If you've been reading this blog for awhile, you know that I love to support Margaret's Hope Chest and the work that they do. I'm happy to be teaming up with Carin once again. I wrote up a tutorial for a very easy ragged square block, which can be found here. Would you be willing to make a block (or several) and mail them to Margaret's Hope Chest? Then, on the weekend of August 25th, we are planning a sewing party where we, along with several West Michigan quilters, will be assembling the blocks into quilt tops. (More specific details to come.) I'd love to have them flooded with quilt blocks so we will be busy all weekend!
Just a few things....
Please make your quilt blocks monochromatic as stated in the tutorial.
The deadline for this project has been extended and is now July 31, 2012.
This would be a great way to use up some stash for a great cause. If you have any questions, please let me know. Thanks in advance!
I will see what I can do! So, does this mean you'll be IN West Michigan????
ReplyDeleteSounds like fun! I might do a few. I just sent off my Wrapped in Hope quilt a week ago. I did some blocks for the Wrapped in Hope bee last year, too. It was fun to see how Carin put all of them together. It was fun to see the others share their blocks on the flickr group, too.
ReplyDeletehow do the blocks stay unraveled,,,do you just cut off the ragged edges when and after it is washed, i just don't get this part???????? JUST wondering,
ReplyDeleteI'd love to help. I understand monochromatic, but can we use children's fabric in mono? I have blue boy dirt bike fabric that needs a good home...thank you for extending the deadline.
ReplyDeleteBoppiesgirl@gmail.com
Jo, I'm pretty sure using the dirt bike fabric would be just fine.

Florence,
ReplyDeleteThe raw edges will fray after washing. There will be a few strings that need trimming at that point, but these quilts wear beautifully and get softer and quite cozy with use. There is a ragged squares quilt tutorial that I posted that will explain it in more detail. Hope that helps!

This sounds like fun! I've actually been in Grand Rapids for the past month and wanted to make a kids quilt for their prison project, but I don't have enough tools with me to make one. Hoping I can whip out a quick one when I get home before their deadline for their visit, but it would have been nice not to have to mail it. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try to make a few too. worthy cause...thanks so much for all your ideas too...
ReplyDeleteSilly question but I am assuming that even though I am in the UK I could get involved??
ReplyDeleteWhat an inspiration you girls are. Well done to everybody...I will try and get some blocks done next week and send them over....from Oz it would take about a week to get there...hugs Khris
ReplyDeleteThis is so awesome! I will seriously try to do this. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteYes, I will make a few blocks!
ReplyDeleteI'm goping to put this on my diary :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm a new quilter, and am up in Canada, but I take this as a challenge to practice and get some blocks to Margaret's Hope Chest :) This will be my first interaction with the quilting community and I look forward to it!
ReplyDeleteI'll try and make a few! I have tons of purple fabric that I feel like I'll never use ;)
ReplyDeleteSure I can help. I think of it as a little thank you for all your free patterns and inspiration you have so generously given us.
ReplyDeleteHappy Sewing
yay! this will be fun. :)
ReplyDeleteWould you be interested in an almost complete quilt top? The blocks are not monochromatic, but a red/tan/blue mix, they are sewn into rows, and the rows need sewing together. I'm just not loving it and it will probably languish in my UFO pile forever. Please let me know if you would want it, and I can mail it to you. Thanks.

I'd love to send some blocks. Thanks for the tute. What a wonderful quick pattern. I'm going to keep it in mind for charity local quilts.
ReplyDeleteFor this block, does it matter if the fabric is pre-washed? I'm generally not a pre-washer, but I didn't know if it might matter with these. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWhereabouts in Michigan will this be? I will be on holiday north of Traverse City and would love to help.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Germany!
I will send a few! Not sure of colors yet....thinking blue.
ReplyDeleteSounds like fun. I will make blue, purple and grey. Grey might be a change for values but I have some nice greys. I will get going and send them off.
ReplyDeleteOoh! Would love to help put them together! I think the renters leave the cottage that weekend, so I might be in town! Send details!
ReplyDeleteI would love to help, will start cutting out some squares today :)
ReplyDeleteCount me in. I'm mid organizing my stash by color. Great time for this request to pop up.
ReplyDeleteWow what a fun block...I made 4 in about 30 minutes....they are on the way :0), I even blogged about it to see if I can reach anyone else who will help. What a nice thing to do :0)

ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a nice, quick break from the 90 stripped blocks I've working on!
ReplyDeleteI´ll make some, don´t know yet the colors.
ReplyDeleteI need to make some blocks...though my sewing students yesterday made a dent in my scraps.
ReplyDeleteCount me in for at least a few. Smiles~Beth
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. I'll get a few there before the deadline.
ReplyDeleteDo we need to let you know if we are planning on sending you some blocks? I am going to make it a priority and see what I can do.
ReplyDeletecount me in, I would love to make several for you
ReplyDeleteI'll be making and sending a dozen. Thanks for the excuse to sew for such a good cause, and to clean out my stash a little. :)
ReplyDeleteMine have been made and are just waiting to be sent. In the mail tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteOh, I will make some.. not sure on colors.. stash is limited, and I am planning on coming in that weekend to help! Need more details on that... where are you staying sista? miss ya!
ReplyDeleteIf I am reading the colour count correct grey is needed? In any case It is likely what I will send, unless you object onc eI get cracking on the blocks I will also blog about it, must be some other Ontario, or Canadian, quilters that will get involved, and the blocks seem super simple. Thanks for the heads up!
ReplyDeleteBooks_Bound,
ReplyDeleteno, i don't think the fabric will need to be pre-washed. i'm not pre-washing mine.

Kelli H,
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! Your help from the UK would be much appreciated.
aj
Dorothee,
ReplyDeleteIt will be in Grand Rapids. I hope you can join us!
aj
Texas JennyWren,
ReplyDeleteNo, you don't have to let me know. if you get around to making them and popping them in the mail to MHC, that would be wonderful. Thanks so much!
aj
Nicole,
ReplyDeleteYes, it looks like grey is in the colours needed. I'm glad you asked...i didn't realize it was included before. :)
thanks in advance for your help and for spreading the word!

I've got my squares sent in. As I live in Grand Rapids, I'm really looking forward to the sew-in. I had such a wonderful time at the last one!!
ReplyDeleteI would be delighted to make a few blocks. What a great project!!
ReplyDeleteDonna in Michigan
I definitely have some stash that I will be able to use. I'm happy to help support this great cause...I'm hoping to have some quilt tops and hopefully a couple of completed quilt tops too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute block for a great cause. I think I can surely find a few minutes to sew up some of these. I love that you put your energy to supporting good causes!
ReplyDeleteI love that block. It is my friendship block from my quilt group. I asked them to use their favorite fabrics in one color. They sure had a hard time sticking with one color. I have it in top form and plan to machine quilt it, following your tutorial, next month. It's a fun and easy block. I will send...
ReplyDeleteI'm "in". Any color y'all are "light" on?
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Count me in! I'll actually make some at our retreat and give them to you then.
ReplyDeleteAt least 6 blocks on their way!
