block of the week quilt

edit: the quilt is about a twin size

Marcia asked me if I could show a picture of the completed quilt-a-long quilt.

The quilt shown here was made from a block of the month program at my former local quilt shop a few years back. This is what I am basing the design of my 30's quilt-a-long project on. I will change several of the blocks to ones that are easier. (you can thank me later...some of these were buggers to piece!) I hesitate to show you the photo of this quilt, because I don't want to turn anyone off. The civil war fabrics aren't so much my style, but I really do like the quilt. And it does look better in person. I am excited to see how this quilt will look in 30's prints.

This is how I chose to put my 12 blocks together, but when you get your 12 blocks (or 24 blocks, for some of you) completed, you can arrange them any way you choose. Otherwise, I will walk you through the process to achieve something similar to this.

One reason I am enjoying this quilt-a-long so much, (besides the fact that you are joining me and are sharing in the excitement!), is because it is giving me a chance to explore how changing the fabric changes the quilt. This is something that I have wanted to explore for a long time now, but I am not really into making multiple quilts in the same pattern. {Unlike some people I know. :) } It will be so much fun to see how your fabric combinations come together, too.

Thanks, Marcia, for asking the question, so I had something to post about today. :)

Oh how lovely to see the finished quilt. I've been finishing up a few Chistmas presents before I started on mine...now I'm thinking a trip to the fabric shop maybe required!

    2 questions...

Will this come out as a twin, full, queen size or other?

And (I'm whining now) do we have to cut all those thousands of squares around the edge for the border? Yours looks beautiful- but I may not make not have the strength/attention span to go that extra mile.

Again, thank you so much for your helpful help!

  8. Okay, a little overwhelming, but really really pretty. Thanks for dumbing it down for us a little!! :)

  9. Thanks Amandajean for showing the completed quilt. I’m glad you did, now I’m even more thrilled and can better picture what fabrics I will choose for coming blocks!! I won’t make 24 now that I’ve seen this. It’s good/big enough for me!

  10. Thanks for giving us an idea. I was contemplating making two of each block...glad I didn't, it looks good sized. I'm using the Moda Chocolate for mine, but would love to see it with retro fabrics. So many possibilities. I might make a whole other quilt just using my favorite two blocks. I love the border on your quilt. It's wonderful being able to check in and see what everyone else is doing. Can't wait to see them all completed. Thanks so much Amandajean.

  11. I'm so glad that you chose to show the finished quilt. I was having a hard time imagining all of the blocks looking good together.

  12. Isn't it strange how our fabric tastes change? It should be interesting to see it with new fabrics, and everyone else's interpretations. I love the 3rd block from the left in the top row.

  13. Thanks for showing us where we're heading and thanks for replacing some of those tricky looking blocks. (whew!) I'm enjoying seeing the blocks everyone is making, knowing that the finished quilts will be beautiful.

Thanks again for leading us onward in all this quilting fun!

The quilt looks lovely. I've only been to a few Quilt shops in the USA - due to the fact that my trips are usually quick - over and back in a week. But I have been to Grubers! What a great store!

That quilt is GORGEOUS!!!! I finished my first block, and I've cut out most of the squares for the second one. Life is too busy. Why can't we just sew all day with no other worries? LOL! I'll post my photos to the Flickr pool, and on my blog when I do my next update! Thanks for sharing! What size is this finished quilt? I think I want to make mine bigger so it can cover even big guys up on a cold night!

Thanks for the tutorial, I am off to find my fabric. Just a quick question, what batting do you use. Thanks

  18. anonymous,
for batting I like to use warm and natural. it's avaliable at JoAnn's and many other places as well.

  19. I use Warm and Natural batting too. I like the way it washes up. I like the "difficult" squares in this quilt. Are you going to do those later? Like maybe in March when I am crazy enough to go along with it? Winter gets long here ya know! Heeheehe...
