scraps

sometimes i think that people who pass along their scraps to others are much smarter than me.
scraps can be overwhelming and time consuming.
(sometimes i wonder if i will ever touch my stash again???)
but then again, they can turn into such good things....
like super scrap happy quilts.
when i work on projects like this i remember all over again why i love scrap quilts so much!

i'm hoping to empty the bowl and basket and see how big the quilt ends up.
i'm predicting twin size.
(i hope it's not a king. although wouldn't that be fantastic?)

happy Monday to you!

  2. SO, SO, SO pretty. So, inquiring minds want to know...What is the smallest scrap you keep and what is the largest piece that goes into the scraps? I know you have probably mentioned this before, but I can't remember and I am too lazy to go look, LOL...

your scrap blocks are so bright and cheery!

  4. Those scrappy blocks look fantastic! My problem is that I think everything has to be a scrap..... Every little fiber gets saved. I found a solution, though: I call the "big" pieces (anything over two inch) simply fabric. So, I don't really have scraps! Unfortunately it does nothing to clean up the mess!

  5. Let's see....if you keep accepting scraps from others and then making those cute scrap quilts...no..you will never get to sew with your stash! But if you are happy, that is all that counts!!

  6. I just keep making more scraps, but I don't give them away, because I really, really, really want to be like you and create a bunch of lovely happy scrappies.

  7. Love the blocks. I was just looking at my out of control scrap basket (a giant laundry basket) and made a decision that after I'm finished my Christmas gift sewing, I'm going to do nothing but sew my scraps. I'll see how far into 2013 it will get me.

  11. I've always loved scrap quilts, and as a new quilter I'm looking forward to the day when I have enough scraps to make one of my very own. Yours is looking great!

  13. I wish I could give you my scraps! Unfortunately I think the shipping is out of my budget. I have been"cleaning" my sewing area and have 4 large bins of scraps of every size, style and color. It's a bit overwhelming!

  14. Amazing how those little scraps can be turned into something so nice. Di x

  15. LOL...I don't pass mine on but I don't do much with them. They are saved for "some day or something". I can't stand to cut them up because I might NEED them for something.

Scrappy makes YOU happy so I don't see a need to change anything.

  18. Oooh, looks like fun. Although, this looks much more tedious and time-consuming than your drano quilt!

  20. You make such order out of what looks like a pile of chaos. I like that little piece of fabric with the letters and numbers on it.

  24. Interesting perspective about the intelligence of those who pass along their scraps ;-) It's kind of like the be careful what you wish for syndrome....I asked my mom for her scraps from sewing children's dresses (didn't like the thought that they may be thrown away) and she has given me two large shopping bags so far and has more waiting! Let me know if you need any scraps...;-)

  26. I dare you to get rid of all your scraps and just make stuff from your stash.

  27. how about if there is a lot, do a scrappy back too. THAT WOULD BE WILD!! I would call that my happy quilt.

  28. I think your scraps rival my entire stash! Can't wait to see more of this quilt as it progresses.

  29. you are the scraps Queen! You have taught me to view scraps in a whole new way (and everytime I read your beautiful book again I find myself wishing I had MORE scraps!)

  30. The blocks are gorgeous! I love them. Scrap bowls tend to feel bottomless, don't they? Can't wait to see how it turns out.

  31. use it up, wear it out. i admire your patience.

  32. It is fantastic. I used to throw all my scraps away then you came along and showed me all the wonderfulness of scraps. I made several different scrappy quilts which were lovely, but they all kinda looked the same. So recently a few of us had a scrap trade and everything feels all new again. I'll have to send you a picture of my star quilt made with Pati's. It's amazing. Everyone has given me their tired scraps and Pati is becoming an amazing quilt. so far the only thing Ive purchased for her is some white background. Thank you so much for introducing me to hand piecing with Pati. It's been an amazing journey. If there were a fire, I'd grab Pati and run.

  33. You do beautiful work with your scraps. I just gave a bunch of my scraps to my niece who is beginning to show a love of sewing. I figured they would do her more good than sitting in my basement waiting for me to finish that ever elusive scrap quilt!

  34. simply marvellous!

  35. Wow! But I must finish Missing U first (rows are ready to be stitched together). Thank you for so much inspiration.

  36. Wonderful! Making something useful out of all those scraps is great. So bright and cheery. It will be grand for sure.

  37. You are "sew" inspirational! If I attack my scrap bins I could have a quilt big enough to cover the entire county!

    ReplyDelete
  38. It's kinda fun to just start piecing together without any mind to color and design and size and all the usual rules that you need to make a quilt come out looking like the pattern! Scrapiness at its best!

  39. Amanda it's like a candy shop, so yummy and fun. The strips definitely keep it from getting too messy but all the bright colors are truly a delight. Really lovely.

  40. My name is Jo and I too am addicted to scrap. I think my family is too. I asked my daughter what she wanted for a wedding quilt knowing I would sew whatever she wanted. She picked a maverick star quilt. PERFECT in my book....another chance to get scrap happy!!!

  41. Thanks for this post and especially the progress photo! It's motivating me to put a dent on my scrap piles... at current count, I have 7 large laundry baskets of them... ugh! =o(

  42. I'm loving those blocks, I can't even imagine giving away my scraps especially if I can use them like you're doing. Beautiful.

  43. Your book is a huge inspiration for me. I have started saving my scraps, and now I am impatient to get enough to actually DO something with them! I wish I could get people to send me their scraps instead of throwing them away, lol!

  44. Ooooh, very pretty- a king-size would be fabulous!!! =)

  45. p.s. I FINALLY broke down and cut my color-sorted scrap bins into strips (1.5 inch, 2 inch, and 2.5 inch) and squares (5inch, 4inch, and 4.5 inch). I've been hesitant for so long, but think now they'll actually get used! Heading to a quilt retreat soon and am so happy to take things already cut to sew.

  46. I love it! How do you start a project like that? Do you just sew the scraps together how they com in to square blocks? Ore is ther a pattern you ar using in this one? Love from holland!

  47. How fun! I agree, scrap quilts are the best.

  48. Maybe smarter at keeping their space clean (looking around my scrappy sewing area, not judging yours), but not at sewing awesomeness!

  49. so girly! I am going to throw the odd shapes out and cut into blocks and strips. Great idea!
