carrot top

My wee play quilt is done! I started with 3 charm packs from the wee play line and then I added fat quarters from my stash from that line and various other moda fabrics. I love how well the different lines work together.

It was hard to quilt. (Lots of seams.)

I used the disappearing 9 patch pattern, which is pretty fun.

I love the back. A lot. It features more of my favorite red polka dot. (I still have almost a yard left. I'll be so sad when it's gone.)
Since the back was a bit smaller than the front (oops!), quilting was a bit tricky, but I squeaked by. Barely. I had to add a little patch of cream to fill in one spot, but it's barely noticeable. I did end up trimming down the quilt top just a bit (maybe an eighth of an inch on each end). The sides were just fine. I think I learned my lesson. I hope I learned my lesson.

It's a twin size. (My third twin quilt in a row.) For my next project, I'm ready to move on to something smaller.

  3. nice job! again! when you say it was hard to quilt because it had lots of seams, is it because there's lots of bumps and potentially broken needles, or is it harder to move the fabric around, or under the foot, because of the seams?

thanks amandajean for your quilty coolness once again!

  4. andrea,

it's harder to move the fabric under the foot because of all the seams. i wonder if there is a trick i have to learn about this yet.

  5. Lovely quilt! I love the Wee Play fabrics. Is this your own pattern?
It looks like it would make a good charity quilt.

I have a small piece of that red/white dot left and I am hoarding it...

  7. Very Cute!!!

I found that when quilting a quilt with allot of seams, pressing the seams open seems to help some. But I know what you mean by it being hard, my commission quilt was a nightmare!! But my son's quilt I pressed the seams open and did not have any problems other than running out of bobbin thread here and there lol

  11. I always love your binding fabric! I can't tell very well from the pictures, but I'm assuming it's stippled. Do you do anything else besides a grid or stippling?

  12. I love it! I love the way the orange pops. Another fantastic quilt.

  17. tara,

i usually stick to stippling or grid quilting...especially on my larger quilts. once in awhile i will branch out, but that only seems to happen on doll quilts. :)

  29. AmandaJean....you are one amazing crazy mom quilter! I am so impressed! I really want to try a disappearing nine patch soon, too, it looks so much more complicated than it really is! I like that part! Check out my sneak peak at my baby quilt top. Let me know what you think! Have a great weekend!

  32. You are a machine! I hope your arms and back are doing alright with all this quilting :) Great colors in your top - so fun! Love that back too!

I used some of that mingle rings - it's sooo nice. The brown was a little crazy too look at in large doses though :)

  41. I love this patch and how it creates such a neat scrappy look!

  42. I think one of the best things about patchwork is finding ways to add bits in to make the right size - seems to be part of the historical tradition to me! Looks fab by the way.

    ReplyDelete
  43. It's really pretty! I love the greens with the oranges - they work so nicely together! Glad to hear it wasn't a disaster with the slightly too small back!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Can you post about stippling some time? Or maybe you already did and i missed it...

    ReplyDelete
  45. Your CarrotTop quilt turned out so cute, cute name too. :) I just love making those Disappearing 9 patch quilts, so quick & fun. Congrats on finishing another twin size quilt. Great job!

  46. It's so bright and cheery. Now a question???...what do you typically do with all your quilts? I looked at my stack of quilts and wondered that recently. I could never stop making them!! At some point when do you have so many that you can't use them all...something to think about I guess.

  47. I love this quilt. It is so appealing and something that would be so fun to use. I love the polka dots on the back...

Lovely! I am currently trying a dissapearing 9 patch (thanks you your inspiration) and I need to know, once you cut the larger squares, to you just turn them and keep them with the same block, or do you just randomly sew those final cut blocks together??
    Keep up the great work!

  51. Fantastic quilt! Those fabrics look great together in the disappearing nine patch.
Glad to hear you made that backing work... I know firsthand the "holding of my breathe" moment when it comes to having to squeak by with a smaller backing.

  52. This is so adorable. I love it. I'm glad that someone as professional as yourself makes mistakes too, so please keep sharing them if you do make anymore. I'd love to feel better about my mistakes. :) Very beautiful!

  54. This is so pretty! It totally reminds me of summer vegetables!

  55. Great name! I can see how that would be a bitch to stipple.

    ReplyDelete
  56. That surely came together quickly! I once made a disappearing nine patch with some romantic fabric from Moda, and I didn't really like the result. We Play seems to be a lot better fit for that.

  57. Loved the quilt.

  58. Great finish! Beautiful work. I took a look at the pattern and didn't even understand it! OK, I'm not much of a quilter. But still...it sure is a pretty quilt!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I love it! So much so that I'm working on with the same fabric using the same method. I'm a beginner and a little afraid to free motion just yet - do you have any suggestions on what type of grid pattern you would use to quilt this?

    ReplyDelete
  73. This quilt is amazing! I want to make one! what pattern did you use? and where can I find it?

  74. Shyla6:41 PM

Hey I love this quilt and wondered did you make up the pattern or where did you find it? I mainly have done appliqued quilts and I am looking for a patchwork one like this to try next. I would like some help finding this type of pattern if you wouldn't mind. Thank you so much I love reading your blogs and seeing your work I think that it is all amazing.

  76. You just don't know what you started! lol!! I've been cutting out squares like crazy and fell in love with the pattern you used. I am totally lusting after the wee play fabric but will have to wait until I use up some of what I have - sigh. Thank you for the inspiration!!

  77. Hi Amanda Jean, I love your blog and it has inspired me in so many ways.
I'm about to emabark on a disappearing 9 patch and wanted to know if you keep your original 9 patch layout together after you cut it or do you then mix them up further. I was trying to examine your wee wonderful and couldn't work out where the 'partners' ended up sometimes. Love your insights. Hope I'm not too late to ask a question about this one!

  78. theresa,

after cutting apart the 9 patches, i mixed all those little blocks up. i did not sew the 4 quarters back together into the same block. i hope that helps!
