Day one...
I used triangle scraps that were cut off from a snowball block (or something similar) mixed with gray to make tiny little triangles. Each HST finishes at about 3/4"!!! (This was a bugger to make. I did a lot of stitch ripping!) But, it was worth it in the end. It measures about 3 1/2" square. It's scrap project #148. (I love it!)
Day two....
More gray background and more bright colored triangle scraps for day two. This one uses a stitch and flip method. It measures about 4" square and it is scrap project # 149. (I love this one, too!)
Day three....
I started with the stripe pincushion (top). I got the idea for the window pane pincushion (bottom left)while I was making the first pincushion, and I just had to try it out! I love the woven effect that it has. The last pincushion (bottom right) utilized the scraps from the second one. And so it goes! They were fun to make...and I love the bold color combination of lime and navy. This trio is scrap project #150.
Day 4....
I got fancy on the 4th...I made a 4 tier birthday cake out of Liberty scraps. The cake idea was from my daughter...and it was fitting, since I share my birthday with my sister AND the entire country! The pincushion on the right was a birthday gift from my friend Mary. (Thanks so much, Mary!) The Liberty pincushion is scrap project # 151.
(A crazy side note about the Liberty scraps...they were sent to me by Anne Day back in 2010(!!!) when her and I did a scrap swap challenge. Time flies!)
Day five...
This one uses skinny strips...most of them were 1" wide or less to start with. It was simple and easy to make. I love the bright, happy colors. It's scrap project #152!
A few notes about the pincushions....each one is filled with crushed walnut shells (sold as lizard litter in larger pet stores). They each start as a tiny quilt block, essentially. I quilt the block onto a scrap of batting. The backings are regular quilting cotton with a light layer of interfacing, so that the fabric is a bit more stable. All of these elements add up to a soft, sturdy pincushion.
Now, to answer the often asked question, what do you do with all of your pincushions? I give them to friends! And a few of them become a part of my permanent collection. Just the way it should be. :)
Happy Birthday, Amanda Jean! I love the pincushion you gave me. xo.
ReplyDeleteLovely pincushions! I am wanting a small project to tackle, and a pin cushion sounds like the perfect thing!
ReplyDeleteI love them all and I'm sure by the end of the month there will be enough room in my heart to love 25 more! :) I made a pin cushion last week...pretty fun- it is VERY similar to your navy and lime ones and is 4x4. Can I ask a question? Do you just sew them right sides together, leaving a hole to fill then stitch up by hand?
ReplyDeleteCute pincushions! Can't wait to see the next ones.
ReplyDeleteThese are so fun!!! I am so excited to see these throughout the month ;) And I hope you had a very Happy Birthday!!!
ReplyDeleteI think I'd make more, but the fussiness of hand stitching them closed gives me anxiety!
ReplyDeleteThese are so lovely! Your friends are very lucky!
ReplyDeleteHow fun! These are all beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday!! :-) These are all fabulous ~ looking forward to seeing the other 20+ pincushions this month :-)
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! There's nothing like a dose of your pincushions to brighten the day!
ReplyDeleteI really love pincushions. And yours are so sweet. Thanks for all the ideas. I'm in a constant pincushion swap with Bea, and I needed some new ideas.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to celebrate July. What a wonderful start to the month.
ReplyDeleteThere's just something about tiny blocks that are so stinkin' cute! I look forward to seeing your creations daily on Instagram.
ReplyDeleteI am a little late with my wishes for you to have a happy birthday, I hope it was an enjoyable day for you. Not all of us have fireworks celebrations on our birthdays, pretty special I would say!
ReplyDeleteAmanda Jean these are so cute. As I scrolled through the post, I saw the first on and said that was my favorite, then no the second one, no the third one. They are all so adorable. I've never made a pincushion. I'm a new quilter and the tiny pieces scare me. Maybe one day! I can't wait to see the rest of them.
ReplyDeleteThis is a fun idea, I can't wait tot see all of them done. My favourite so far is the day 1, yellow triangles pincushion. x
ReplyDeleteCRazy ! I love it ! Hope you had a Happy Birthday !
ReplyDeletea lovely idea to use up tiny scraps ^^
ReplyDeleteI'm not a user of pincushions as I prefer a magnetic plate but these have given me the idea for lavender bags. A friend has promised me some more lavendar from her garden later in the year, so I could probably start sewing in preparation ^^
Lovely work -,Happy Birthday:))
ReplyDeleteCan you do a tutorial on HOW to make one of these? For those of us too scared to sew a piece less than 2.5" square?
ReplyDeleteVery cute.....happy belated birthday too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun challenge! There is no end to tiny, scraps and perfection...all packed in to one little 'pillow'! It makes me want to fill a basket full. Thanks for the tip on the walnut shells. I never would have thought to look at a pet store!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a fun idea. I can't wait to see the whole gang gathered for a photo shoot!
ReplyDeleteLove your pincushions!
ReplyDeleteGreat challenge for July. Can't wait to see the rest.
ReplyDeleteI looked back to your mini-9 patch pincushion tutorial and see that you use 1/4" seams. Do you trim them down to reduce bulk? They are all so cute and would make lovely gifts. Belated Happy Birthday.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! My daughter turned 15 on the 4th -- it's an interesting birthday to have.
ReplyDeleteI only began sewing two months ago -- I am working on my third quilt top (Very proud of my first completed quilt), but I may need to set that aside to try your 9 patch pincushion. Thanks for all the inspiration.
How about a pincushion Dresden Plate?! I find myself oddly attracted to that shape.
So you get fireworks on your birthday every year! That's awesome--and I'm a little jealous. I share a birthday with George Washington but we've never had fireworks as far as I know.
ReplyDeleteI love, love those pincushions! All of 'em! My fav is the navy one made from the leftover scraps. Talk about using every inch of scraps! They all look like cute, tiny, perfect pillows!
These are so fun and varied. You are quite talented! I love the idea of walnut shells but I have a nut allergy. Do you know of anything like it that would work but isn't going to get me all itchy? Anyone every try heat-dried corncobs instead? I'm wondering if this will do the job too?

Thanks for this great post! I think I am inspired -- I bought the crushed walnut shells ages ago, and your pincushions were so cute that I will have to get to work. (I do enjoy reading your posts in my email!)
ReplyDeleteThanks for some great ideas! I love making pincushions too.
ReplyDeleteI loved everything about this post! Thanks for sharing your pincushion journey.
ReplyDeleteI'm in love! I think the cake one is the sweetest! I haven't been able to find the crushed walnut shells near me, what's another filling?

I love all your tiny scraps things!
ReplyDeleteOf course, I love the pincushion parade but I also love when you share that certain projects are buggers and involve ripping. I appreciate that you are keeping it real. Happy birthday again!
ReplyDeleteI have to say those are the cutest pincushions I have ever seen!
ReplyDeleteThose are really cute.
