I have another finished quilt to share this week....that makes two in a row! Hurray for the structure that the school year brings! Ha!
This quilt is based on a traditional block called crossed canoes. I drafted the templates in Illustrator and used those templates to piece the quilt. That was a new experience for me. It was time consuming and challenging, but definitely worth it. The first block I made was paper pieced and I didn't care for that method for two reasons: all of the bias edges and all the fabric waste. This quilt could look quite different if the values were rearranged. As always, so many possibilities!
A portion of the fabric used in the quilt is from the "I Want Her Stash" bundle that I chose for Westwood Acres. (It was a lot harder to pick a bundle than I thought it would be!!! I am happy with how it turned out, though.) I love this color scheme and I have plans to make more projects using it.
I quilted it with a simple crosshatch on my Janome Horizon. I only broke one needle while quilting. (I call that a win...some of those intersections are pretty bulky!) I'm so glad that I was able to find the broken needle tip and that it didn't make a hole in my quilt. (!!!!) I marked all the quilting lines with my Hera marker, which is one of my favorite tools.
I used a sweet pink gingham that was extra wide, so I didn't have to do any piecing on the back. I could get used to that!
I machine bound it with a soft gray good neighbors print. (I LOVE those little piggies!)
The quilt measures about 48" square....and it was made using mostly stash fabrics. That still does happen once in awhile around here. :)
How about you? Do you have a finish to share this week? If so, please link up! Thank you, as always, for joining me for finish it up Friday!
I love this quilt and the bundle colors you picked for it are just gorgeous!! Such a pretty finish and such a fun design!!! And yes, gotta love the structure of school ;) My baby girl started preschool this year so now I have 2 1/2 hours each day of blissful uninterrupted sewing time. (of course, I am ignoring the laundry and dishes, but what ya gonna do :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous quilt! One I will definitely have to make...for obvious reasons!
ReplyDeleteOh what a gorgeous pattern! - how did you do the rest of the blocks once you stopped paper piecing? I love the colour combination, it's very back to school - all the colours of school stationery!
ReplyDeletenice quilt - love the simple quilting on it. suits it to a T
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt, Amanda Jean! I love your color choices, and agree with you totally about Hera markers - worth their weight in gold!
ReplyDeleteI've always loved this pattern, even though I know it as Tippecanoe. Someday I will make one. Yours is so fresh and lovely! Wendy at piecefulthoughts@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt. Love the colors and that pattern has been on my bucket list for some time.
ReplyDeleteReally like the shapes - really does look like a canoe and the choice of fabric suits brilliantly
ReplyDeleteGreat pattern, colors and fabrics!
ReplyDeleteWow! That is a great quilt. Love the block and the fabrics you chose.
ReplyDeleteLove the colour palette you chose! And nice quilt too btw.
ReplyDeleteSaw this on Instagram, and absolutely loved it! Your fabric selection for the stash collection is amazing and they are perfect for this quilt pattern. Thanks for the suggestion on the Hera marker. I don't know how people quilted before computers, the internet and helpful blogs!
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love the quilt and the color scheme. I think I may need to add that pattern to my list of want to make quilts. I have lots of stash to use up and I am trying to buy only backing when I must.
ReplyDeleteWow! Just wow! I've looked at this pattern before (in very dark, traditional fabrics) and wondered why anyone would want to make a full quilt with this block. Now I have an answer! It's so clean and fresh in your colors. And those text fabrics in neutrals are perfect. Now I wish I'd made an updated one way back (in the day) when I first saw the pattern. Love, love, love it!
ReplyDeleteThat quilt is so beautiful! I love your fabric choices... It sounds like it was a lot of work as you decided to go with templates. I haven't used the Hera marker yet - do you mark the quilt before you make the sandwich? Relax over the weekend, Denise. derussell22 at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteThe design you created is fantastic. I love it. And I also love my Hera marker!! Such a great way to mark quilting lines. Do you get to keep this one or is it intended for someone? Awesome finish either way.
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful, perfect points, great design. I love this one!!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great finish. I love the colours.
ReplyDeleteI love your quilt. It's beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt pattern and colors!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting pattern, and your fabrics and quilting are perfect! ---"Love"
ReplyDeleteThose canoes look lovely. I did this block 2" square! Lovely to see yours so big and bold.
ReplyDeleteEverything about this quilt is perfect, right down to the photo shoot.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt! I love how you used a traditional design - best of both worlds!
ReplyDeleteAmanda, have you tried the freezer paper method of paper piecing? I learned how to do it from Rachel at Wooden Spoons. There are no papers to remove (and each template can be used many times)and very little fabric waste using this method. I've done 2 quilts this way and will never go back!
The quilt looks very nice in front of the red barn!
ReplyDeleteKATRIN W.
Fabulous!!
ReplyDeleteAmanda, which is the main differnce between modern and traditional quilt?
That is beautiful - the fabrics, the design and the quilting!
ReplyDeleteI love your quilt! Have wanted to make a crossed canoes quilt for awhile, but was scared of the pattern. Is your patten available to purchase? I have the perfect fabric bundle to make one of my own!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love this quilt - everything about it is perfect, the design, the color palatte, the cross hatching, the photography. You should kit this one!!
ReplyDeleteWhat an absolutely beautiful quilt! I love the design/pattern and the fabric choices are magnificent. The simplicity of the quilting was spot on!
ReplyDeleteI love the crossed canoes design! I was playing with that last year, our guild's fest theme was "Quilt Camp" but it didn't play out at that time. After the move I should look for my starting blocks and see what I can finish with them. Love your color scheme!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love your newest quilt! These little pigs are way too cute. <3
ReplyDeletei love the visual this block makes!
ReplyDeleteI too am interested if you are going to write up the pattern. It's not one I've seen before but would be a wonderful gift for a friend who won a medal in 1984 Olympics for canoeing. Thanks for all your inspiration.
ReplyDeleteOk, Amanda Jean your name should be Amanda Genius...quilt genius! Darn! I LOVE this quilt! Do I say that every time?!!!? Love the colors, fabrics, quilting, binding, EVERYTHING!
ReplyDeleteNow that my rant in over...can I ask? are you planning to show how you made the blocks? :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute quilt! I think I need to go look through some old block patterns and make them up in modern prints. What fun!
