the tide is high/lazy summer days

These two quilts were finished much earlier in the year. I have to blog about them before the end of the year so I can link to the quilts on the list in my sidebar, and so I can include them in my end of the year flickr mosaic. :)

Both quilts are the same pattern but in different colorways. I wrote this pattern as a mystery quilt along for Sew Hip Magazine.

This one is called the Tide Is High. (Thanks, Susan, for the perfect name.) This was the quilt I made as I was designing the pattern.
Heather contributed many blue and green scraps to the cause. I changed the binding colors to match the color blocks on the front of the quilt. The back is the solid dark blue you see peeking out. I am beginning to really like solid color backs on my quilts. I stippled it, of course. I have this one hanging on the end of my bed and it coordinates quite nicely with my bento box quilt. Love that.
This one is called Lazy Summer Days. This is the quilt I made to test the pattern for accuracy.
I apologize for the poor quality photos...I quick snapped them back in May before I shipped the quilt off to England. I was hoping to do a side by side comparison of the quilts, but this one isn't back in my possession yet.
I love the soft colors of this quilt so much.
Again, I stippled it and used 3 different colors of binding.
The backing fabric looks like it was made especially for this quilt. I found it for half price at my LQS and that was a happy day. :)

Both quilts measure 60" x 72". Perfect lap sized quilts.

My thoughts on pattern writing? It's really, really hard work. I admire those who do it repeatedly. :)

  1. OH my God!!! I loved this quilt in the magazine! Can't believe I never realised you were the one who did it!!

Really sad though I lent the magazine with the fabric requirements to a friend! She has never given it back dispite many times having asked for it!
Love the tide is high, the colours work soooo well together!

  21. Gorgeous quilts! They are each beautiful in their different colourways... I tried to order all the magazines for the pattern online but couldn't find every issue. Will you be publishing it seperately at a later date?

    Happy New Year.

  23. Another perfect example of your gorgeous quilts!!

I want to put the pictures of the quilts as my screen-saver just to drool over them - I mean be inspired!

Thanks so much for sharing; you inspire and encourage me to just jump in and start a quilt already!!

    Enjoy your holidays!!

  24. Love that 3 different colors of binding. Very free I'm thinking. Your "Tide is High" is fantastic. A lot of fun and great for the stash. Superb. "Lazy Summer Days" makes me spring (as in the movement) and think about some nice warm sun. Yes, delightful.

  25. Your quilts are absolutely gorgeous (as usual) and I particularly love the changes of colour. I agree about the whole pattern writing thing and have this year's Christmas quilt still to do! It does get easier though as you find you have to say pretty much the same thing a lot of the time. I have also just finished designing and making a new quilt for my brother - no photos yet as he has gone away on holidays and I forgot to take them before he left! It looks as if it is constructed the same way yours is in three sections. Better write that one up at some point too!

  26. I really, really like the tide is high quilt! Love the use of color. The lighter quilt is good too--reminds me of those summer days when the colors are all muted by the heat and sun--perfect for lying on under a tree reading a book with a big glass of iced tea! Hope you had a great Christmas! Ours was good!

  27. Even making a quilt seems daunting, let along writing the pattern as well.
You are an amazing person !

  28. Oh my. Both are beautiful. I hope you get the quilt back soon. At least in time for springy weather.

  29. They look great!
I can't even imagine how you wrote a pattern for that!

  30. Both quilts are so lovely.

    P.S. Amandajean...you are a machine.

  31. Seriously...Amanda Jean, you need to print your patterns and sell them on ETSY for those of us that can't/don't buy/have access to, that mazagine. Your stuff is amazing!

  32. I admire your ability to think outside the box. Can't wait to see what you will do next!

  38. I love how you showed the pattern can work in two such different colorways--that's great for folks who have trouble imagining "their" stash with "your" pattern. Pattern writing may be difficult, but think of the minds you may have opened to the wonderful world of quilting with those quilts!! Great Job, Amanda!! Afterall, the more quilters there are, the more pieceful the world will be!

  40. Amandjean, Thanks for your challenge with the Zig-Zag quilt earlier this year. I just finished mine, and called it the Black & White Challenge at the same time.

Twin size, I can give it to some boy who needs a quilt in his life.

  42. I just wanted to take the chance to say, thanks for posting all your projects and creativity. I'm a "momma that loves to quilt" too, but sometimes the day is so chaotic that I don't get to actually touch my projects. But, after the kids are in bed and I have a few moments of peace, I can always refill my soul with the beautiful pictures and new ideas on your blog. Thanks!

I love the beach and I think I'm going to have to take a stab at one similar to your Tide is High, quilt - if I may.

  43. "the tide is high turned out wondeful". What magazine/issue do I need to get the pattern?

  45. Both quilts are tremendous. I know all about pattern writing, not my favourite thing to do. I can't wait to see your mosaic, it's going to be fabulous. I hope next year is just as productive for you and inspirational for us as it has been this year.

  52. Amanda,
I have been looking for a certain piece of blue fabric for years, and I think I just found it in your quilt! It's on the of the bindings for your tide quilt. Do you have any scraps? I only need a fraction of a yard. Please email if you do!
