I started a new quilt that is "out of the box" for me. (sorry for the lame pun.) Inspired by this quilt. I cut out a bunch of circles today from a woodland bloom charm pack. The circles are rotary cut using a CD as a template. That has to be the coolest trick ever if you ask me.
The fabric is too fun! I am crazy about circles...and after the flannel quilt (I hope to have the top done this weekend) that I'm working on...circles will be next. I've already bought the fabric and am rearing to go. You, AmandaJean, are too good to us! Thanks for sharing so much with us!
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever idea AmandaJean! I have just downloaded a pattern for a Cathedral Window Rag Quilt that I'd like to start and thought about buying some more template plastic.....forget that idea...off to the cd cabinet!!!!!

How wonderful! Woodland Bloom is one of my favorite fabric lines. Lila Tuellar is my favorite fabric designer. She is having a giveaway on her blog, if you are interested.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
Hadn't ever thought of using a CD before. I've used bowls plenty but a CD sounds like a great idea.
ReplyDeleteLove that quilt! Can't wait to see the finished product!
ReplyDeleteI think you should make this a tutorial!! :D YEAH!!! IT WILL BE SO FUN!! :D I have been wanting to do a circle quilt, but am scared, but with your gentle guidance, I think I could do it! :D
ReplyDeletePretty!
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be great. I 2nd the tutorial idea. I'm still a beginner quilter and can use all the help I can get.
ReplyDeleteThe CD is a great idea! I can't wait to see what you do with them!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see what you are going to do next....make sure you show us, step by step! Thanks!

I had not heard the CD trick - that's awesome!
ReplyDeleteIt will be lovely! I love that Woodland Bloom fabric.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful fabric. I clicked on the link to the tutorial. Great idea.
ReplyDeleteSo, are you a hand applique girl or a machine applique-er?
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see this one finished because I just happen to have a charm pack that's not been spoken for...
Have you seen the circle quilt over at LizzyHouse that she made? It is done in her Red Letter Day line of fabric. I'm making a small version of it out of pinks and oranges, it uses freezer paper. Circles are so fun, I noticed in the tut. for this one that she zigzagged the edges, it would be very cute just sewn 1/4 inch in and left raw.
ReplyDeleteOh I hope to do that one too! I knew exactly what you were doing without looking at the link! Did you see her tut on her blog?
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to break out of the box myself and this actually looks easy enough and fun, too! I love your fabric choices!
ReplyDeletelooks like you better get your zig zag going! round and round! have fun. Look forward to seeing it all together...tomorrow? ha!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what comes out of this. Gosh I have not felt good today, allergies. Didn't feel like doing anything. I hate a day like that.
ReplyDeleteQMM
i've had that quilt on my to do list for awhile too...maybe I need to get at it--oh and 30 other projects! :)
ReplyDeleteIs it done with reverse applique? It's lovely. I'm looking forward to seeing what you create. :o)
ReplyDeleteYou know me and circles, I'm going to love this.
ReplyDeleteI'm totally on a circles kick so I'm excited to see what you make!
ReplyDeleteOoh! This is going to be so pretty! Hmmm, I have a couple of unused charm packs....
ReplyDeleteI am so inspired now... eeep... another quilt on the list.
ReplyDeleteThat is a gorgeous quilt - can't wait to see yours.
ReplyDeletepretty! Can't wait to see what they become!
ReplyDeleteNice circles! Can't wait to see what's coming out next! By the way, I think you make a little mistake with my name...I didn't send you a package, ok? :-)
ReplyDeleteI would be happy to help you with the "quilts of valor", but I do not have enough time to do a block...sorry...besides, I live in Brazil, remember? And don't even have your adress...
I think another Patricia sent you a nice package.

Thanks for the visit on my blog! I'm honored!
Another great quilt in the works! Can't wait to see more.
ReplyDeleteNice collection of fabric prints.
ReplyDeleteIt just never ends does it?
ReplyDeleteAWESOME!You are very inspiring,PLEASE do a tutorial, yours is very simple to follow!
ReplyDeleteThat quilt is darling - I might have to make one too. I discovered a circle rotary cutter & used it to make Amy Butler's 'Belle' quilt. It was super easy to use - I would highly recommend it (unless of course you'd rather stick with using a CD - very clever :).
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to remember the CD template thing! Very good tip :) And I've not actually given muchthought to Woodland Bloom but I quite like it! Lovely colours.
ReplyDeletethis looks like it is going to be so much fun
ReplyDeleteAmanda Jean,
ReplyDeleteThis same quilt inspired me to start a circle quilt! I also found it helpful to us a scrapbooking circle cutter to cut freezer paper and then continue using a gather stitch and ironing the circles like Naptime quilter shares was great for a finished edge applique. I haven't finished my quilt yet but can't wait to see your finished one.
Can't wait to see what you do with circles!! Loving the fabric you chose too.
ReplyDeleteI like the circle quilt! Very pretty!
ReplyDeletecircles....cd's...fun!!! will have to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteThe colors are yummy and you are very, very brave to work with circles. Can't wait to see it!! A-
ReplyDeleteI'm sure this will be another CMQ masterpiece!!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see it finished!!! (And if I know you, that won't be too long)
Andi :-)
Lovely quilt, but you caught me out - I thought you'd be doing this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/beckydavisphoto/3909794754/
ReplyDeleteHi! I'm so glad to hear that my quilt inspired you!(A friend of mine told me you had mentioned my quilt on your blog-I wondered why I had so many visitors today!)I'll be watching to see how yours turns out! (And let me know if my tutorial needs any clarification too.) -Stephanie
ReplyDeleteWe'll be making circle applique blocks for charity quilts; rotary cutting them using a CD is a great idea that I'll bring to my group. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea to use the CD as a template for the cutter. I shall have to remember that one!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you're doing a circle quilt. I just did that little one for DQS7 for Rebekah, but now I'd like to do a larger one. And I do love woodland bloom. Your quilt is going to be lovely.
ReplyDeleteAwesome idea:) Cant wait to see this quilt.
ReplyDeleteThat's going to look so cool! Can't wait to see its progress.
ReplyDeleteI love that quilt! The only problem is that I'm definitely not a fan of raw edges on quilts, so I'd have to figure out how to turn under a seam allowance then zigzag.
ReplyDeletePretty fabric. I have avoided patterns for quilts with circles. I am scared of them. You will share how this goes? I would love to know how it's done and if you enjoyed the process.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this! I made my daughter's crib quilt similar to this. I am now thinking of making one with my collection of striped fabrics. Can't wait to see how yours turns out.
ReplyDeleteAnother cool trick I did was to cut my circles a bit bigger than the cd and then did a running stitch around the edge and pulled then around a used the cd, sprayed them with a bit of starch and ironed the edges over with the cd inside!! it warps a bit but lays down again when it cools! Alan Jackson was used wisely and made a whole quilt
ReplyDeleteWho knew? Thanks for sharing a great idea!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea for extra fabric! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLOVE-ly... as always...
ReplyDeleteI too would love to see a tutorial done by you on the cutting and attaching the circles.
inspiring - as usual...

a new project... how exciting!
ReplyDeleteThese circles are very cute!!
You could make a bull's eye quilt, too.
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to make a circle quilt, also. Did you use the tiny rotary cutter so it will go around the curves easier? I thought I would first try this: Iron on the Steam-a-seam fusing to the fabric to be cut. I"m hoping that will make the fabric stiff enough to use the circle cutter by Martha Stewart I bought at Michael's. You can make any size circle desired. Wish me luck.
ReplyDeleteVery cool! How do you avoid cutting into the cd? I would think if you accidentally cut into the cd it would dull the blade of the rotary cutter?
ReplyDeleteyou know i'm going to be asking you how to do this don't you???:) i love the quilt that you linked to.
ReplyDeletewhat a cute idea for a circle quilt design! Yay for conquering your fear of circles too :)
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see this all finished! Here's a similar tutorial ... http://kimberlykesti.typepad.com/thinkfast/2009/08/sew-much-fun.html
ReplyDeletebut using interfacing.
I always love the results when you push yourself a bit out of your comfort zone. Looking forward to seeing where you go with the circles!
ReplyDeleteOH so patiently waiting..... to see what you do with those circles...
ReplyDeleteenamored as usual!!

i love circles...the cd as a template is a great idea. i wonder if an old record (you know vinyl) would work for big ones? might have to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this quilt!!!
