Welcome to finish it up Friday! I'm so pleased to have a finished garment to share today!
My friend Linda is working on her first garment pattern and I did some testing for her this week. (I thought quilt pattern writing was hard. I can NOT imagine garment pattern writing! Oh, boy!) It was good to have a deadline for testing or I would have procrastinated for weeks. Garment sewing scares me a little bit! (But it's also something I would like to do more of.)
It was hard to pick a fabric that both my daughter and I agreed upon. I wasn't crazy about her choice (and I wasn't sure that I wanted that many scraps of this fabric left over-hahaha!) but I gave up control and in the end I think it worked out well! I can pick out quilt fabric all day long. Picking out fabric for garments is a completely different story.
This is my first garment ever made with button holes...and they actually turned out pretty good! That feels like an accomplishment! I'm so proud of my friend Linda for writing such a great pattern. I have plans to make a few more of these dresses soon....no wonder "the list" never gets shorter! :)
This photo is proof that you can still chase bugs even if you are wearing a dress! Good to know, right?
Now it's your turn! Please link up your finishes for the week! Thanks for joining me for finish it up Friday!
Good job! And yes, garment sewing terrifies me too, although it was what I learned before quilting. I bet she loves her new dress!!
ReplyDeleteKind of fun to switch it up isn't it? I started out sewing clothing and made the switch to quilting.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the second picture. So funny!!
How I wish I could make dresses around here! I tried making shirts and shorts but the boys refuse to wear them *le sigh*
ReplyDeleteI think I need to make a matching dress for C. This is very cute. And tell A to STOP growing!!
ReplyDeleteLovely, both the dress and your daughter!
ReplyDeleteI love little girl home-made dresses. congrats on the button holes!
ReplyDeletesweet dress! I'm always impressed with garment sewing, since I've never been brave enough to try it!

It terrifies me, I've only made very basic garments and pillowcase dresses but will try more patterns in the future because I think it's so great to make clothes for my kids! The dress is sweet and a gorgeous blue, she has good taste :)
ReplyDeleteCute dress.
ReplyDeleteI used to make the entire family's clothes when I was younger. It was cheaper than buying back then.
I've had lots of fabric sitting here for shorts and tops for the granddaughters but just can't seem to get interested in getting any clothes made.
It's a darling dress, and it looks like it was a good dabble into construction. I was a garment sew-er long before I was interested in quilting. I made all my daughter's clothes, from age one to 12... when she didn't want homemade anymore, except for homecoming and prom dresses! I'm glad I had garment experience because: 1) I was sewing machine savvy and that helped me understand quilting, and 2) I've now had FOUR grandSONS who are all four years and under. I'll never have a granddaughter to sew for. (I feel so sorry for me!) So take advantage of this time in your life. It might not come again.
ReplyDeleteLove the dress! I feel the same way you do about garment sewing. I've done a couple, but they never turn out exactly how they should! :-). You've donee very well with the dress. Congrats!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful dress! Aren't you glad /thankful you have a girl!
ReplyDeleteGreat dress. I used to make all my daughter's clothes when she was younger. Not so much now xx
ReplyDeleteSo simple, yet so pretty. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful dress! I have a daughter that loved to wear dresses so I made matching bloomers. That way she could climb trees, do cartwheels and still maintain her modesty.
ReplyDeleteGarment-making isn't any harder than quilting. The only thing to remember is to pin-pin-pin. My mother taught me to always buy an extra half yard of fabric, so there would have left-overs for quilts, contrasting collars-n-cuffs, or fabric to make baby/toddler clothing.
Have fun making dresses for your daughter and if the dress doesn't turn out you can always cut it up for a quilt!
As beautiful as your quilts are, I was stunned to learn these were your first buttonholes. What a cute little dress, and I'd go nuts with those leftovers. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat little dress, she looks cute in it. No-one else seems to have commented before me so I thought I'd let you know that today's link-up isn't working anymore - there's a message that reads "(Cannot add links: Registration/trial expired)". I'll pop back later to see if all's sorted :D
ReplyDeletedarling little dress...feminine, modest and perfect for such a little lady...and for catching bugs!

why is the link party closed so early? It's 2:15 MST on Friday :( Cute dress bytheway.
ReplyDeleteI struggle with garment fabric choices too. But I like this one. So bright and happy! And nice job on the button holes!
ReplyDeleteLinky party seems to be closed - how sad! I'll enjoy the ones that made the cut today I guess.

ReplyDeleteOh I missed the linky :(
ReplyDeletelove the dress. I have learnt to let the kids pick their fabrics, they are wearing them after all!! Link seemed very short today - only a few hours. Sigh, I actually had a finish to link up.
ReplyDeleteSO sorry about the link up confusion. It was my mistake...and it's been fixed. Thanks for the heads up!
ReplyDeleteAmanda Jean
Thank you for fixing it! All linked up now - without it I'd never finish anything!
ReplyDeleteLove, Love LOVE this dress and the colour is divine!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for hosting this each week. It's so much fun to see what others have completed and fun when I do have a finish to be able to share it.
ReplyDeleteThe dress turned out lovely. I made a lot of our children's clothing. When they come home now, I sometimes apologize for having the sewing machine going but they all say that it reminds them of falling to sleep to the sound of the sewing machine whirring away on something new for them.
Oh, Abby looks adorable! I wish I could get my girls to wear pigtails still.
ReplyDeleteIt Looks great! I agree with you garment pattern scares me a little! I think the best way to start sewing garments is choosing a simple pattern. I usually cut in muslin first then I cut my precious fabric! It does worth it. I'd love to see more dresses from you!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely dress it's beautiful. And so is the colour and style.
ReplyDeleteway to go the dress looks great to me! bet you'll find a clever project to use up the scraps too!!
ReplyDeleteOh, ya! Now that is one pretty dress! A has made a perfect choice in colour and print. She looks lovely! Such great photos. Love the scrunchie face pic!
ReplyDeleteThanks for testing for me! Love the dress on Miss A! I hope to release the pattern around July 5th. I have a few fixes to make in the instructions portion of the pattern. :)
