dot your i's update
My dot your i's quilt has been sitting untouched for quite some time, until recently. That's ok, because this quilt is more about the process than the final result. That being said, I think I will like the final quilt quite a lot!
My boys both run track, so this has been one of the portable projects that I pack up when we head to their meets.
Each of the squircles (square circles) are appliqued onto a 4" background square. I am using Carolyn's method of needle turn applique and I enjoy it quite a lot. I like working on one small square at a time and adding it to the "done" pile. It's satisfying to see the project come along over time.
This isn't the best photo because it's a rainy, dreary day, but you can get a feel for the quilt so far. I think it needs a lot more aqua....and pinkish red! I'm aiming for a total of 396 blocks. I have 176 done, so only 220 to go! Not. too. bad.

Love this project! Four inch background is small to work with...how do you keep it so flat? Use lots of pins on the circle?
ReplyDeleteI need a take-along project, and this would be perfect. When I see numbers like 396 (or even 176 or 220) I kind of freak out, but I think I need to get over that. :-) I've taken a couple of classes from Carolyn and have enjoyed them thoroughly.

This is such a great, happy quilt! I'm not a lover of hand sewing, but these days, I feel like we live at the baseball field, and I wish I had something to take along.

ReplyDeleteI think, when you've made a few fabric lines you should do a print like this that brings them all together, and make it wide for backing! 😜 It's just incredible!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beauty! I love seeing quilts where you can see all the time and handwork that has gone into it - I do not touch applique. It stresses me out! :) But I wholly appreciate when other people can do it. I look forward to seeing how it is quilted. :) Hannah
ReplyDeleteThese are neat projects. I made one (cannot remember the designer - darn) and the pattern required to draw a 2 1/2"or 3" square grid on the background fabric. Then I cut out 2 1/2" squares and needle turn applique them on on the fabric grid. It turned out neat - I used batik scrap.

ReplyDeleteQuite appealing. I'm working on a circle quilt, hand appliqueing the circles, and I though a minimum of 99 was daunting! As you say, it's not the finish, but the process, and I'm sure it will take me a good while, as I'm only 1/3 of the way there. You give me such inspiration! Happy day! XO

ReplyDeleteHi Amanda--great looking circle quilt project. I also followed link back to start trying to figure out size of scrap you are using for circle inside the 4" square base. I'm guessing your unfinished circle must be 2 1/2 " from appearance of photos? I've been making same type project of Quilty 365 but I can't seem to get proportions of finished circle to please me. I've tried 3" finished circle in 4 1/2 " square, and guess I'll just keep going smaller--but I'd really appreciate if you shared your dimensions that you are using on the circles in your photographs.
