First off, THANK YOU for all your kind comments about my
scrap vortex quilt! Since there were so many questions about the construction, I thought I would answer those here. I used the slab technique, as found in
Sunday Morning Quilts. I made
several irregular sized slabs and joined them together like a puzzle. It takes a lot of rearranging and tweaking as you go, but it's so worth it! Just keep making slabs and joining them together until the quilt is as large as you want. And to answer another question that came up several times, YES, I still have scraps left. Always, always, always!
Since scraps are the subject of the day (and every day...ha ha!), I have this pile of Denyse Schmidt Ansonia scraps to give away. The fabric isn't due to release until first quarter of 2014, according to the
free spirit website. I have these leftover from making the scrap happy purse that I
sewed up for market. (Pattern is available
here.) I have a small priority mail box FULL of scraps, ready to mail. (International entries welcome, as long as you are willing to pay the shipping overages if sent outside the US.) Please leave a comment on

Vicky asked me that question at retreat a few weeks ago and I thought that was a great question! I think it would be

I really don't know as I am still pretty new to quilting and don't know who is who. I would have to say Leah Day, just because I need help with FMQ and she is the woman in the know apparently.

I've already had the good fortune to take a workshop with Amanda Jean, and I can tell you she is a great teacher. She's very supportive, has lots of technique to share, and inspires her students to reach. Plus, she's fun to be around. Someone I'd like the chance to study with is Dianne Hire. She is an improvisational quilter. She has a book called Quilter's Playtime that is lots of fun. Her quilts are pure joy.

Someone who read the interview showed me classes she is teaching in Madeleine Island and I signed up right away. Like you, I would love to take a workshop with Gwen Marston. I think that most of the techniques we use in quilting today--even in the Modern Quilting movement--were pioneered by Gwen. And I have heard she is a wonderful teacher!

ReplyDeleteI've attended a workshop with Kaffe Fassett, which was a dream come true and one with the late great Patricia Campbell, which changed my needle turn applique forever. One other quilting hero is Ruth McDowell - I would loooove a workshop with her. And your scrap vortex quilt is quite simply monumental:)

I took a class from Cindy Needham and I'm dying to take another. She was wonderful. Also Melissa Corry, her quilts are so ingenious, they look challenging but she has ways to put them together so they flow. Thanks.

But in case you are busy teaching elsewhere I would love to take a longarm workshop from Angela Walters or a quilting workshop from Kathy Doughty of Material Obsession.
