building a log cabin quilt

Last Saturday I decided to pull out my log cabin blocks. I thought it would be fun to try to double the amount that I had made...so my goal was to make 18. In one day. (Yes, I was delusional!)
It's a  s  l  o  w   process. Making 14 blocks at a time takes awhile....
...AND it's messy!!! (This is just the tip of the iceberg. ha!)
A few days and hundreds of seams later, I have a total of 34 blocks complete. I only need 132 blocks for a king size quilt, so I'm about 25% done. That's encouraging, at least! This quilt is definitely a labor of love, but it's going to look so good on my bed.

Each block is 9 1/2" unfinished. The complete measurements for the blocks can be found here.

  4. Log cabin blocks will always speak to me, and these bright, scrappy blocks framed by low volume fabrics are certainly no exception! They are a labor of love, but at least doing groupings of them lend to chain piecing and progress.

  5. Log cabin has always been a favorite pattern. My inch and a half drawer is jammed full.... Need to do something about that.

  6. All that scrappy goodness on the floor. Sometimes I would just love to have a bag of someone else's scraps for the sake of fun and variety. I am loving the log cabin up on the wall. Keep it up. Can't wait to see the end result.

I admire your ability to choose those colors that work so beautifully together. I can't wait to see the finished product. Do you have a small ironing station nearby to press? Is it a messy hairy square until it's done or do you trim as you go? I'd love to see your building process.

  12. I think the key to making these blocks is to iron all your scraps first and then get out the Accuquilt and cut them. I am ready to do this next year too. I have tons of fabric that need to be cut up and I just hate to do it. Your quilt is amazing and I'm so glad you posted this picture, it's my kind of quilt and I have the fabric for it. Don't need a king size, but a gueen would be nice.

  13. Wowsers! This is a step beyond your normal craziness :)

The thing that impresses me is these blocks are scrappy and precise. It's one thing to make wonky log cabin blocks where almost any size log can be added but these require extra cutting (and hence make more scraps). I'm cheering you on!

  14. The blocks are looking wonderful! Log cabin is one of my favorite blocks. I have a top all made from late 70's fabrics. I started hand quilting it, but then it got set aside. Years later it was pretty dirty and I no longer used polyester batting, so I took out the bit of hand quilting I had done, removed the basting, and washed the backing and the top. I haven't got to quilting it yet, but this time I will be free motion machine quilting it and replacing the batting with 80/20. I will be checking in to see your progress! It is going to be stunning!

  22. The first quilt I ever made was back in 1977. I was in high school and decided I wanted to make a quilt. I made a queen size log cabin. I loved it then and still love it now. It has been used to the point of being terribly worn.

This log cabin is going to be amazing. Keep making those blocks - the scrappy brights with the low volumes is so cheerful.
