Christmas coins
This is what I came up with for the silent auction quilt. I started yesterday morning after I woke up in a panic...there is SO MUCH to do before Christmas. I only have week to get this done and with Thanksgiving coming up, well, that will seriously cut into my quilting time.
I pieced it completely from my scraps, except for the cream sashing. Many of the scraps were leftover from this quilt. While I was working on it, I remembered that I don't like making stacked coin quilts. They look easy, but lining up the rows isn't, at least for me. I think it came out ok....I guess I'll know for sure when I quilt it. I made one row skinnier than the rest because I ran out of wider scraps. I like the effect a lot.
On an unrelated note....
...I took down my daughter's crib yesterday.
I almost cried. She's growing up way too fast.
The quilt is beautiful. Yes, children grow up too fast. Enjoy every moment.
ReplyDeleteyou amaze me, my friend. The quilt is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI can' believe your little sweetie is big enough to be out of a crib.
Miss you, friend!
Your coin quilt is great! I love the skinnier row. And I love that Happy Hour Christmas quilt. Okay, I'm off to work on MY Christmas quilt.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this! . I'm embarking on a stacked coin king-sized quilt after the holidays...I'll be checking in with you for tips, I'm sure!
ReplyDeleteWow. You did a fantastic job!!! Id LOVE to have that quilt, and OMG the quilt that the scraps came from.. BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteKids do grow up too fast.
Lovely quilt. Save those crib rails too- they make great quilt racks.
ReplyDeleteThat quilt looks awesome. I'm not much of a christmas kind of girl, but that fabric combination looks lovely.
ReplyDeleteDon't fret about the loss of the cot. Just think of all the quilts you can make for her big-girl-bed.
Andi :-)
Love what you've got going on with the coins!
ReplyDeleteI think I will cry when I take down our crib - he's still a baby now - but it has been set up and used consistently for 8 years. I hope you all sleep good :) Those transitions are buggers!
You are a Christmas quilt machine. I am hoping to get one made by Christmas.
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is lovely. I've not made a stacked coins quilt, but have a desire to and would never have guessed that there's any trickiness to it ~ thanks for the heads up!
ReplyDeleteOne day last weekend when there was little new on the blogging front; I went back through the archives on your block and read all the postings from may til this month to catch me up. Boy, you are inspiring! Thanks for a boost to my spirit and a little envy of your youth and energy...lol.
Love the stacked coins! You amaze me at how fast you can finish a quilt top! I haven't even started the quilting on the fishy quilt yet. I need to get on the ball, though (chuckling at my use of words there :) ) and get it done, the baby shower is Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your blog. This quilt is awesome. So...where do I bid on this silent auction!? ;o)
ReplyDeleteThe coin quilt is beautiful. it is always nice making a quilt from scraps. yes the children grow up so fast.
ReplyDeleteI love the colours of the quilt...I especially love the white sashing as the "frame". It makes the colours more beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYes, those growing milestones are so precious and tough on us at the same time. Hang in there, and enjoy the excitement of the big girl bed!!
I like the narrow row. You are right. chinese coins are more time consuming than they look.
ReplyDeleteJust think of all the lovely quilts and things you can make for her big girl bed!
ReplyDeleteI love the coin quilt, especially the narrow stack of coins. How do you accomplish so much quilting?! You amaze me! It's a beautiful quilt, as always.
ReplyDeleteTina
Hi,
ReplyDeleteThis is stunning! I went on the internet and ordered some charm packs yesterday - your Christmas quilt inspired me to give them a go!! Its also the first time I have ordered fabric off the net so Im excited!
I have noticed that you use alot of white in your quilts. I cant tell from the photos and was wondering if you use plain white fabric or if its a white on white print in all of your quilts?
Cheers, from Erin in Australia :)
wow! two christmas quilts in a week...terrific work! i haven't sewed a stitch..resting my neck. maybe this weekend i can get back to it.
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt! The one slimer row is great. Imperfections make things perfect.
ReplyDeleteStacked coin quilt is on my list to do.
beautiful! I love the paintbox one too! thanks for sharing! I love your fabric choices!
ReplyDeleteFrom scraps you say? (did you hear my heartbeat speed up?) Wow! It's so very gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI love the row of skinnier scrips - it adds some extra interest to the top. How will you be quilting it? Can't wait to see which pretty fabric you'll choose for the binding!
That's definitely a tear inducing milestone, Amandajean. Hug your wee girl.
I love the quilt! And to think you did it in a day??? Sad kids grow up way too quick....
ReplyDeletegiving up the crib is so hard to do...i waited as long as i could with my littlest
ReplyDeleteThe hardest thing for me was giving away my baby's car seat. He was three. It was the one-and-only that he had used... my babies were big (over 10 and 9 pounds at birth) so we never did the buckets, just straight to a Britax 5-point harness carseat. Anyway, it was much harder for me than the crib. Is that weird?
ReplyDeleteLove the stacked coins!! I'm sure it will be a big hit.
ReplyDeleteI DID cry when I took Sydney's down. She helped me do it (the girl is handy with a screwdriver) and she was very excited and not sad at all, which made her seem even bigger. Where does the time go?
I love both of them. I check your site everyday. You inspire me. Hope one day my work will be half as good as yours. I made your tree skirt for a gift. I also free motion the skirt and one quilt. It was the first time.
ReplyDeleteThe coin stack quilt is beautiful! It turned out great with the skinny strip. I also made a tree skirt with your tutorial this week and it turned out great; thanks for posting it!:)
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is gorgeous! And so is that Christmas quilt you made :)
ReplyDeleteI have no idea where all those days went! It seems we just had 50-60 days until Christmas, and now we're down to.....what....close to nothing! I'm so thankful we don't celebrate Thanksgiving. LOL! I would be so stressed out ;)
Taking down the crib is a big deal..she is getting big, huh?!
I took my daughter's crib down about six months ago, and then two months ago she made me put it back up because she decided she was a little baby again... sigh.
ReplyDeleteIts so sad when you have to put the cot back into storage. I'm not looking forward to that day. The quilt is stunnng, I love the narrow strip of coins. It makes it really interesting.
ReplyDeleteHello, well the thing is I'm stunned! I arrived at your blog yesterday night looking for a tutorial for book covers and... couldn't leave your blog for hours!(reason for which my alarm clock ended up against the wall this morning) (It's morning now here..)
ReplyDeleteYour tutorials are FAN-TAS-TIC. I think even I could manage to make a quilt myself.
I have seen your quilt-a-longs and I wonder if you are preparing another because I want to be the first on that list for sure.
Thanks. My life won't be the same from now on :)
Biquiños from Spain.
Your quilt looks wonderful. Don't ya love Christmas colors!
ReplyDeleteAwww, I can relate to the crib thing. Took me 7 or 8 years before I could let my dd's crib go. It was up until she was 5 or 6 because of the awwww factor.
I love the coins quilt - I want to make one these holidays. I have just soooooo many scraps to use.
ReplyDeletei cried too
ReplyDeletei love the quilt
I did one of these, 300 little pieces and me a beginner. I finished with rows kind of wonky, but it looked good anyway. didn't realize it was called that.
ReplyDeleteYour little girl is lucky to have you as you have all those quilts to show her to decide which she wants on her new bed.
Yesterday, seems like mine were babies, today they are in their 40s.
The quilt is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI sympathize about the fast growing girl.
Happy Thanksgiving... your blog is something I am grateful for.
I am beyond amazed at how quickly you accomplish things. What do you do, absolutely sew all day long??? I worked for hours and hours yesterday, and barely managed to get anything done on my table runner. Of course I practically had to rip the whole out and that took forever, but still...
ReplyDeleteAfter having had 6 kids, I know exactly what you mean. It is SOOOOOOO sad they grow so quickly and if everyone could just realize how very short of time they are babies, I think they would cherish and relish that time so much more instead of acting like it is an inconvenience. You can NEVER hold a baby too much or kiss and love on them too much!
I agree, you will have a blast making all those quilts for that big girl bed! Crying with you though~ Jan
I love it!~ It's sure to be a hit at the auction. Oh I know exactly how you feel about breaking down the crib. I shed a few tears too :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous quilt, as usual.
ReplyDeleteI still haven't taken down Ava's crib, though she's been sleeping with Lily on and off for a month now. I guess when I find the girls a bigger bed it will be time. *sniff sniff*
Beautiful coin quilt! Also, love the one the scraps came from.
ReplyDeleteLittle ones grow up too fast! Enjoy her each and every day!
I love both or your Christmas quilts for this year and the one you made previously for your very lucky friend. Little ones grow up so fast. It is a very sad day when the crib gets taken down for the last time. Enjoy them while they are small. Soon they will be off to college. Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous quilt. Yes, enjoy the time, they grow up sooo fast.
ReplyDeleteTeresa
I love your creativity, it's inspiring. I especially love the Christmas Happy Hour Quilt.
ReplyDeleteDo you recall what fabrics you used to make that quilt?
I had never considered making myself a Christmas quilt before. Great idea. Thanks for sharing your love with all of us.
Oh I am going to hate seeing the crib go too. My daughter is two and a half but I am not ready to give it up yet. I hope this transition goes smoothly for all of you.
Happy Thanksgiving!
I knew you'd come through. The stacked coins looked great.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving!
Another great piece of work from Amandajean.
ReplyDeleteI might cry when I take down our crib, too. (First we need to buy the big girl bed.) It's been in use for almost 12 years straight.
My daughter is ready to be in a big-girl bed as well. As soon as we purchase one, her crib will head to Goodwill - off to snuggle with another little one. I am *so* not ready. It's nice to know I am not the only one who feels this way...
ReplyDeleteSigh...The crib down is a monumental moment. But, it is also the beginning of many wonderful more grown up things to share with her. No matter how big she gets, she'll always be your "baby".
ReplyDeletemother of 12 kiddos says:
ReplyDeleteu know there is a cure for the *taking down the crib blues* - just have another!
i know what you mean, i havent even started my presents for christmas yet!
ReplyDeleteLove your coin quilt...I think it is one of my favourite patterns as anything goes...
ReplyDeleteBe selfish with your crib. DO NOT loan it to anyone!!! I was kind enought to loan my babies' crib to a nephew in need, he was kind enough to give it away. I was crushed! I had to buy a new crib for my grandson instead of setting up his daddy's crib.
ReplyDeleteerin in australia,
ReplyDeletefor my white fabric I use bleached muslin. for my cream fabric I use quilter's only cotton in the color parchment. neither one has any tone on tone print on them.
aj
melanie,
ReplyDeletefor the happy hour christmas quilt i used a mix of fabrics, but several of them were from the holly jolly line from moda.
aj
Happy Thanksgiving. I have that same Jenny Lynn Crib at my house - dismantled! Love the Christmas coins. Such a good idea.
ReplyDeletesuch a cute, fresh, christmasy quilt! I love it.
ReplyDeleteI love it. The skinnier row is an unexpected stroke of genius.
ReplyDeleteMy heart actually beat faster as I read about your daughter's crib... growing up is so hard (for us!)
ReplyDeleteLovely quilt.
It looks like my own daughter's crib from years ago! We finally got rid of it this year, and she is almost 32! (Can you say--"Packrat?") But, it's hard for me to give up things that have emotional meaning!
