measurements for flea market fancy quilt

edit...after further calculations, I changed the yardage requirement for the sashing fabric from 2 1/3 to 2 3/4 yards. (see below.)

First off, I'd like to thank Alissa for her inspiration AND her willingness to let me share this pattern with all of you.

Here are the measurements I used for my flea market fancy quilt top....

cut a 5" inch square for the center of the block.
you will need 20.
cut 2 rectangles 3.5" x 5"

and 2 rectangles 3.5" x 11".

assemble the block with a 1/4" seam allowance.

each 1/4 yard (I used 1/4 yards, not fat quarters for this, but FQ's would work, too) will yield enough pieces to border 2 blocks.

you will need 10 quarter yards for the outsides of the blocks.

make 20 blocks.

for the sashing:

I used bleached muslin. you will need 2 3/4 yards.

first, cut 2 border pieces 5" x 80 1/2" (cut this lengthwise, not selvage to selvage, to avoid seams). set this aside for your final borders. (these will be placed vertically)

cut 6 border/sashing pieces 5" x 56". (these will be placed horizontally)

cut 15 sashing pieces 5" x 11". (these will be placed vertically)

Assemble your quilt top.

It will measure approximately 65" x 80.5" when finished.

In the original quilt, Alissa placed some of the center blocks off center, and that can be done easily, just make sure that your square measures 11" when assembled. or you can make the block oversized and then trim as needed.

If you have any questions, I'll try to answer them in the comments. If you make a quilt using these measurements, I'd love to see it!

Oooo, this may be my first real quilt! How fun and thanks for sharing the pattern! I just made my first "quilts" as baby doll quilts so i could get a feel for things. I am now addicted!

Thank you for posting this. I've been wanting to make a vintage sheet quilt and thought perhaps I would use something different than the 10 inch squares you used. I am going to use the flea market pattern instead. I haven't made a quilt since my 29 nine year old son was young but the bug has bit and I think I am ready to give it a try. Thank You for the daily encouragement your site provides.

Thanks so much for the measurements and what perfect timing! I had found a picture of a quilt with this exact pattern and was planning on trying to figure out some measurements for it, but you beat me to it! Now I just have to expand it to a California King size...

I was just going to sit down with my mom to figure out the math (the one thing I hate about sewing) on the quilt you made because I love it! Now I don't have to, thanks. Once I start if I have any questions I will post another comment. Thanks.

Thank you so much Amanda and Alissa for sharing.

I will most definitely make this quilt using layer cake. That means I have to make adjustment to the dimension. Will let you know of the progress.

Thanks both of you. I can't wait to get this one started. The directions are great. Thanks a million.

I LOVE your quilts, your instructions, your blog! You are truly inspiring! Thank you so much for taking the time to show us what you do. One question: I was wondering if you press your fabrics before cutting and after each sewing step. It doesn't look like it, yet your quilts always look so beautiful and perfect! Do you wait until all the blocks are together to press? I would love to be able to eliminate all the pressing I do in between each step, as it would save so much time! Thanks for your help.

Such a great simple quilt! Thanks to you and Alissa for sharing :)

Pari,

I DO press my fabrics before cutting and after each step, even if it doesn't look like it. pressing is SO important.

i love this! i'm just starting to attempt to make quilts, but i don't know whats the best way to to finish a piece. any suggestions? i like when quilts have decorative stitches, but i have no idea how to do that.
thanks and happy holidays!

Thanks for letting me know about the pressing, Amanda Jean! You're right, that is a very important step, I just thought maybe I could save a little time! :)

I love your comment about pressing. The few times I have sewn up something, I feel I always get better results by always ironing in between each set I do :)

Alexis,

I have several tutorials on my sidebar for how to finish your quilts. first check out the "one way to baste a quilt" tutorial. then you will want to check out the one is labeled "free motion quilting" tutorial, complete with video (but no sound). that should get you well on your way to finishing your quilt. then, to finish, view the binding and labeling tutorials...and you should be all set. I hope this helps!!!

Hi! I have to tell you, last week I sat and read every single one of your archived posts. I love your blog! I love the fabrics you pick and the patterns you use, all of it.

I have been quilting for a while, but am mostly self-taught. I used your binding tutorial a couple weeks ago and it worked so much better than what I had always been doing.

So thank you so much for all the time you put into your quilts and your blog! (You inspired me to start my own!)

I just ordered fabrics to make this quilt (the blocks, will buy the muslin once the blocks are all made up)

Question--- would this fit a queen size bed? Your appx. measurements seem like it would, but i didn't know "how approximate" the measurements truly were.

(my previous comment didn't post the whole thing.. here is the rest...)

Just wondering if i missed somewhere on your blog... what kind of batting you use in your quilts. (ALso, if different what specifically was used in the flea market quilt)

thank you! I can't wait to get started on this one!

Amanda Jean said...

PeakmoreAcademy,

i use warm and white cotton battting for all my quilts. this would not fit a queen bed. it will (barely) fit a twin/single bed. if you want it to fit a queen you can always make more blocks.

hope this helps!

Angi said...

Thanks for replying w/ the info on the batting. This will be my first real quilt & i can't wait to make it!

yeah, i realized i'd messed up on the "will it fit a queen" after i'd posted (but no way to edit comment, LOL) when i looked again at the RIGHT row in a chart i was looking at. Thanks for your help!!!

Thank you for the great tutorial. I like the solid sashing, I have lots of plain Kona here so I can try it. I was also gifted a large stack of Novelty squares--I feel a project coming on!

Love this quilt, and it seems like a good one to make your first! One question: How many different fabrics did you use to make up the blocks? Thanks!!!!
