ragged squares quilt

I finished another quilt today. Hurray!

I had it nearly quilted when I had to stop to work on this quilt top, then this quilt needed to be completed on a deadline, so it had to sit for a bit. I like staggering my quilts in progress this way, though. It keeps things interesting.

I finished quilting it yesterday. Straight line quilting is not my cup of tea. Give me meandering any day!

I had to remove grease spots from this one, too. My walking foot was to blame this time. I tell you, if it weren't for Murphy Oil Soap I think I would be pretty proficient at applique right now. (I'm glad that I am not!)

This is my favorite square...

and here's the backing, which reminds me of vintage linens. It's Tracy Porter fabric from JoAnns.

I love the weight of this quilt...it's a bit heavier than most because I didn't cut out behind the stacked squares, so it has 3 layers of fabric in some places. It puckered up nicely after washing just like I had hoped. I had to do lots of trimming on the raw edges after drying it. LOTS of trimming.

If any of you are working on the quilt-a-long and your name isn't on the list, would you please let me know? I would appreciate it.

  1. I love it. Gee, I wish I could churn out quilts at the rate you do. I managed to put one border on a quilt today. ONE!

I started really, really late, but I'm working on the quilt-along. I've made baby quilts in the past but those were simple square block construction. This is my first time trying anything like this. Your instructions are fantantic.

I finished block eight tonight. The only problem I'm having is that the finished blocks aren't coming out 12.5" square but 12 1/4" square. And I'm not quite sure what it is that I'm doing wrong. Although I'm beginning to suspect that maybe it might be in the cutting.

So I've decided to call this one my practice quilt. Hopefully by block 12, I'll have figured out what the problem is and then I plan on starting a second quilt, because the blocks are coming out lovely, just not the right size.

  15. I like that you prefer a meandering quilt line to a straight one. It's not what I would have guessed, knowing a bit about your personality, but you sure do make those loopy lines pretty! The straight ones on this quilt are really wonderful, though. And nice puckering, indeed!

I have to say, I think this quilt of your s is one of my favorites that I've seen since "lurking" in the background of your blog for a while. Definitely one that I'll have to try out for myself.

As someone else said, I'm extremely behind in the quilt-a-long and have saved all the pages to continue in the future as well. Thanks for the detailed descriptions & marvelous ideas :-)

  17. it's GORGEOUS!

Last night, I started some of my sashing. And I trimmed up all of my squares, so at least the pile looks a bit neater now. ;)

But the most exciting part? I practiced, and overcame my fear of the free-motion quilting! Malka will have a LOT of bibs, and friends and family will have a LOT of pot holders in the practicing, but I am DETERMINED not to shop out my quilt tops! :)

Can I ask for advice, when you get to doing your post about the actual quilting of the quilt-a-long quilt, to include tips and tricks for managing the BULK of the entire quilt on a regular sewing machine? IE: Would it behoove me to get one of those clamp things that look like two PVC pipes inserted into one another, so as to roll up the quilt as I work, instead of just having a big, floppy mess at my side, hanging over the table, and dragging it all down? :)

I've been visiting your blog almost everyday for sometimes now.:) I really love your quilts and your Tute & quilt a long is really amazing. Make quilting more simpler than what I read in books..:D, think I will start your quilt along soon (better late than nevere, rite??;). I've done some "trial" with your quilt along blocks which turned out ok..Thanks a lot..

I'm participating in the quilt along, but I started late. Please add my name to the list, I will be posting pics of my finished blocks as soon as I get a chance.

Love your blog and your quilts!!

  21. The quilt looks wonderful.
If you lived closer we could exchange our quilts. I love to quilt straight lines. I hope to learn to meander quilt very very soon.

  22. I love this quilt. I may have to try for a ragged edge quilt some day too. I've seen another one with flowers, but I really like this one. Straight lines drive me crazy too. I have a quilt that is almost done, but I can't bring myself to quilt the last few blocks..

  23. man, you just pump them out! it is gorgeous, amanda jean!

  24. This quilt looks wonderful!! I was doing the quilt-a-long and then really behind, then pulled out my squares and fabric last weekend and was very unhappy with my use of scrap fabrics that I'm abandoning the project! I think I'd have been happier if I'd have purchased fabric to suit rather than going from my stash. So, I plan to actually do the stars quilt-a-long you have proposed, but will HAVE to buy fabric to suit. Sorry to have bailed on thise one!

  25. once again, your quilt is just gorgeous!

  28. Really nice quilt!

(About the quilt-a-long...do you mean the first one or the upcoming one? You're doing a second one, right? I would like to do that one...missed the first one.)

  29. Beautiful! Blue is my favourite colour and this looks so cozy with it's layers and raggy edges. I bet this quilt will only get lovelier with use.

I'm with you on preferring to quilt meandering lines rather than straight ones. Perhaps it's because I can hide any of my stitiching flaws more easily. ;o)

  33. Sorry, I found a typo and removed the comment. I will try again.

Another warm hug ready to make someone happy. I think the three layers would add warmth. I am not a big fan of cutting out the back parts even in appliqué.

My name does not appear but alas I am a tad late due to the broken wrist. It is on my agenda for the Quiltathon. That is why I saw the note. I went to your site to print the finishing instructions.

Also to note. I would like to use one of your blocks to make a quilt for Mama. Will that be acceptable?

  34. I am a newbie to your blog and a newbie to sewing. Your blog has given me tons of pointers. Hopefully, one day I will be able to make beautiful quilts like the one in this post. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of quilting. It is so helpful.

I love this blue one! Please add me to your list for the quilt-along. I am working on them, but am behind. I plan to try to catch up this week. Love your blog, thank you for your wonderful tutorials!

  39. Love it! Once upon a time ago, I was going to do this thecnique & then slice & dice it like a disappearing 9-patch, but....

After seeing this on finished, I may put that back on my list...

  40. I'm not on the list because I joined really late, but better late than never. Thanks so much for your comment on my quilt top. I will be machine quilting for the very first time on this top. I'm nervous, but excited. Again, thanks for the inspiration!

  41. Hmm I tried leaving a comment & apparently it didn't work... Oh well!

I was just going to say it looks lovely like all your quilts do:) I really like the raw edges on some of the squares.

Very nice - I love blue too! Is this done in flannels or regular fabrics? Such cool looking quilts you manage to turn out. Congrats!

I look forward to your tutorial on free-motion quilting. I'm a newbie on that one!

    BTW lovely quilt!!!

  44. I haven't started on the quilt along yet, I didn't find your blog until it was almost over, but I plan to start as soon as I get a chance. Does that count?

I have to say I like this green quilt better than the other one. I am not much of a green person either so I always struggle with things that are green. I do really like it now though. It's much more appealing to me.

I am glad you are feeling better about it also, and I also think it will be more fun if all of your monochromatic quilts aren't just alike.

Maybe you can do a blue log cabin next =0)

  45. Linda T-

this is done in regular quilting cottons, not flannel.

  47. I am attempting to do your quilt-a-long and I am not on your list. I also don't have a blog. I just found your blog towards the end and so I am WAY behind. But I was so intrigued that I jumped in anyway. I have only done very little quilting, mostly I sew garments. But I have been wanting to do some quilting and your quilt-a-long was the incentive I needed to start. Thank you for doing this.

  48. Oh my! I'm late to the party on this one ~ just found your blog today.
This quilt is PERFECTLY lovely! Everything about it! The color combo is one of my favorites. The ragged edges reminds me of a quilt that my great grandmother made - hers (now mine) is ragged from age & use.
Your blog is inspiring me to want to make more - quicker - ha! And I've only just started. One pot holder and one 'crib' quilt down (less the binding). Your work is wonderful! Thanks for sharing :)
