This quilt is going to be a door prize at the retreat that I will be teaching at in November. (That's in 6 weeks!) It is made from Moda's Nouveau fabric line and Kona cotton (color=bone). It was my first time using Kona cotton for sashing a quilt. It was ok, but I'm not hooked on it like I was afraid I might be.
As I mentioned in my last post, the quilt had a redesign along the way. Originally I was going to configure the blocks like this. But I switched it at the last minute. You gotta listen to what the quilt is telling you, right V? ;)
The quilt measures 63" x 77" after washing. (it was 64" x 80" before quilting and washing.)
Of course, it's two quilts in one. I L-O-V-E the back. I really need to figure out how to design my quilt backs to be quilt fronts. I am determined to figure it out. Soon! Or else it will drive. Me. CRAZY. (and my husband, too.)
I love this busy print for binding. LOVE it!
I'm happy to have this one done. It was challenging, but well worth it. I think my favorite part was playing with fabric that someone else (Tara) had selected.
Now, on to the next...
Wow. This is fabulous. And the name is perfect. Perfect!! Also love the busy binding. Question: why not a fan of the Kona for the sashing?

ReplyDeleteIt looks wonderful! I have a theory about the back, I often love my backs more than the front, too. I think that since you're not 'trying' to design the back - it's more organic and free - the result is more at ease. Things frequently look better when you don't over think.

ReplyDeleteGreat job - I LOVE the back. You will have to share tips on centering it so well. And you HAVE to try shot cotton for sashing if you haven't already. It is my favorite, bar none!

I love it! Front and back. I too am curious about your not so love of Kona, as everyone else seems to rave? In a thought about your fronts/ backs, you could always design front, design back, and then make them the front of two different quilts!

ReplyDeleteI LOVE this one! I love the blocks in rows like that, it makes it more interesting and different. Love the colors too! I don't know where you find the patience to make all your impressive quilt backs. By the time I make the front I want to just finish it already....so the back usually is a lame sheet or something. :) I LOVE your backs though..they're amazing!

ReplyDeleteok... i'm like a few of the others... HOW do you get the back to stay so perfectly straight? i have 2 tops currently that will have pieced backs, but i'm stalling since i have no idea how to keep them straight when i baste/quilt them.
ReplyDeleteand.... why are you not a fan of kona? i'm using it for the first time on my wonky log cabins for john's quilt along and i'm not sure i like it 100% yet either. i've used a variety of whites and i just haven't figured out which i like best yet. i figured since there are so many raving about kona, i'd give it a shot.

ReplyDeleteFilm in the Fridge went through a phase where each of her backs inspired the front of the next quilt. Maybe you should try that and just love the fact that with them reversible, you get two quilts for one!

ReplyDeleteYour quilt is fabulous. I have to laugh at the photo of the backing. Normally you see the feet of the person holding the quilt. There is no way those little legs have arms long enough to be holding up that quilt.

ReplyDeleteI'm a Kaufman Kona freak (snow is my fave). I've tried the bone on one of my quilts - and not a fave of mine. Nice, but not feelin' the love for it like I do snow.

ReplyDeleteI also wanted to let you know I started the 9 patch quilt along with you but I got super motivated and got all the squares done early and I opted not to do any border. Anyway, it was my first quilt ever, so it has lots of mistakes but I love it nonetheless.
I just finished up doing just the star blocks from your star quilt along and made a lap quilt out of it and did stippling for the first time in my life (which I guess isn't surprising since this is only my second quilt). It was a PAIN to do but I love love love the outcome.
Anyway, thanks for all the help you've given me without even realizing it. Pictures of the quilts are on my blog if you want to see them.
