spare change
This is a coin quilt that I made with the leftovers from the filmstrip quilt. The fabric is Nouveau from Moda. I used an IKEA sheet for the sashing. Sheets are perfect for a quilt like this because you need long pieces, so if you cut it right, no piecing strips! It's so handy. I do love the way the sheets shrink up and crinkle, too. Although if you are making a bed sized quilt, it works well if you remember to add a few inches to the overall size ahead of time. Don't ask me how I know. :)
For the back, I used half of a duvet cover, also from IKEA. Yes, I'm a junkie! Isn't that a great pattern? The best part is I still have the other half of the duvet for another quilt back.
I love this fabric as binding, especially next to the white outside borders. I think it finishes off the quilt quite nicely.
The final quilt measures 50" x 67".
For some reason, I always forget that I do not like piecing coin quilts. I think because of the pieced strips, there is so much room for error (I do not have a perfect 1/4" seam allowance) and the length gets quite stretchy. I always do love the results, though.
A side note, today is grey, grey, grey, which makes photographing quilts quite a pain. But today, for the first time, I edited my photo in picnik. (though flickr.) What a nice discover that was! I know, I'm probably the last one to try it, but woo-hoo! I finally did. :)
Oh, and one more thing, in case you didn't see, there is a little tutorial for the ticker tape quilt here.
Another beautiful quilt! I love your backing, very cute!
ReplyDeleteOh love the results!! I need to steal that IKEA idea - you must be saving so much $$!
ReplyDeleteI love it!
ReplyDeleteNo, you were not the last. I am! Thanks for the info!!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
KT
Yeah, Ikea is awesome. Bring the kids to the play place for an hour and browse the textiles for an hour!
ReplyDeleteThey have great linens and fabric there for reasonable prices.. a great way to cut costs in quilting!
thanks for sharing. It's a beautiful quilt!
i love it!!!! and i love the idea to use old or new sheets or duvets too!
ReplyDeleteSnap! I have that exact same duvet cover from Ikea, and I also bought it for the purpose of some quilty project! (Great minds huh?)I think it looks like a lot of white pacman's (or pacmen?) Either way, I love how you've made use of it.
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt.
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe IKEA does not sell their sheets online! The nearest IKEA is at least 4 hours away.
Soooo jealous that you can get the sheets for easy sashing!
Beautiful! I have flat sheets from Ikea for backings too... never used them for sashing but I just might! Piecing coin quilts isn't my favourite either hehe
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful! You are so ridiculously talented, woman. I would give up my pumpkin pancake recipe for an ounce of your creativity!
ReplyDeleteI too wish I had an Ikea closer to me. Love the bed sheet trick :)
Thank you for the seam allowance confession. :-) It's comforting to know that incredible quilts can come to life even if one's accuracy is less than 100% - gives me hope!
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is very beautiful! I love the colorful patches in contrast with the white background.
ReplyDeleteIKEA is quite handy! Two of my quilts have an IKEA backing too, and I have material for a third one also.

I'm so excited that they're finally building an IKEA in Denver so I can find out what everyone is talking about! Love the backing fabric and beautiful job as usual!! And how fun to have a tutorial on Sew Mama Sew! She said such nice things about you! Hope you know they're true!
ReplyDeletebeautiful! i really think i need to make a trip to ikea now!
ReplyDeleteYou are so prolific, AmandaJean! Another great finish.
ReplyDeletepretty! i love the ikea duvet!
ReplyDelete*sigh* No IKEA close by, although we have a distribution center quite close, so what's up with that??
ReplyDeleteAnd Flickr? I haven't tried picnik, but I DID finally sign up for a Flickr account. And that's as far as I got. Talk about slow...
It looks great! Thanks for the sheet tip. A great idea.
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful! I read your sheet tip a couple weeks ago and have been cutting away on one for sashing and all my white needs since. Thanks for the tip!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea to use those Ikea sheets!!! The quilt is stunning!
ReplyDeleteI love it. I should squeeze an IKEA trip in somewhere, I really should.
ReplyDeleteThat turned out great! I have to admit--I'm a recent IKEA sheet convert. I was there yesterday, saw twin sheets for $1.99 each and snapped up 3. My husband looked at me like I was nuts, til I mentioned the economy of it. He still thinks I'm nuts, just a smart shopper. :D
ReplyDeleteAnother beautiful quilt! Your quilts are always so clean and neat looking . . . precise and edgey. Is that what I'm trying to say?
ReplyDeleteGreat backing and binding on this one. For some reason I always have to push myself to use a "busy" fabric for binding . . . but am always glad when I do.
I like the way you offset the strips.
ReplyDeleteAnother beautiful quilt! I can't wait to try the Ikea sheets myself. I'm working on a stacked coins quilt for my daughter's birthday and think I will use the sheets as the sashing thanks to your blog! :D Though I hope I find coin quilts to be somewhat easy - it's only my second quilt!
ReplyDeleteGreat finish! I love all the ikea elements :) I went looking for that sheet and couldn't find it, then again, I had three busy girls that were done by then . . . I love how you have offset the strips :)
ReplyDeleteSadly, the closest IKEA is four hours away but on our latest trip, we made a special detour to a new one. I stockpiled the sheets without having to explain to my husband what the purpose was. Now I have to force myself to USE them because otherwise, what's the use?
ReplyDeleteI think that quilt is so pretty. It just sparkles...
ReplyDeleteI have always loved the way coin quilts look and plan to make three .... one for each sister...but now a little concerned when you say the piecing is tricky. Yours always looks so bright and fresh...if that makes sense. I agree with CitricSugar's comment about the 1/4 inch confession...I feel less stressed. As others mentioned, I just now got a flickr account (quilt festival) and have not heard of picnik. Will try it. Another beautiful quilt. Like the offset coins.
ReplyDeleteYou got it right. People think a quilt like this is so easy but it is hard to get it looking good and even like yours. I love to use Ikea sheets and fabric, too. But I hate going to Ikea!
ReplyDeleteYou? You don't have a perfect 1/4" seam? I don't believe it! There is hope for me after all! I'm getting better at it.
ReplyDeleteI love the way our quilt turned out...great idea using sheets for the sashing. I am going to try that!
ReplyDeletelove it!! Thanks for the tip on picture editing...I might try that too. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks also for making so many beautiful quilts for all of us to oooh and aaah over!
I really like that quilt!!! You are so creative!!! Can you make a tutorial for it??? I would love that!!! :D
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt!
ReplyDeleteI love the sheet idea... I"m getting ready to repurpose some of my kids' old crib sheets. The elastic is shot in them, so they're not good for anything else!
Another idea for sheets is to go hunt at Goodwill or other thrift stores. I was looking there the other day and spotted at king-size Land's End white sheet for $5!! I didn't have the money for it then, but I wish I had!
You make so many quilts, what do you do with all of them? They're so gorgeous; I couldn't give any away!
ReplyDeleteI recently completed this quilt top which I posted here http://www.quiltbliss.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteI wasn't sure whether to do a white border or not but based on your quilt and some comments on my blog, I think I will. Thanks for sharing.
I told my husband that I want to make every quilt you post, he said "DO IT!" He doesn't know what he is asking for!
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt, you have inspired me sooo much!! I cant keep up with all your great ideas!!
ReplyDeleteYou're far from alone, I'm sure...I haven't tried picnik yet! beautiful quilt - i always love what you end up with, too!
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful! LOVE IT ♥
ReplyDeletethis looks fabulous..great colour combo
ReplyDeleteReally, I think about you all the time! As I'm in my sewing room, usually ironing Superman's capes and such, I wonder how you manage to sew all these quilts ANNND take pictures ANNNND blog about them! You are amazing!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, just love it! By the way, you are not the last one to try picnik. I have never hear of it, therefore never tried it.
ReplyDeleteAmandajean, you tend to use a lot of white in your borders and bindings. I'm afraid to do that because of dirty hands or dirty paws. Do you have trouble with them getting dirty?
ReplyDeleteI love your work. Totally.

Thank you for all the tips and knowledge you share with us. Now to scoot over to Ikea to see what I can salvage after I manage to recover from my purchases from last year (stash and the sewing machine).

ReplyDeleteLovely Amanda Jean!!!
ReplyDeletei am in love with the simplicity of the coin quilts. great scrappy leftover project.
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt. I like how you use the sheets etc for the quilts. I like the coin quilts, quick and easy I think. I need to learn to use sheets more often.
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful CrazyMom! You're so lucky you have an Ikea near you -- we're Ikea-less. So, so sad!
ReplyDeleteIT's a really stunnig quilt. I love the design.
ReplyDeleteAbbe
I've never tried a coin quilt or the scrap quilt but I think I'd like to try the scrap quilt first. I like the idea of a non-fussy project!
ReplyDeletei use ikea sheets and duvets for quilts all the time, fronts and backs. I just used one on the quilt I'm making for my soon to arrive baby and I'm making a frog quilt for my son out of a duvet that looks like water. EASY! I'm just cutting apart the duvet, appliqueing a frog on front, adding a batting, quilting concentric circles (big ones), and binding with the same fabric I used for the frog.
ReplyDeleteFor the sake of sounding dumb- is the Spare Change quilt made from your Stacked Coins pattern, but alternated with white strips or coins?
ReplyDeleteI'm sort of new to quilting, but not embarrassed to ask questions.
I know you hear this a lot, but you inspire me to quilt & keep trying.
Brenda
Fun quilt...but maybe we should have a quilt challenge to see if you can make something WITHOUT white in it.
ReplyDeletebrenda,
ReplyDeleteyes, this quilt is very similar to the one i posted on the moda bake shop. this one is just larger and has alternate white patches.
aj
love the quilt..and the name!! you are much better at this name game than i am!!
ReplyDeletewhat a pretty quilt! I think I need to make a trip to ikea soon :)
ReplyDeleteThis is VERY attractive. IKEA is supposed to be coming to our city. I'd forgotten they have fabric. Yipee!
ReplyDeleteUmmm... WOW! I LOVE THIS.
ReplyDeleteI used the same IKEA duvet cover for a backing also and I still have the other half to play with! Love your quilt!
ReplyDeleteLove it!! Beautiful as always. I love how crinkled and soft it looks!
ReplyDeleteThese quilts are so fun and easy. I did mine rainbow!

IKEA eh? Do you do a double binding?
P.S. I changed the name of my blog.

Nice idea to make the quilt from remaining pieces.Looks good for the best.
ReplyDeleteso I meant to leave a comment on this post when you actually posted it, but I guess I was too lazy that day to click over from google reader.
ReplyDeleteANYWAY - this answers my question about using the unwashed sheet for the long sashing - it doesn't look like it shrunk too much for the rest of the quilt. Unless you did prewash it. I'm guessing you didn't.
