I finished Tammy's mini quilt yesterday. In the end, I used layout A, which got the most votes. I love how this little quilt came out. I sure hope Tammy likes it, too. Isn't it so fun to see what you can make from scraps? I NEVER tire of seeing the results. Never, ever!
To quilt it, I stitched next to the zig zags with my walking foot. It looked a little plain, so I added the swirly quilting to the white spaces. I like the swirls a lot!
I used more scraps for the back and some flea market fancy for the binding. I love the back as much as the front! Instead of adding a label, I just wrote right on the back. A little risky, but it turned out ok. It measures 14" x 19".

I also got my mini quilt from Shelly last week, the other half of the batik challenge. I challenged her to use white in a quilt. She didn't even have any in her stash! Yikes! (Sorry, Shelly. I couldn't resist one last jab. ;) )
She did some fancy pants quilting on it, which is so much fun!

And of course she made a pieced back, as she always does.
Thanks so much Shelly! I love this mini! It's going to go great in my craft room.

I had so much fun with these scrap challenges that I'm going to open it up for round two. If there is anyone out there who would like me to make a mini for you from your scraps, leave me a comment letting me know what kind of scraps you would send me if you are chosen or how you would like to challenge me. Instead of using a random number generator, I'll pick based on the comments this time.

I'd love a piece that you would consider your "signature" quilting style. I have lots of bright scraps.
ReplyDeleteI would definitely give you some SOCK MONKEY scraps. Heathered looking scraps, bananas, monkeys, polka dots, YUM!
ReplyDeleteI have them left from a quilt for my oldest daughter for Christmas last year and my youngest (also the only boy) wants one too...a mini quilt would be awesome for him. Especially since he's recently adopted my youngest daughter's American Girl Twin BOY doll...but it's NOT A DOLL according to him. He's just Luke.
I think it would be interesting if you made a mini based on one of your quiltalongs - just size it small! I have a storage cube FULL of scraps that are calling your name... Amanda Jean...do you HEAR me?? Bonus - you can keep the extras, they definitely want to live with someone who won't stuff them into a cube for perpetuity!
ReplyDeleteHaha, Michelle you are funny.
ReplyDeleteI would send you scraps of fabric by artist Debbie Taylor-Kerman who in my opinion is one of the most interesting fabric designers around who doesn't get much press in the quilting world. Love her fabric.
Your two challenge quilts are both really great!
Hmmmm. . . I have so many scraps. . . some Jennifer Paganelli. . . I would absolutely love to see the ticker tape quilt done with triangles. . .or maybe a quilt made with KNIT scraps! Oh! THAT would be fun-- and a challenge!
ReplyDeleteI love Shelly's little WHITE quilt! SO much fun! It was fun to watch you to work that one out...
ReplyDeleteI would have said Batiks challenge... But I think I already gave you batiks, as did shelly!
I'd say a challenge of random blocks and you have to make them all work together in one quilt...
What fun it would be to own one of your mini's Amanda! I would send you scraps from my Hope Valley Bricks and Stones because I would like to have a small quilt with the same fabric but much different on the wall next to where the quilt is on the sofa. Since you saw my Bricks and Stones in person, you know what it looks like (or you can check my blog).
ReplyDeleteOo! I have an idea:
ReplyDeleteI'd love a mini to hang on the wall that somehow conveys the meaning of the song "You Are My Sunshine". It's a special song to me. I have Irish Twins, and it's the song I have sung to them every night since they were born - sometimes with both snuggled in my lap in the rocker. But just these past few weeks, both have said that they don't need MommaBear to sing to them anymore, that they're all grown up. I've cried everynight since...
Hmmm, I think I would send you some castle peeps scraps! I adore everything you make, and would love to see what you would create out of the bold bright prints/ peeps!
ReplyDeleteI would send you my Soiree scraps. I've been a quilter for years - but life made me put it on the back burner for a while. Your blog gave me some much needed inspiration! Quilting is now my therapy for this crazy life! Anyhow - the first quilt I did after getting inspired by you was a stacked coins quilt with Soiree. I love it!
ReplyDeleteI love how your scrap challenge mini turned out for Tammy! Love that quilting in the white, which looks cool on the back too. Well done! I have a basket full of Sis Boom strips that I would love to have made into some kind of beachy look to put on our night stands. (nice to dream about the beach in January in Wisconsin)
ReplyDeletei love all of your quilts, amandajean, and would be delighted to have ANYTHING made by you to call my own! i am a self-taught quilter and work on an almost non-existent budget which means i almost never purchase material. hence my scraps would be pieces from used clothing, vintage sheets and some leftovers of the quilts i've made.
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda Jean! I would LOVE, love, love a mini quilt from you! I was thinking of sending you some non cotton fabrics. OMANI fabrics! My daughter just said it would be hard for you to work with but you would figure out that a stabilizer would be your friend! Ooohhh! Pick me, Pick me!!
ReplyDeleteBoth quilts are cute! Lucky you to have one of Shelly's creations! I have about a zillion triangles of different sizes that I keep thinking I will do something with... You have such a strong sense of geometry in your quilts that I would love to see what they inspired you to create! Triangles always inspire me to think in 3's- not just *yes* or *no*, but *both* as well. They are the shape of possibilities. Happy sewing!
ReplyDeleteI never would have predicted how nice that scrap quilt would turn out...but considering your past projects, I guess I should have! :)
ReplyDeleteOops...I would send you my pretty red and yellow Pop Garden scraps, along with a bits and pieces of white muslin. Tempting?
ReplyDelete...but if you choose me, you have to send me some scraps in return, so I can make you something too. :)
Oh boy, I would be so honored if you used my scraps! I would send the colors I thought would work for fall. :o) And it would mean the world to have you sign the back!! :o) So personal and would be a sentimental piece for sure! :o)
ReplyDeleteI adore Tammy's quilt. Both are gorgeous but something about hers just tugs at my heart! :o)
Have a great week.
Sincerely ~ Tricia
Your scrap challenge turned out super. How about a challenge with civil war reproduction prints..a "no white" version. I always love seeing what you are making and would love to see what you come up with...a "modern twist" on "civil war-ies". P.S. love the hexie needle case. It's on my list of have to makes.
ReplyDeleteI have lots of Japanese fabric scraps that I would love to see what you can do with :D
ReplyDeleteMy scraps are so random it's ridiculous! I've got pieces of old clothes, pretty modern stuff, solids, old stuff from my grandma's basement and pretty much everything else in between. It would be so fun to see a modern table runner made out of the scraps!
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda Jean. I have a bunch of i spy scraps that I would love to see you use. I typically make a charm style quilt with them and I have made a version modeled after your ticker tape quilt.

ReplyDeleteI love your mini quilt! The swirls in the white were the perfect touch.
ReplyDeleteOh those scrappies are cute! Love your quilting on that zig-zag quilt and Wahoo! Shelly used White!
ReplyDeleteHoney, don't know if these qualify as scraps since I haven't made anything with them yet myself...but the biggest challenge I have in my fabric bin is a group of funky cotton prints from Africa a friend brought me earlier this year. Some of them are just awesome! Can guarantee you haven't sewn with these before. :)
p.s. love the comment above by a woman who said she has been inspired by you to bring quilting back into her life as therapy. Being an inspiration by being you. Love it! Think I need a bit of quilting therapy myself tonight. Ciao!
Honey, I got news for you! Those cute little quilts are the same size you'd have to do for the doll swap and you didn't want to do that. How come? You do "little" so well too!
ReplyDeleteoh i would definitely send you a package of vintage scraps. i never walk away from a vintage fabric and now i have loads of floral vintage fabrics that leave me clueless. what to do with them? how do they fit into my quilting style. would love to see what you make of them!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Andrea, the little collector on this one...I have some small pieces of Japanese hankies that were given to me as parting gifts when I was leaving Japan last year. I lived there 2 years teaching English. I'd love to have a "scrap book" mini made out of those fabrics. One was given to me by a 9 year old boy that has cute Japanese sandals on it. Another is a reversible piece of crinkly silk (I think?) with pumpkin orange and geometric shapes in white on one side and matcha green with sprinkled dots of white on the other. Sounds like a fun challenge to me! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat great little quilts - fabulous! If you made a quilt from my scraps - I would send fussy cuts of Heather Ross and some red and aqua bits to go with (and a bribe of your choosing - hee!). :)
ReplyDeleteYour little quilt is just gorgeous! I have such a wide variety of scraps, most of which I can't identify, but something I would definitely include are some whitework and cutwork pieces my grandmother saved from from vintage clothing over the years. She cut these beautiful strips out of clothing, and I've been looking for just the right project to put them into.
ReplyDeletegreat mini-quilt!! i love polka dots, but have a hard time incorporating more than one into any design, so i'd send you a boatload of polka dot prints and see what you came up with! i think it's a great idea! :)!
ReplyDeletebess
I have noticed that you rarely if ever use flannel. I would challenge you to use flannel.
ReplyDeleteI'm another new quilter who finds your work inspiring, and quilting therapeutic. I received two bags of cotton Hawaiian shirts from a co-worker whose husband wore them to work in a previous job. She got closet space, and I cut up the shirts into lots of fabric. I've been experimenting with it, and I'd love to see what you would do with it!
ReplyDeleteDitto! that is a wonderful little quilt. I missed the layout options (but went to look) and this one would have definitely received my vote.
ReplyDeleteWell I would be happy to send you fabric to make me one of your original quilts (I just want you to have fun making it) and yes it would be reproduction fabrics, my personal favorite
ReplyDeleteif you want 1 1/2" squares I will send you hundreds! if you want 4" squares I will send you those
if you want strips I could send you those too! I am working on a wall of little quilts so it would be an honor to have one of yours hanging on my wall of little quilts
thanks
Kathie
It is sooo beautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteI'd send scraps of Anna Maria's Little Folks line. I just made a quilt and have some leftovers that I'm not sure what to do with.
ReplyDeleteThe voile sews nicely but is a little shiftly; I'm not sure if I feel up the the challenge of trying someting smaller with more pieces....maybe you do?? ;)
I know you can make a beautiful quilt of out pretty, designer fabric. What if I sent you some older, mismatched fabric? I was the benefactor of both my grandma and mom whittling down their stashes this summer, and have some of their "interesting " scraps around here. They are special to me because of where they come from, but not necessarily beautiful. So, I would send you an envelope of those scraps, and challenge you to make something interesting and scrappy out of them. I think that is a great challenge and stretch beyond typical fabric choices.
ReplyDeleteYour zig zag quilt is beautiful - I love how you quilted it especially. It has been fun to watch this challenge and your design process, so thanks for sharing and for doing it again!
Hi AmandaJean,
ReplyDeleteMy challenge to you would be to use the fabrics I send.
You see, I have brights, darks, dulls, repro's (1930's & Civil War), large prints, small prints, fruit, birds, animals, etc.
Trying to get all these types of fabrics to "play nice" would indeed be a challenge.
Have a great day,
Sherry V.
I think my scraps would really be a challenge. Most of them are strips - maybe 2 inches (ish). They are mostly from my first couple quilts and are calico prints. Some of them are really not very pretty. I would love to see how you can take a pretty boring and not the prettiest group of scrap strips and make something lovely out of them. My creativity in this area is severely lacking.
ReplyDeleteOh, I have an awesome little stash of sweetwater scraps(authentic and make life) that would make a great little swap quilt.
ReplyDeletePS. Thank you for doing a round two. You really are very generous!
This would be so fun and I would love to create something for you too....I would send scraps from my recent post 'a whole lot of color going on" I had crazy fun working with solids and brights in the red, orange, yellow and greens. I am a newbie in the blogworld and have been inspired by you many times.
ReplyDeletei love scraps and keep SO many.. my husband is puzzled by this and tells me to toss them! i usually give him a shocked and bad look! lol
ReplyDeletei LOVE bright fun colors. I have a few ikea fabrics, boy fabrics (i have a 3yr old boy)vintage sheets and pillow cases, old jeans etc. we are on a budget :) i also have some fun bright plaid that needs some lovin!!
i love crazy quilts and i also LOVE the E. option in the last scraps challenge with Tammy's scraps, that was my FAV!! i also LOVE hexagons!! always wanted to quilt in hexagons but never been brave enough!!
What a fun challenge. I would probably ask for a mini around the theme "transitions," and send you scraps in two colors. Hm, maybe reds and browns and HR mushrooms.
ReplyDeleteI have a bunch of Halloween scraps leftover from a quilt I recently made. Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday, so I can never get enough Halloween décor in my house. (Yes I will admit I do have many Halloween items up year round!) I have a few fabrics I purchased for the quilt that never really fit with the scheme, so I’d love to see what you could do with those!
ReplyDeleteRachel
Oh, these mini quilts are awesome! All that scrappy goodness. sigh.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun to do a scrap swap and make! Wouldn't it be great to organize something like this on a larger scale?
Hey Amanda, I'm glad you like it! In your picture the white looks really white, at my house it looked pink. I guess because I quilted it with pink thread. It was a lot of fun and I look forward to sewing with you again. Take care my friend and happy sewing!
ReplyDeleteLove the mini quilt design you came up with! If you picked me for the next round I owuld send civil war scraps as I have them pouring out of every storage bin in my sewing room. I love the historical background of civil war fabrics and have made many quilts from patterns in that era. It would be neat to see a different spin on a quilt design using civil war scraps...maybe a more modern twist?!? Thanks for the opportunity! Kim Nielsen
ReplyDeleteSo I've come across your blog before and remembered some of your work. I am trying to start a baby quilt and needed some inspiration, so last night I googled 'filmstrip quilt' and found your blog again. Needless to say I am now inspired - more like obsessed - and have many projects added to my list. (Baby quilt comes first, baby quilt comes first!)
ReplyDeleteI was reading through the archives and found your post about favorite ice cream. Coffee with brownie is my go-to at Cold Stone Creamery. Yum! I think I need some ice cream now! I love small coincidences like that.
Anyway, even though it wasn't my original reason for wanting to comment, a mini scrap quilt would be awesome!
I really like your zig-zag scrap quilt! I like the swirly quilting in the white part. Both of these little quilts are nice! :)
ReplyDeleteI started quilting eight years ago while waiting for my daughter to come home to us,making her a 100 wishes quilt from scraps donated by friends and family. Each scrap has a story and each indicates the persons wishes for a beautiful life. She still drags that little quilt around for playing house, or picnics or what have yo... since then I've made many, many baby quilts for those expectant parents via birth or adoption... I have tons of brightly colored kid fun scraps that I'd love to see assembled into a 1000 wishes quilt! The wishes I've bestowed on the children of the world.
ReplyDeleteThe zigzag is so pretty. I've given my idea a lot of thought.
ReplyDeleteI think you do sweet VERY well. Because of that, I would send you some precious scraps of fabrics I put together from my babies' lovely worn items that remind me of the Worn and Washed type fabrics.
http://www.wornandwashedfabrics.com/
A guild member had a bundle of these her stewardess friend had brought over, and they were so sweet. I think my little bits saved for memories are similarly sweet.
I WOULD love to win.
Lucy~
With 9-11 a few days away, my scrap challenge for you would be to come up with something patriotic. I would send you some blue scraps...my favorite color!
ReplyDeleteOk...so I only lasted 2 days before I HAD to look! I love it! The swirls add the perfect accent. Thank you so much! I can't wait to hang this on my wall!
ReplyDeleteI didn't have any specifics in my previous post, but I thought of a project - how about earth tones and reds leftover from my 'Grand Canyon' quilt? There are lots of strips and little triangles, mostly still sewed together and waiting to be transformed. I would love to have my own little reminder of this quilt, which was a huge project for me!
ReplyDeleteI love your scrappy "little quilt"...and your big one too.
ReplyDeleteShari in AZ
I won't send you scraps--just want to comment on the a-dor-a-ble mini zig zag--Squeal! and the cute Mini exchange. How fun to have both in your possession :) Also your finished quiltalong quilt is looking terrific. Good work, Quilter!
ReplyDeleteI would send six months worth of scraps I have built up. Six month's worth because that is how long I have been quilting. You wouldn't think I would have many scraps because of the short time I've been quilting, but you would be wrong, very very wrong. I also would love to see your handy work up close. The only information I've had to learn to quilt has been from reading your blog, and you've been a great teacher!
ReplyDeleteI would love to send you some of my Liberty tana lawn scraps - I've amassed far too many over the years as I love the feel of tana lawn and it's great to quilt! My challenge would be for you to make something with triangles and maybe a little hand quilting! If I'm lucky enough to win I would love to make a quilt from your scraps in return - this would be a challenge for me. Your blog has been a great inspiration to me and encouraged by my daughter I am about to start my own - thank you!
ReplyDeleteAnnie
Maybe your son would like a My Sibling or My Pal BOY doll. Please visit www.mysiblingdolls.com. Our program benefits teens and adults with developmental disabilities. I design all the doll clothing and accessories, and they are made in the USA.
ReplyDeleteI would like to see a Dr. Suess inspired mini, lots of obscure angles, shapes, spirals, colors, and stripes. It would probably end up looking similar to a Geeze Wiz quilt, but even a little more out of control. In order to challenge you, my dear, it has to be out of control. And as far as material goes, I already supply you with plenty of scraps.
ReplyDeleteI love the quilting on the zig-zag quilt! I used this pattern for the quilt I entered in the fair this year, just haven't blogged about it yet. I love your style, will be fun to see what else you come up with. My scrap-bins are exploding, I'd be happy to send you as many as needed.
ReplyDeleteI love the swirls in the white parts of our zig zag quilt - I am just learning to free motion and that has given me great inspiration - I find stippling too hard as a beginner, maybe that's because I'm just not that into it!
ReplyDeleteThe challenge? For me it would be pink 1930's strips - I have a load of them cut up to make a mini log cabin quilt but never seem to get to it - other things take my fancy and before I know it, years have passed. So, in the interest of progressing a WIP, I would challenge you to pink 1930's...
Since the topic was scraps, thought I'd share what I made most recently with my scraps. I stumbled on a tutorial for a crazy 9 patch and dug through and found enough pinks to use for this. Even the white was all from my scraps.

It's now sitting on my pile waiting for a binding.
http://quiltingsquareone.blogspot.com/2010/07/on-recent-trip-to-visit-my-sisters-in.html We want to thankyou for the great zizag quilt tutorial.Pam, two sisters and 3 friends.
ReplyDeleteScrap challenge looks like a lot of fun and boy do I have a lot of scraps! I would love to share.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy your blog. Thanks to you I got brave enough to start free motion quilting.
