really random thursday

thanks for all the sweet comments in my last post. i should have mentioned that we are moving back to central MN. we have no idea where we will land specifically yet...still need to figure out that piece. my kids want to go house hunting in the worst way, but i am insistent that we start looking after ours is listed for sale.
i've been painting trim and doors for 7 days and boy am I cranky! there is still so much to do. i feel like i'm in painting purgatory.
last night after my kids went to bed and my husband was at work, i treated myself to some quilting time. (there has been so little quilting time lately, which is making me even more cranky.) this is my super scrap happy quilt. the top is still in several sections that i need to fit together, but i am really loving it! LOTS of time invested in this baby. it's a medium lap size now, so i might keep going and make it a bit bigger. (it's all constructed in slabs, as described in sunday morning quilts.)
i've all but emptied the bowl and bin of scraps that i designated for this project. hurray for progress!

just to clarify, i'm not running out of scraps. not even close! :)

on saturday i will be one of the featured artists on the river falls art crawl. i'll be doing a trunk show at riverside quilting in river falls. i'll also be doing a book signing and selling copies of the book...and perhaps some other goods, too. if you are in the area i'd love it if you would stop in and say hello! the hours are 10am-4pm.
last saturday i went to a quilt show in hastings, mn. 300 quilts were displayed in the sanctuary of St. Luke's. it was absolutely beautiful. both vintage and new quilts were draped over the back of all the pews. it was spectacular.
hands down my favorite quilt at the show was made by Ann Mayhew. it was made of pinwheels and shoo fly blocks that finished at 1.5"! it was absolutely stunning.
it was made from all solids, which i loved. it had a total of 23,808 pieces. wowza. it only took her 3 years! i must meet this woman someday.

i'm linking up with Cindy's really random thursday.

  1. I'm sorry you are in painting purgatory! It's so different when you are painting to sell instead of painting to keep. :(. That vintage quilt is amazing!

  2. ohh.....and painting trim is the least fun! But it will be exciting once you start looking at new places.
I love your happy scrappy quilt! Glad it put a smile on your face.

  3. Oh my I am feeling your painting pain. I just did my bedroom last weekend and was not a happy camper. Now that it's done it just shows that the rest of the house really needs it too!
I hope everything will go smoothly (or as smooth as possible) where moving is concerned! :)
I just received a copy of my quilt guilds newsletter and was thrilled to see you are our guest speaker in May!! I will cross my fingers, eyes and legs that nothing messes up the schedule for you. ;)
I have Sunday Morning Quilts and have been thumbing through it (again) to see what I should make first!
As I know you can relate--I should finish some of the other projects I have, but that doesn't seem to be the way it goes!
OH and what a fabulous venue for a quilt show-in a church like that!! beautiful.

  4. Your Super Happy Scrappy Quilt looks like the best quilt therapy ever! And, there is something about quilts draped over church pews that is just lovely.

  5. If you need more scraps, I'm over-full in my bins! Let me know. I can smash a ton into a flat rate box.

  6. That is a happy quilt. I really love it!

You are right, painting for 7 days is torture!

  7. The quilts over the pews was really beautiful to see. When my mother passed, we put all of the 12 grandchildren's quilts she had made for them, over the pews in the back of the sanctuary. It was wonderful. Lots of happy memories. BTW I totally hate to paint. I am so sorry for you. Hope you get out of purgatory soon.

  10. Awwww.......Minnesota? Too bad you aren't moving south! Not too far south....just enough for us to be closer. Love your scrappy quilt!

  11. Love that scrappy quilt, and I wish I was close enough to come help you paint - it's one of my favorite things to do. I left a comment on your earlier post telling you about a brush I use that makes it a lot more fun.

And am I reading right, those blocks are 1.5" square? Oh my gosh - that's insane!! But absolutely gorgeous!! I understand why it was your favorite....

  12. I am not allowed to paint anymore after I fell off a stepstool, and the paint can went flying. We had to replace the carpet and quickly wipe off the paint spatters from the furniture. Now my DH lets me hire someone!

    Love your scrap quilt!

  18. Oh good! Central MN? Does that mean you will do classes in Duluth maybe or near? I would be thrilled! My sister's house is for sale but we are south of Duluth, so maybe too far.

  19. I beg your pardon... did you say the blocks in that last quilt finished at one and a half inches? That is absolutly crazy. Crazy I tell you! But what a lovely place to have a quilt show. And your scrap happy quilt is looking awesome! Very scrappy and very happy. :)

  20. Hey, we'll take you here in MN. Maybe I'll actually be able to come to one of your retreats if you do them here. And I could probably get Emily to come too.

  24. Good luck with the painting. I feel for you. We are redecorating our bedroom next week so I'll be in painting purgatory too. The must be something about the threat of that having an effect on my quilting as I've quilted 4 quilts this week like I'll never see the light of my sewing machine again :-)
I love your scrappy quilt... There is something really special about it.

  25. AJ that super scrap happy quilt is amazing! You have me wanting to dump my scrap bin ASAP. And anywhere in MN is grand, I was born & raised there and miss it every day. Good luck.

  26. Your scrappy quilt looks fabulous! The church filled with quilts is so beautiful, a nice break from painting :)

  27. I've been in the preparing house for market mode..YUK! It is just like remodeling..once a person fixes one thing everything else looks bad so it has a terrible snowballing effect!! Thankfully the kids sound like they are on board. Prepare yourself..we looked at a house the other day and there was no room for a sewing room. Once I pointed that out to hubby he suddenly realized we wouldn't be buying that house!

  28. I mostly like to paint, but not for extended periods like you are having to do! Your scrap happy quilt is stunning. And all those quilts draped over pews is just amazing. Wish I could come see you at the art crawl...

  29. Love your scrappy quilt in progress.
Hate that you have tospend so much time painting. Ugh
Good luck with the house sale and move.
Once I get some work stuff finished I am going to be doing some slabs and see if I can let go and be really scrappy.

  31. Just wanted to mention... the house next door to us just went on the market today. They had it up for about a year and a half, then took it off. Went back up today... How crazy would that be.. LOL Nice house, 4 bedrooms I think. Nice yard... Good neighbors... ;)

  32. Your scrap quilt is beautiful! Very happy indeed!

  33. I felt really happy that I HAD enough scraps finally (but only in one colour) to make a yellow box! From SMQ of course!

  34. I am sorry I missed the quilt show in Hasting. I live in Red Wing, so it is very close to me! That picture of the church is how I want the church to look like at my funeral. I want everyone I have made quilts for to bring them to my funeral, and drape the pews with them, instead of sending flowers. I hope the house selling and moving process goes smoothly. Welcome back to MN!

  35. Love the quilt! Please keep us updated on where you land here in MN! If you do classes somewhere, I would love to know about it.

  36. Good luck with all the painting. I love that quilt you saw at the show, too! What a fantastic way to show quilts!
