Work In Progress Bag pattern

Someday I am going to write a blog post about how hard pattern writing is. Today, I am going to celebrate the fact that I finished another one! The Work In Progress bag pattern is complete (YAY!!!) and it is available for purchase here. Phew!
I was inspired to make these bags after seeing a few different WIP bags around, coupled with the fact that I needed a decent way to keep my collection of 22 WIPs organized. The design for the bag is my own and it is something that I worked out through a lot of trial and error. (It took me 5 tries just to get the zipper install worked out!) I'm very pleased with the results and I LOVE how uniform my WIPs are now. Vinyl isn't scary to use at all, and I love that you can easily view the contents without opening the bag.
I've included instructions for an alternate zipper placement--toward one end rather than through the center--if that suits your tastes. (I think this bag might be my favorite!)
I've made 17 of these babies so far! I may have been a little zealous in my pattern development. Hahaha! Only a few more to go and all my WIPs will have their own bag. But, at this point, I think it's time to finish a few quilts! I MAY have had my fill of zippers for the time being. Can you imagine?

To celebrate the release of the pattern, I will be giving away 3 copies of the PDF pattern. If you would like a chance to win, please leave me a comment in this post. In your comment, I would like to hear about how many WIPs you have. (I know, that's kind of like asking a woman her age, but it's the subject of the day, so I kind of feel justified!) :) I'll pick the winners in a few days.

Edited to add: the giveaway is now closed. Thanks to all of you who entered!

  1. I once thought it would be a great idea to track my WIP's on a spreadsheet. After listing the first 50 WIP's, I gave up that idea! Way too many WIP's!

  2. This is a fabulous idea! Great pattern.

  3. I love these bags! I was recently given a zipper foot, but I'm clueless as to how to use it--eek!

I believe I have 6 WIPS on the pile-unless there are some tucked away from 10 years ago that I don't remember. Lately the only sewing I've been doing is things that are gifts or done with an intended purpose/deadline, so I haven't had a chance to get too many things I just want to do for the fun of it completed.

  4. The bag is very clever! I'm sure in the end it will be worth the effort, pattern writing in general is hard!

WIP... yikes there's a few, but one in particular that I'm hoping to finish up at a quilt retreat next month. Congrats on a great design.

  5. I absolutely love this! I have a tiny space for storage and these pattern bags would be perfect!

  6. I don't have that many WIP because I am rather obsessive about finishing a sewing project I've started. Ithink I have 4. Thanks for the greatgiveaway.

  7. I'm only going to guesstimate, I have 8 shop quilts in progress and 6 personal projects in progress...that feels like a lot for me, my oldest is actually my first ever quilt (all hand sewn hand quilted) and its 24 years old! Eek

  8. Such cute bags! I have about a dozen quilts in progress at the piecing stage. Then I have at least 20, but probably more completed tops that need to be quilted and bound. And then, I have probably 15 or so project piles containing all the fabrics and the pattern but I haven't even started them yet.

  9. Your wip bags and your scrap baskets are giving me great ideas for my sewing room reorganization project. As far as the question about number of works in progress - I will let you know when the room reorganization is finished. However, I will need about a year.

  10. Love these bags! I think I have 27 WIPs. There might be more, but those are the ones that I definitely remember :)

    ReplyDelete
  11. I think I've got about 6 or 7 projects in progress. I just love these bags, thank you for writing up your pattern.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Wow. These are so great!! I have 5 WIPs. I try not to start too many things. Lol.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Great bag! I have five WIP garment sewing, five quilt WIP, and a few craft sewing projects...more than time allows :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. I currently have 10 left, this week was all about crossing off some easy wip that have just been sitting around far too long. I already have more projects lined up in my head ready to go!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think I have about 5 - which is pretty good, right? I've mixed emotions about this pattern - I'm afraid it might encourage me to keep more WIPs so I can create more bags. Egads!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I have two long term EPP. I tend to make other quilts or projects as gifts and those have deadlines!

    ReplyDelete
  17. one sewing WIP...but about 5+ knitting ones!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I have 12 WIPs that come immediately to mind. This bag will be so handy because I am losing pieces.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'd say at least 6. But have 4 swaps in the cue ready to go, so I guess you could say 10.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I can think of eight off the top of my head, and I am not counting any that I have everything together, but nothing cut. I am about to add La Passacaglia to the list, so would love these bags to keep track of everything. Love these and would love to win the pattern. Congrats on this idea.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 2 wips...um yup...2. I am thinking of putting my crochet wips in these too😛👊if I don't win, I'm buying the pattern. Yes mam I am!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Less than 20 sewing, about 10 knitting:)

    ReplyDelete
  23. 6 in progress, and 3 more that im planning to start soon!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Love the see throug possibility of these bags. I must have at least 20 wips, of which about 15 have there own box (see through!) with all the materials for the patrern in it and some zip lock bags stashed together.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Three on my to do list and four wips

    ReplyDelete
  26. I only have 4 or 5 WIPs - but I've only been sewing for 2 years! Too many WIPs makes me twitch.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I have at least 16. maybe more. I have recently given up on projects and restored the fabric to my stash. I love your project bags.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It is like asking a woman her age! But I do love these bags. Brilliant for finished blocks, or flimsies needing borders, or just about any stage in between and along the way.

Okay, I'll come clean. Somewhere in the 40s. I think. I dare not count. I have a huge pile of quilts just needing quilting, so those are almost done at least.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The bags are great.
I have a couple of drawers labelled "Finished Tops."
And I have stacked plastic bins with various labels.
I haven't got the courage to count my WIPs--but I suspect it is near 50. I would love to win your pattern.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm a light weight--I have 4. Those four have patterns and fabric set aside for them. I have several more of course in my head or on the docket that I haven't pulled fabric for yet. These kind of bags may help me get more WIPs lined up. 😂😂😂

    ReplyDelete
  31. I only have 1 quilt wip...but 4 knitting ones.

    ReplyDelete
  32. These bags are awesome! I currently have about 10 WIPs....wait small projects don't count, right? :-) Thanks for the opportunity to win this great pattern!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I have so many WIPs! From a quilt to crochet, embroidery, and even a cute little tip for my little baby girl. These look like a great way to get organized!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Thanks for the giveaway! I probably have around 4 small epp projects going, 5 quilt tops waiting to get quilted, and 5 knitting projects on needles. I need to get going and get some checked off!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well let's just say when I opened the closet door things started falling out. I NEED HELP!

    ReplyDelete
  36. These are a GREAT idea! I have about 20-30 WIP! I was amazed when I actually started writing them down! They multiply quickly!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anonymous5:27 PM

Hmmmm, I don't know that I can tell you exactly how many WIPs I have at the moment...probably 6 that I am working on now. The other 20+ would probably be given UFO status, at least until I pull them back out and start working on them again!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hmmm, my guess would be in the range of 15! Yikes!

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's probably better that I don't count? But I love the pattern!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm guessing I have between 20-40 works in progress from sewing, quilting, crocheting and needlework projects. Looks a versatile design!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Anonymous5:32 PM

The wip bag are so cute! As to how many wipe do I have - who knows. Too scared to count. I do know some o tem are older that my teen age children.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I would like to say I only have a couple WIP. But as I look around my sewing room I hope it is not a couple hundred WIP. LOL. Your bags are awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ummm..just checked my list and I am down to a whopping 29. But I did finish one today so I keep working away to reduce the number. Those bags are a great way to stay organized!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I have to many to count! At least 15.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oh my! 25-30 projects of various intensity to finish. I seem to get to 80% than wait to finish. Ugh!

    ReplyDelete
  46. HMMM, it depends on what you consider a work IN progress! Is it that you've bought the fabric? Bought the pattern? Put the two items together? I have too many to count if any of the above apply. I have finished a couple of WIPs in the past year. Some from many, many years ago. I have at least 2 full size quilt tops ready for quilting; a flag ready for quilting; a baby quilt ready for quilting. So, let's just say four!!! thanks for the opportunity. Love those WIP bags. You've done a great job with those.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I am feeling pretty good about only having 7 WIP at the moment - but they don't look very attractive piled in grocery bags at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  48. much cuter than mt zip lock bags

    ReplyDelete
  49. Great idea for being organized and a good present for a quilter who has everything. I have 8 unfinished items on the go. Made a rule last year that when I finished a new quilt I had to finish a started project and I am whittling down my unfinished items. Kath

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm not in my studio so I'm counting in my head here, but I THINK I have 7 WIPs. Not counting things where I've pulled the fabric but not yet cut into them. Because then we'd just be getting a crazy number. :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. I have at least 20 WIPs, and that is just quilting. I don't even want to think about my knitting projects!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I just finished 2 and have 11 to go. I need these bags in my life! They are so cute! Congrats!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Can we define WIP? Is it design conception, fabric pull, first cut or sew? Finished but unquilted tops don't count, do they?

    ReplyDelete
  54. At last count I had 17 WIP's. I use shoe boxes to keep my WIP's organized but these bags are way cuter!

    ReplyDelete
  55. This is awesome! Thanks so much for making the pattern! WiPs... Hmmm I'm not sure how many I have. I'd say at least 15. These include things that I have fabric for but have not started..... :) Thanks for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I have between 20 and 25 WIPs. Knocked a couple off the list in January. Love your project bags!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Goodness, I think I have about five? Thanks for the chance to win! :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'll admit to 14. Sigh. Maybe these bags will be the key to finishing! Any tips on vinyl and where and what type to buy?

    ReplyDelete
  59. 1-ready to bind. 1-ready to quilt. 1-top done and side B blocks finished. 1-7 of 16 blocks pieced. 1-cut & ready to piece, 2-embroidery projects. 1-ancient purse project. 2-guild blocks to make. That makes 10.

    ReplyDelete
  60. What a great way to store WIPs! I even have vinyl sitting around! I can think of 4 big quilt WIPs and 5 smaller projects in some stage of completion.

    ReplyDelete
  61. 44! I've decided to be proud of the number, as in I've had 44 ideas that were worth starting! :D I don't think I'll be making 44 bags though... Maybe only around 20 for the smaller wips. Once they get giant they go into scrapbook paper storage boxes, or cute shoe boxes, or other random places.... Please don't ask me to find all 44!!! :P

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'd love a copy of your pattern. I have 4 quilt wips in my stash and about the same for smaller projects. Not TOO bad. I'm pretty big on finishing. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Awesome bags, I always have 10 to 15 projects going on all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I have been researching vinyl and planning to make these bags. I was going to figure it out myself, but a pattern would come in handy.
I counted about 15 WIPs in the cupboard of shame and other almost 30 listed on my sewing desk whiteboard.

    ReplyDelete
  65. You made me count... 9. Ugh. Great pattern. Thanks for the chance.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I would love to have the pattern for your WIP bags, if only to learn how you made the zipper look so clean and even and how everything turns out straight! Not to mention the bags would be a great alternative to the pizza boxes, plastic totes, shoebox lids, bins, piles, and stacks in disarray throughout my sewing space! A quick count reveals 15, and that doesn't include the quilt tops hanging in the closet, waiting to be quilted. Yipes!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Cute bags! I probably have around 10 that are at different stages.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I have 11 quilt tops that just need quilting (some with backing and binding already made!). I haven't really counted my WIP but I fear it could quite easily be up near 20...

I'm loving these bags! I'm going to have to make some!

    ReplyDelete
  69. I try to never have more than three going at one time

  74. Love the bag. Need to make a couple. I have 3 wips. Not too bad

  75. Love vinyl bags-I've only done bitty ones. I have 11 quilt tops done and maybe 7 more being pieced. Embaressing but true. Actually, I have some minis that need quilting so maybe another 4?

    ReplyDelete
  76. I always get overwhelmed when i list my wips. If i just keep working them it is much better. Denial is sometimes good. Ha ha!!!!
Loving this pattern. Thanks for hosting this give away. Mrscummings2u at Gmail dot com

  77. I'm afraid to count my WIPs. I can think of 3-4 without even looking. I like the image of each WIP in a little bag of its own. My problem is that I have knitting projects (at least 2 WIP) and clothing projects and other crafty things ready to work on. Love the stack of WIP bags- so colorful! I can imagine it's motivational too!
Your blog is VERY motivational! Love following your projects!

    ReplyDelete
  78. I love the bags! Could you put two zippers starting in one corner that open away from each other? You could peel back the cover to place or remove your pieces.(...if you have a lot of zippers on hand...)

    ReplyDelete
  79. 5 WIPS
    6 ready to quilt
And one needing to finish the binding.
Seams I never change these numbers
    Yup need to make bags!!

I probably have about 6 WIPs, but my 'wish' list of quilts/projects to make is about a mile long. Love these bags.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I love this idea! I've kind of been hoarding WIPs for a while because my family is getting ready to move to Japan and my husband will be deployed on an aircraft carrier about half the time we are there. So I've got to have plenty of WIPs (I haven't even kept count!) to keep me busy while he's gone. I've been suring up my stash and starting a ton of projects to take with me. These bags would be perfect for the limited space we will have while there!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Oh, I love your new bag and the different sizes. What a great gift idea these would be. Count me in-Please.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I never count them up. All I have to do is open the drawers and there they are! These are adorable!

    ReplyDelete
  87. I don't feel so bad after reading some of these comments. I have 4 quilts on the go and at least 10 quilt tops that need to be quilted and bound. It's the free motion quilting that holds me back from finishing! Would love to win this pattern.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I have about 7 wips and 10 quilt tops waiting to be quilted. Love these bags as you can see at a glance what's inside. I can think of so many uses for them. Travel, diaper bag, backpack storage and tech device cord storage just to name a few. Would love to win the pattern.

    ReplyDelete
  89. These are looking great! I love vinyl for pouches and bags.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I have been using large zip lock bags but these are do much prettier.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I have 6 WIP's on the go right now. I would make some bags to store fabric for my future projects too! Thanks for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  92. I have only been quilting for a year. I have only 5 WIPs (projects that have been started). But how do you count the charm packs and jelly rolls that have no pattern attached?. Your bags look so perfect. If I don't win I will be buying the pattern.

    ReplyDelete
  93. We're just not going to go there. Let's just say I have way more than enough. Have a great day. Love the project bags. :-)

    Deborah

    ReplyDelete
  98. I don't know for sure, but I think I'm approaching 20. Definitely working on lowering that number. I LOVE your WIP bags

    ReplyDelete
  99. Ughh to admit it means I have a problem, but my last count was somewhere around 25, and I'm really afraid the number is bigger. After Quiltcon is over I plan to make a lot of these bags!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  100. I love these pouches. Thanks for being creative and coming up with them. I'm trying to ignore the number of WIP's, but definitely in the range of 20 that need to be done. Thanks for the giveaway.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Funny that you should ask about WIPs. Our modern guild is doing a WIP challenge where we each made a list of 12 WIPs (one for each month of the year) and at every guild meeting this year we are drawing a number from a hat and working on that WIP through the month. So...that lets you know I have at least 12 WIPs at the moment. And shhhh, don't tell anyone but maybe even a few more. I love your see-thru bags and thanks for the chance to win a pattern.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Once I got to 40, I stopped counting. I'm also drowning in unstarted objects (aka kits). My quilty friends and I call this "buying the dream." ;)

    ReplyDelete
  122. At the moment, I think I have about five - that number varies. But that's only my personal WIPS. For the quilt ministry, we have probably close to 100 at any given time.... Love the way these look! They are awesome!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  125. I need one of these bags! I gave about 8 WIPs.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  133. We are in the process of remodeling a house we bought & trying to get moved in within the next couple of weeks. I haven't sewn in a few months but I think I remember only having 5 WIP. I tried really hard to finish before we moved from our previous house, so yay for me. :)

    ReplyDelete
  134. What a great project. I have at least 4 large WIPs and an army of projects planned in my head or on my to do lists.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Love them! I have made a few, mostly on the small side and love to use for my paper piecing. Hmmm..... maybe 10ish? , only 3 quilts, others are little things

    ReplyDelete
  136. love these bags and love the fact you changed it up putting a zipper in the middle.I had some vinyl from another project (wip #1) that never happened - so it might get repurposed (hopefully winning a free pattern so it doesn't stay a WIP item) :) But for the rest of the quilty WIP I have without stressing my brain and realizing I have more then I want to admit in type - I'm thinking 7 and then I have a top that needs to be quilted, and a quilting top that needs to have threads buried and snipped and label added. But the wish list of want to make - yeah - a lifetime worth......THanks for your blog and inspirations!

    ReplyDelete
  137. I don't even know how many WIP's I have. I was thinking it was a lot until I saw one of your commenters that stopped counting at 50. I know I don't have that many.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Those are cool bags! I currently have 5 WIP. That is a lot for me, probably not for others but...I have about 8 projects I want to start. lol

    ReplyDelete
  139. Adorable and practical! I would need to make at least 5 for my WIPs!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  142. More than I would like to admit...probably at least 10+, but some are long term projects!

    ReplyDelete
  143. These are fabulous! I don't have many WIPS as I sewed like a crazy woman during December. So I might have about 6 or 7. That of course is not counting the fabric I have purchased for specific projects ;)

  144. I think these bags would be great for the 12 WIP I have to finish.

  145. I have 8 wip's right now. These bags would be great for organizing them and keeping me on track. I would love to win your pattern, I enter every contest I can, but I guess I'm not a winner! I keep trying!

  146. What a great idea! I recently bought one of those teflon-coated feet for my machine so this would be a great project to try it on. I'm still a rookie and only have 3 WIPs.

  147. Love this pattern! You could put a grommet in one corner with a ring to attach them all together or to hang for easy access!
I'm working on a quilt for my husband but have stalled cos I don't know how to square up 16" blocks!

    ReplyDelete
  148. Love these WIP pouches! I have 2 quilt WIP's that have actually been started, and at least 10 other projects with pattern printed and fabric chosen.

  149. Congrats on your new pattern release. I currently have 7-10 WIPS that I know of... The others are stored in bags that I have no idea what is inside them.
Great pattern... Can't wait to sew some up.

  150. I only have about 5 WIPs so I don't feel so bad as some! I love the clear vinyl, you can coordinate your WIP with the bag and it will look so pretty. Well done on your new pattern!

  151. So embarrassing! I have never counted because I am too scared, but it has to be at least 40! Yikes that is shameful!

  152. Um, off the top o' my head as I'm lying in bead, I think of nine. There may be more but I've got to work tomorrow and must go to sleep. So, I'm going with the nine. G'night all.

  153. I've enjoyed your WIP bag progress posts!
I have three WIPs... one quilt top that is waiting for me to decide what kind of back to put on it. One mustard+white that needs a few more blocks finished before sewing into a complete top. And one stack of random blocks I'm sort of keeping for a sampler type quilt. :)

  157. I have 8--that's not bad for 27 years of quilting! Unfortunately, one of them is from 1991. I've just got two borders left to hand quilt on that one; it may just end up on my longarm this year.

  162. I love your bags but must say, putting in a zipper scare the bajeebers out of me. I currently have 3 WIP's. I have restored a 100 year old quilt for a friend so I have it in the quilt frame, hand quilting new borders. I always work on hexies for a Grandmother's Garden quilt. Tomorrow I will be putting the binding on a quilt I made from a friend whose very difficult divorce became final after 3 years of grief.

  187. You want a real guesstimate or the lie I tell myself? hahaha I'll say I have about 10 works in progress. I'll let you decide if that's the hard facts or the reality that I can accept! :)

    ReplyDelete
  188. I might be forgetting one or two, but I think I have around 10. I'm so glad you made a pattern because I was just thinking that I needed some of those bags. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  189. I finished one WIP this week, but it still leaves 12 WIP and that's not counting some orphan blocks

  191. i'm so intrigued by your bags--what a clever idea! and you picked great fabrics for the binding. i don't have a lot of WIPs--finished one last year that was around 5 yrs old but i think that's it. i kinda like to finish a top before moving on. but do tops not quilted count? in that case--i have 3 tops that need to be quilted and am in the middle of a project right now. nonetheless i would make these bags!

    ReplyDelete
  192. I'm going to be totally honest and tell you that I have 15 WIPs at this point in time! I really do need your pattern!!! Thanks for the opportunity of winning.

  193. Let's see... The Kaffe Cassette purple hourglass hanging,, the wonky star baby quilt, the pink and green baby quilt, the navy and 30s prints bedspread, the quilt's worth of extra blue and yellow 9-patches, the Kaffe Bassett grid hanging, the Rebecca Rohrkaste sparkle quilt from at least 15 years ago, the quilt pieced from a Malaysian batik... And a few that are pieced but not quilted yet... About 12 at the moment, but I'll probably start another within the next few weeks.
