beautiful quilting on this one, as well. I chose a simple daisy pattern, which finishes it off quite nicely.
This quilt is a generous twin size...66" x 90", but it would be easy to adapt to almost any size.
Today, I'm going to do a giveaway as well! I'm going to be giving away two copies of my new book! One winner, within the US, will receive a hard copy of No Scrap Left Behind. One winner, outside the US, will win a digital copy of the book. If you'd like to win, please leave me a comment in this post. In your comment, I'd love to hear what your favorite color (or combination) is at the moment. Be sure to include whether you are in the US or not, as well as your email address, so I can contact you in case you win. Thank you SO MUCH for celebrating my book release with me. I sure appreciate it!
edited to add: the giveaway is now closed. thanks to all who entered!
Ok, now it's time to link up your finishes for the week! Thanks for joining me for finish it up Friday!
It has to be blue and gold for me - I can accept an extra colour or two into the mix but sky and sunshine is where my heart lies!!
ReplyDeleteI seem to be in a turquoise mood. After quilting for 8 years I made a quilt for ME:) With all the scraps I made a wall quilt for my quilting room. I would love a copy of your book. Dlee822@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI love red and white quilts. The polka dots are perfect. Thanks for this great blog tour to celebrate your book. I just finished my third vortex quilt and have another one started with leftovers from this one...sort of like a sourdough starter....I feed it and it eventually gets made into something.
ReplyDeleteForgot to tell you my favourite colour is orange
ReplyDeleteI like bright colors and especially magenta.
ReplyDeleteRight now I'm playing with ideas for a rainbow quilt so I can use ALL my scraps...daunting, but I'm excited!
ReplyDeleteI am loving orange right now! I think its an underappreciated color.
ReplyDeleteI've been in a purple or lime green mood for color lately, not necessarily together. Love the red and neutral quilt! And her blue and neutral version was pretty too!
ReplyDeleteI'm in the US - aprilspolnicki{AT}gmail{DOT}com
I really like this quilt. There's something very satisfying about simply piecing together squares of the same size. Right now, bright happy colors and combinations are keeping my spirits up. We're in Idaho.
ReplyDeleteI love blue! It is my safe place! I am in the USA, thanks for the chance to win a copy of your book.
ReplyDeleteI am still stuck on red and Aqua. I used that basic scheme to decorate our beach house and haven't wavered yet!
ReplyDeleteI am loving turquoise in anything. I have always liked it but in recent years, It has grown into a mania. Even if I don't win a copy, I will buy one. I love this red quilt too much to let it get away. Imagine it in turquoise...
ReplyDeletei fell in love with the color combo of a stack of tshirts while i was doing laundry recently, and i totally want to use the same colors in the a quilt: brown, grey, teal, and purple.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color in a quilt in aqua. It goes so well with red, gray, yellow, pink, navy, green. I am in Alabama and would love to win a copy of your book!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color is purple (I know, go ahead and laugh). But recently I've been absolutely in love with a rainbow of solids. I almost exclusively have print fabric, but now I'm itching to make a solids quilt - with every color!
ReplyDeleteI'm in the US, and my favorite color these days is grey paired with any other color - especially orange. I'm mulling over a quilt in those two colors right now!
ReplyDeleteI have to force myself to work with anything other than blue/green.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to make a red & white quilt. I love yours. My favorite color is green. Oh, and I live in US.

ReplyDeleteLove this scrappy quilt! Find myself working with a lot of dark blues (from navy to teal) and corally oranges these days.

ReplyDeleteI like your use of red and white, so clean and crisp looking.
I hope to link up in the morning, putting a binding on a baby quilt tonight.
This quilt is wonderful. All quilts in the book looks great.I have no favorite colour but in my stash is a lot of blue. I am from Uruguay. pennywehner@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteAqua and coral are my colors of the moment. Must be feeling very tropical 🌴 waiting for warmer temps in Michigan. Would love to win a copy of your book.
ReplyDeleteI am a blue girl. When I clean up my scraps, I can't believe how many quilts I have made that include blue. Therefore I have made several blue scrap quilts. It is a wondeful vicious cycle. I have just finished a scrap quilt that my grandmother started with me. She rounded up the funniest collection of scraps - some of my childhood dress scraps, her apron scraps, old curtains, curtain linings, you name it. Anyways I have been quilting about 30 years and promised on her deathbed (in 1994) that I would finish it. True to my word, I put the binding on it today. I thought of her with every hand stitch that I put into it, it is English Paper Piecing, and I am thrilled to honour her with this sentimental and cute (but not the prettiest) twin bed quilt. I love that quilting brings our grandmothers to mind. Now that I am a grandmother, I am thrilled that my grandchildren love quilts and enjoy many at home and at Grandma's. Janice.snell@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteOne of my favourite combinations is turquoise and cream. I thoroughly enjoyed "Sunday Morning Quilts" and refer to it often. Looking forward to using your new book. I live in Vancouver, Canada. elizabethruth18ATgmailDOTcom
ReplyDeleteI'm here in the US. My favorite color is blue, any shade!
ReplyDeleteHello Amanda,
ReplyDeleteI am from Germany and I lOVE green. This is also the reason for starting the quilting. At last I could do a lot with all those hundred of thousand greens!!! I am working on my 3rd green quilt within a year.
And I love your book. I have the Sunday Morning Book and love all those inspirations AND that I must not throw away a bit of my precious fabrics (which are the double of the price as in USA!).
Love your fable for polka dots, and that there are so many different. I used to have a shirt in red which I loved as a teenager!
Greetings and thank you so much for that blog hop.
Christiane
My favorite color combo right now is purple and grey. I'd love to win a copy of your book!! stucker1261ATgmailDOTcom. Thanks!!!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite colour is green - especially lime green. In my books, green is neutral and goes with everything - just look at nature. I am in Canada (hence the use of "u" in colour. 😀)

ReplyDeleteI would love to make a pink and brown quilt and have been collecting fabrics for this purpose. They are all very beautiful and inspiring and I would really love to win a copy of your awesome book! I want to make so many of the quilts. I am from Massachusetts. Thanks Amanda.
ReplyDeleteLoved seeing this quilt. On my "to make" list is a red and white double Irish chain. Now I think incorporating low volume into that may be the way to go. I think I've been channeling my 5 year old princess lately because I'm all about the pink. Okay not bubblegum pink more like faded rose. but still. pink.
ReplyDelete(I'm in the US - forgot that in the first post)
Congratulations on your book's release. I love the subtle quilt! I love color and I think my favorite today is mango - a red orange. I am in the US. My email is randjmass AT yahoo DOT com ~Jeanne

ReplyDeletered and white, on my list to make. great scrap patterns
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt!! Gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteI would like to try something in grey and teal. I'm in the UK
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color combination is now, and has always been blue and white. It's a good choice for either summer or winter quilts, as well as clothing for me and/or my great-grand-children. Here in California it fits the bill.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy your blog and all the fantastic work you share with us.
I love green, but love all bright color combinations. I've never made a two color quilt. I think I have to include scrappy as my favorite combination.
ReplyDeleteI am working on an Aqua/Turquoise, mustard and coral quilt so I am into those colors right now. Love your new book! I bought Sunday Morning a few years ago when I decided I wanted to try a more modern approach to quilting and it really got me out of my rut. Thanks for all the inspiration and your authentic, unique style!
ReplyDeleteI love pink and aqua right now, and I can't wait to make a few quilts in this colorway.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color to work with is turquoise. It goes with everything I'm working on at the moment! Thanks for the opportunity to win your book. I am a big fan of you and your blog.

ReplyDeleteMy current favorite color combo is turquoise and grey. I'm loving all your quilts and this one is fantastic, too! :)
ReplyDeleteI've never been able to limit myself to just a color or two, and I often go for unusual combinations: red, orange and pink; purple, lime and egg yellow; orange and purple with a variable accent color. And rainbow is always a happy choice. Guess that's why I love scrappy, whether random or controlled. And why I need a copy of your book! I'm in the U.S., susanprincess at att dot net
ReplyDeleteI love two color scrappy quilts, especially red and white quilts and blue and white quilts. I'm in the US.
ReplyDeleteOrange and white. Sounds like a dreamsicle, but it just looks crisp and cheerful to me! I love this quilt idea--need to get the book and make one. Thanks especially for sharing your "before" picture. It was a good reality check for me. I appreciate your steady inspiration into my inbox! Have a great weekend--and congrats on the book!
ReplyDeleteI don't actually have a favorite color combination, and I don't really have any colors that I don't like to use ~ but I guess I don't use purples and browns as much as other colors. I very much like where this quilt ended up. I look forward to reading about your process after you pick me as the winner of the book :-)
ReplyDeleteHappy Quilting and congrats on the new book ~ Tracy

ReplyDeleteRed is my favorite color. I have found I am drawn to red and white quilts.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the US.

Love this quilt! Red is a close second favorite color of mine, following green. The dotty chain is charming but unexpected and works well. My grandma quilted some and had treasured handmade quilts constructed with her sisters on her guest bed. I miss her so much! Congrats on getting so many scrappy ideas out of your head and made real! I would love to win a copy of your book.
ReplyDeleteForgot to say I'm in the US! And my latest color combo in a quilt is blue and rusty orange 🍊
ReplyDeleteI love your quilt especially the red. My color right now is green - can't get enough of it. I live in US.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from sunny Florida! I love the Subtle Quilt. I was just sorting my low volume fabrics I have been collecting for awhile knowing I wanted to do something with them but needed a project with something that was in someway visually familiar and consistent. The subtle quilt strikes that chord for me! Thank you for sharing your quilts on teh blog tour.
ReplyDeleteLOL I have two current favorites -- Purple and gray AND teal and gray. USA
ReplyDeleteI don't really have a favorite color combo. After just having finished a red, white and green top I am currently working on an all blues quilt. One of my favorite quilts though is a red and white one. And yours is more than special!
ReplyDeleteI love red and white so this quilt of yours really spoke to me! It's on my bucket list to do!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color is purple... specifically dark purples like eggplant. Together I really like purple and greens... like chartruse. I really like the subtle quilt. The low volume scrappy background is so appealing to me! It has such a vintage vibe.
ReplyDeleteRight now I seem to be using my blues and greens. With a scrappy emphasis.
ReplyDeleteRed and green, not the typical Christmas version, but other shades and tints and subtleties, with low volume scrappy backgrounds.
ReplyDeleteI am in the US.
Congratulations on your book.
I love turquoise and at the moment I want to combine it with a bright cobalt blue or purple. Love the red and low volume colours

ReplyDeleteMelmess09 (AT)Gmail (dot) com.
My favorite color is green -- love shades of green -- especially yellow greens-- paired with oranges, or with teals and yellows.
ReplyDeleteReally like the red polka dots too, though.
Love your site and am in the US.
Definitely red and white quilts top my favourite colour combo and made two R&W quilts, but one is more red and tan/cream, as my taste are the murky tones, rather than clear. I love a Irish Chain pattern, but only done it in scrap blue and white, I was planning a scrappy coloured one, like the "fail" you just showed. So disappointed to see that it didnt flow well, I will have to give that some thought as I have already cut a lot of my scraps up to use in that pattern! Congratulations on the publishing of your new book, hope it is a success.
ReplyDeleteThe red reminds me of my grandmother also! (her kitchen was red and white) I will have to build a stash of reds, but this is definitely on my to do list.
ReplyDeleteI am loving low volume and greys with brights at the moment. The scrapper the better! Just what
ReplyDeleteam I going to do with all those reproductions I have collected. From Canada's north country.

This quilt is so lovely! I love how it turned out. It is really interesting to see the overall effect and then the close ups to see the details of the scraps used. I love the combination of blue and light gray at the moment. But I also like a monochromatic approach with pinks and reds together. It is my favorite monochromatic scheme. I'm in the US! Thanks and congrats on the book.
ReplyDeletePurple and green have been my favorite combination for quite some time. Finished a string quilt from my scrap bin today that includes many jewel tone colors, but tilts heavily toward my two favorite colors!
ReplyDeletecoral and pink, girly girl colors for me! (I am in the US)
ReplyDeleteI love blue, always. I'm in the U.S.

ReplyDeleteRight now I'm loving blue and white with a hit of orange. But your red and white is making me swoon!
ReplyDeleteI just adore that quilt! How inspiring! I especially appreciate the fact that you showed us the "before" picture of when you weren't thrilled with it. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has to see and tweak things first!
ReplyDeleteI really love reds and aquas together. Those were our wedding colors from almost a decade ago, so I suppose I'm just partial and keep reverting back to them. :)

ReplyDeleteI like that you asked "at the moment" :) Blue and Yellow - at this moment! ;) I'm in the US.
ReplyDeleteAn Irish Chain was my very first quilt. Maybe it's time to revisit that. I am never about one favoritest color. At the very least, it's a range of a color, does that make me indecisive or visionary? Ha! Right now I'm all about the turquoise, teal, aqua, blue-green, green-blue and anything else in the box/shop that is near those.
ReplyDelete(bolderbaker.at.gmail.dot.com)
the blog hop has been lots of fun and I love all your quilts, congratulations on a great book! Lately I've been making quilts with lots of solid colors so I can't say I have a favorite color at the moment. I'm in the US.
ReplyDeleteBlack and white (or vanilla) is an all time classic for me as my clothes will attest to. I do love colors in general the more saturated (like the jewel tones), the more they pull me in. I have immensely enjoyed this blog hop. I'm a scrappy lover to the grain.
ReplyDeletetushay3 (at) yahoo (dot) com

ReplyDelete(USA) I'm really a rainbow girl at heart but do have streaks where a color or range of colors stand out to catch my interest. At present it's ocean colors - blue, aqua, teal, purple (think Kate Spain's Horizon collection) - peaceful, calm, refreshing. Your book is amazing!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love this Irish chain. I have been collecting vintage sheets to try something similar, with a low volume scrappy background and then solids for the chain. I am haunting thrift shops and garage sales this summer to try to collect what I need to make it this winter! Would love to win the book. I'm in Montana, USA
ReplyDeleteI've been gradually gravitating toward the beautiful cooling blue/green aquas lately. I guess I just need to make a quilt using that color predominately - and totally scrappy of course, the more aquas the better! Why use a few when you can use 50! I'm in Texas.
ReplyDeleteI would say that my favorite has always been a blue or teal, but that red quilt is REALLY calling to me.
ReplyDeleteThank you for a wonderful 2 weeks of smiles and wows at your book tour blog. I hope I win one and if not, I'll be on my way to my LQS. Thanks for all you do for the quilting community.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard for me to choose a favorite color or color combination. I like them all. But a blue and white quilt always makes me happy. (I'm in the U.S.)
ReplyDeleteI love this blog tour and have loved seeing so many variations - can't wait to buy this book. My favorite color combination is blue and anything -blue and brown, blue and green, blue and red. I love blue!
ReplyDeleteLately, I'm liking the colors in succulents.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your book.
ReplyDeleteI love yellow and I'm in the USA.

I've really been smitten by the black/white with a pop of one other color quilts. That color for me is yellow. kthurn@bektel.com
ReplyDeleteBlue and yellow always are a winner for me! I'm in the US - momboat5@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteI'd like to make this in pink. I have enough pink scraps to make several. I live in the US and can be reached at theprudens@aol.com
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the book and thanks for the chance.
I love your red and whitish quilt but have an itch to make a blue and white quilt!
ReplyDeleteLove scrap quilts and I seem to keep making scraps so I'd love to win a copy of your book please!
I've always liked Irish Chain quilts, but how much more interesting is this scrappy version, lovely! I don't have a favourite colour combination at the moment, but whenever I see a red and white quilt I think I should make one. It's timeless.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Cape Breton! I didn't finish anything this week :(, but I'll have fun strolling through your linkys to see who did! Love this quilt. Has that very old fashioned, utilitarian look that appeals to me, I'm collecting red scraps, but hadn't thought of an Irish chain. Hmmm. Enjoy your day! The hop has been fun! Congratulations on your book. It looks just delightful. XO
ReplyDeleteMy favourite colour is purple, any shade of purple. Haven't made any quilts in this colour but have lots of fabric to do so. Loving the impact of your Subtle quilt, Amy's version, too. Would be amazing made with purple as the stand out colour!

I would so love to win your book here in Kansas City! You have a big fan here. I've been making scrappy 9 patches, so will see how that goes compared to yours and Amy's. Love them both. Right now, my favorite color is grass green. Thanks for a chance to win your book, and congratulations on that! Barb at btts90@aol.com.
ReplyDeleteToday my colors are blue and orange.
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed the tour so much, thanks! Favorite combo right now is pink, orange, plum, greeny-gold. Pastel colors of autumn.

I love this quilt as all of the others! Red and white is a favorite combo but I also love blue and white and have never made one of those. Thank you for sharing the picture that didn't work!! It is good to see that others do things like that too!
ReplyDeleteI'm in GA.
Purple is my favourite colour. Thank you for the tour of your book, it's been so interesting!
ReplyDeleteThe finished scrappy quilt has symmetry which is pleasing to the eye in my humble opinion. Coincidentally, I am gathering red and white fabrics to make a scrappy quilt.
ReplyDeleteI love that it's not just red squares, it's red with white polka dots! So fun. My favorite color at the moment is aqua/teal - I must be longing for summertime! Congrats on the book and thank you for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteOh, I've been dreaming of a red and white quilt for a while now! I haven't got beyond the effervescent dream-planning stage because I've been making baby quilts (the last one was blues and turquoises with a reverse of big whites and oranges) or quilts for the beds in other people's houses. You have, as is so often the case, inspired me over here in Connecticut.
ReplyDeleteStunning quilt! I gravitate towards aquas and teals in my sewing but green is my favourite colour followed by navy then red! Canada.
ReplyDeleteIts a lovely quilt and a an inpiration to me . I have been thinking on making a red quilt for my bedroom. And this is a great opportunity to follow your pattern. Thank you for sharing .
ReplyDeleteI am finding myself drawn to purple these days! The purple stash is building, the purple shirts are piling higher in my wardrobe! :-) Peggy in the US
ReplyDeleteLove looking at all your beautiful creations and would love to have your book. Red was always my mother's favorite color and your story about your grandmother made me think of her. Thanks for all the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteRight now, purples and grays are on my cutting table. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful quilt! I love scrappy quilts! I can't get enough yellow right now! Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt so very much! I want to make an Irish Chain quilt, and using low volume scrappiness for the background really makes it so interesting and fun! I love so many quilts in your new book, and this one of my favorites. I admit it, I have claimed that several quilts in this book are my FAVORITE as you've posted about the book each day! Right now, I'm loving navy, and mixing it with pink or orange or peach seems to be my current combinations. I'm clearly a multi-favorite kind of quilter! Congratulations on your beautiful second book!

Wow, I just love this quilt! Really great color combo and the red dot fabric is perfect. It is eye catching and yet soft.
ReplyDeleteI am always a big fan of blue and it is what I have the most of in my stash. Whenever I shop for fabric, I have to try to talk myself out of buying MORE blue. Lately I have been wanting to use more purple in my quilts. It is remarkably difficult to find good shades of purple. I am really liking purple with yellow or with orange.
