I put together a little bright birch tree starter kit that I'd like to send to a new home. I've collected a huge variety of small pieces (and they are small) but they are perfect for my bright birch trees pattern! The great thing is, most of the pieces are ready to sew up...very little trimming will be required. The kit includes a copy of the print pattern and a tall pile of small scraps...just add the background fabric of your choice! If you don't like small scraps, please do not enter. ReplyDeleteI'm almost done with the top to my thrift store quilt. The top is basic rectangles cut from thrift store purchases (mostly interesting pillow cases), the back is a sheet from the thrift store, and the batting is a blanket from the thrift store. I'm learning a lot and trying to improve my basic skills, so using materials that aren't too dear makes me not too worried about perfection!

I am ready to back and baste a quilt based on Fresh Lemons' Starfall pattern, and am almost ready to do the quilting on a rainbow priest's stole. I took a few hours out today to copy a favorite child's drawing onto fabric with Sharpies and fabric crayons and make it into a quilted pillow. Fun times!

I have to admit that when I first saw the birch tree quilt I wasn't a fan of it, but it has been growing on me. I also don't seem to be able to let go of scraps. Most of my quilts are scrap quilts. Just got back from the LQS pin basting it (I don't have a big enough table at home and would.not.dare get down on the floor ... never able to get up again) and hope to get it quilted before the week is up.

The baby room is teal and gray with a woodland theme and BIRCH TREES painted in the corner! Wouldn't this pattern and bright scraps make a terrific quilt that just matches this cheery room!

ReplyDeleteIf I could just get motivated I am close to finishing two bags, a baby quilt and two full sized quilts. On the quilts, all I need to do is put the batting and backing together and quilt then bind, the bags just need their bindings on the tops and closures put on, the baby quilt needs me to figure out exactly how I am putting it together. (Once I do that, I am nearly finished!)

ReplyDeleteThe birch tree quilt was one of my favorites. I have a current WIP that's called sticks and it is very similar. My closest finish is a Lakehouse themed quilt for my best friend who is selling their family cabin in Northern Minnesota after having it in their family for more than 80 years. I started sewing on the binding and found I was 1 strip short. I left a leader and ender and went ahead and hand stitched the rest of the binding on. This quilt was sandwiched with a piece of combed wool from a roll of wool batting I bought at a rummage sale. It should keep my friend very warm and snuggy this winter.

ReplyDeleteI love scraps of any size or shape. I never have enough real scraps and usually must use yardage or fat quarters to supplement. I have occasionally bought other peoples' scraps from Goodwill. The quilt I am getting near to finishing is a Bonnie Hunter design called "Bricks and Stepping Stones" and most of the fabric is either old stash or scraps from Goodwill.

ReplyDeleteMy closest project to completion is two baby quilts--quilted, now just need to be bound. I also have a scrap vortex sewn and squared up, ready to be quilted as soon as I can prepare myself for that one!

ReplyDeleteI am a fan of scrap quilts, I have fun looking at all the different fabrics in them. I have several quilt tops complete that I'm afraid to quilt because I love them, and don't want to have to stare at a wonky quilt job I will do to them. But I have to think they aren't doing anyone any good just sitting there so maybe I'll find some courage. 😉

ReplyDeleteI have always liked this pattern. I just wasn't confident about picking the right background colors. I think that's very important with this quilt. I just finished a BIG scrap quilt with a zillion 9 patches. And an easy white background. I did't put a dent in all my scraps. I enjoyed the freedom of using scraps and I'm looking for a new project.

ReplyDeleteI like working with scraps, and you always use such cheery colors! I have a few quilts in progress, and which one I finish next will depend on which one I focus on first. The one that's been getting the most attention is a queen sized quilt that I've been hand-quilting for years. If I stay at my current pace, it should be done in 6 months or so.

ReplyDeleteI love this quilt! I have been looking at it over the past few weeks and thought it would be perfect to add some colour to my living room. I've been holding out until I finish a few other projects that are underway before starting something new. (Ha, ha, ha .... as if that has ever stopped a quilter from adding to her stash.)

ReplyDeleteI don't have any near finishes. My projects this year are year long mysteries but I do have a lap quilt that I completed in 2013, had quilted this year that only has a little bit of binding to do.

I love scraps!! Right now I have way too many projects in the works! I have two close to being finished... Our oldest grandson is going to be six soon and he got to pick a theme or color of a new quilt for his birthday. He chose a Superhero quilt and I need to finish the pieced backing so I can quilt it. I am also putting the binding (by hand on the back) on a scrap string quilt.

ReplyDeleteMy closest to finish quilt is a jean quilt for my nephew's graduation, last year. It is all basted! Then I have dozens of other projects started, project ADD. The ideas are constantly flowing. Scraps make the world better. Sometimes, when sewing with a friend, I ask her if I can throw something away. She gives me permission, that helps rid me of the tiniest stuff. She is the best!
ReplyDeleteI'm working on Elizabeth Hartman's Hedgehog quilt. I usually complete one project before starting another but I signed up for a Kaffe Fassett block swap so the Hedgehog quilt got boxed up and put away.

My scrap bag(s) is kind of like Christmas. When I look at it, or paw through it, I am reminded of projects that I have made, to whom they went and the joy (mostly) I had when making them. Getting someone else's scraps would be pretty fab.... count me in!!
ReplyDeleteI am working on quilting my scrappy pineapple quilt. It is the biggest quilt that I have quilted and I am getting quite a workout! I would love to have it finished so I can start something new. (I foolishly told my husband I would finish it before I started something new. I think I have cut enough fabric for five quilt tops during the process. You have to take breaks, right? Haha)

I have been hoarding for retirement (coming up soon~!) but you can NEVER have too many scraps. Really. Never. And this is one adorable little quilt. And though it's sure as certain I will never run out of quilts to make it's fun to have small projects to pick up and finish when I get involved in long drawn out ones. But, the good news is, my long armer just sent a message that two quilts are heading back home to me! So a summer full of sitting on the deck finishing their bindings is something lovely to look forward to. :-)
ReplyDeleteOh, this is beautiful! My closest finish is a wall-hanging size map of Africa quilt, made from scraps of fabric I bought or was given during several trips to Tanzania. It's a going away gift for a colleague at work.
ReplyDeleteI love scraps. It's a good thing because they seem to multiply overnight. I'm working on little (3.5") Wild and Goosey blocks with scraps from my pineapple quilt to make coordinating shams.
ReplyDeleteI have had my eye on your birch tree pattern for a while. I love quilting anything nature related. And I use every scrap to make 9" blocks to sew with lattice into tummy time quilts for babies. My smallest pieces--the trims--are all saved to give to the local animal shelter. They, in turn, give the bags to ladies at a nursing home who turn them into pet pillows. It's a delightful no waste cycle! :-) I just finished turning a tablecloth into a picnic quilt for the grandgirls (ages 1 and 3)--the back is made from all our old jeans saved over the years.
