Welcome to finish it up Friday!
I'm excited to have another quilt finish to share today!
borders and make it a wall/baby quilt size instead. I'm so glad I made that decision! This is a bit of a departure from my usual work, but I love it for that reason. It's good to stretch yourself once in awhile!
For the fabric, I used a mini charm pack of
doe, plus Kona cotton in white and iron, all by
Robert Kaufman.
I quilted it a la
Carolyn Friedlander with lots of dense stitching. Some of it was done with my free motion foot, some was done with my regular foot. I didn't use my walking foot at all! It was fun to make up the quilting as I went, but I did use a
hera marker to mark most of the lines. It was a nice safety net.
For the backing I used a solid goldenrod fabric. (I'm not sure of the company or color...it came from
SR Harris.) I like--and don't like--that it shows ALL of the quilting. No room for error! But, it is a nice contrast to the front. I used
Aurifil thread in my favorite color, 2600. I think it goes with
everything!
For the binding I used an old Katie Jump Rope fabric that I scored around this time last year. I may save all of the two yards of it that I bought for binding...I LOVE how it looks on the edge of a quilt!
So much good texture in this quilt...and it hasn't even been washed yet! The quilt measures 42" square. I'm happy to have it done! Hurray for finishes!

The simplicity of this quilt is perfect. MY love for Doe keeps on growing. Major compliments on the backing and binding choice!

ReplyDeleteVery nice design and I love the quilting and the binding. On Denyse Schmidt's website it says there is a reissue of Katie Jump rope coming soon. Don't know if that info is up to date but fingers crossed.

It looks wonderful... Quilting does take a long time, particularly when you are 'designing' every part of the quilt. Beautifully done!

ReplyDeleteI am also working on a quilt using Doe and initially I wasn't so sure about the fabric collection. It's a commission quilt so I didn't pick the fabric but now that I have spent quite a bit of time cutting and piecing, I love the fabric. It's a very calm collection. Your quilt is beautiful - the quilting is stunning. Thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteLove the quilt you finished this week! I adore the doe fabric collection and am about half-way done with the Outhouse wall-hanging (also designed by Carolyn Friedlander). I decided to make the wall-hanging to get over my fear of paper-piecing blocks. I haven't decided what I'm going to use for the backing or the binding... Thanks for sharing your talents!

ReplyDeleteI love your Doe quilt Amanda!!! The texture is incredible. Hard to believe it hasn't been washed yet. The gold backing fabric is a nice contrast to the front and selecting that Katie Jump Rope print for the binding is perfect!! You've inspired me to make another Doe quilt ;-)))

ReplyDeleteI really love the texture all those quilting patterns give your quilt. I'm just getting into quilting with a walking foot and have a question: when you have rows of lines meeting at right angles with another line of stitching what do you do with all the thread ends? There must be hundreds!

I've got a charm pack and could easily see this super-sized. Plus, I'm just even more excited about my Juki arriving soon, knowing that you quilted this without a walking foot!

ReplyDeleteThis quilt really appeals to me with the contrast between the simple design and the more complex quilting. The colors are some of my favorites, and it has such a pleasing, clean aesthetic. I have a half-yard of the Carolyn Friedlander yarrow weave fabric that I am saving for something special.
