Welcome to finish it up Friday!
I had very little sewing time this week, so all I managed to finish is these three pincushions. I guess that's better than nothing!
The black and white pincushion was made from scraps leftover from piecing my kindness pillow top. The other two were made from patchwork pieces that were floating around in my orphan block pile. At least they are usable items now! I think they make pretty cute pincushions.
I've also put my favorite tools for making pincushions in the photo. The first is invisible thread. It's a bugger to work with, because it's basically clear, but it makes the hand stitched opening almost invisible. It's amazing! A needle minder is essential because both needles and invisible thread are really, really hard to keep track of. My other favorite tool is a bamboo point turner. (Made by Merchant and Mills. I purchased mine at Modern Textiles.) It's such a handy tool for turning out the corner of tiny pieces like this. I would highly recommend it!
Since pincushions are the topic of the day, I thought it would be fun to do a giveaway, too! If you would like to win a PDF copy of my Plenty of Pincushion Patterns, Volume 1 and 2, please leave me a comment in this post. In your comment, I'd love to hear if you have sewing plans this weekend. If so, what do you plan to make? I'll pick a few winners tomorrow morning. If you win, perhaps you can make a few pincushions before the weekend is through. :)
edited to add: the giveaway is now closed, winners have been posted.
Now, it's your turn! Please link up your finishes for the week. Thank you, as always, for joining me for finish it up Friday!
Your pincushions are so beautiful. I love your scrappy projects!
ReplyDeleteI just love all of your pincushions!!! I have made 1 and every time I see all of yours it makes me want to make a whole lot more than 1 :)
ReplyDeleteSo cute! You're so good with scraps. And the photographs are just delicious!
ReplyDeleteSo cute! For this weekend, I plan to work on quilting my Park Bench quilt - it's taking forever, and I just want to finish at this point!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely adore your pin cushions! I haven't made any yet, but on my list of things to do this year is to make a whole bunch to give as gifts for the ladies in my stitching group. I certainly have the scraps and your pictures for inspiration. Maybe I'll even be able to make several extra and start my own "bowl of pin cushions" like you've done. I think that's such a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI've been sitting with my granddaughter this week while she has been recovering from a horrible cold/cough. Looking forward to being in my sewing room and hearing the purr of my machine. I'll grab one of several in-progress projects and sew to my hearts content.
ReplyDeleteI love that black and white one. I hope to finish up a scrap quilt from more orphan blocks this weekend. They go pretty fast because most of the work is already done. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteYour pin cushions are always so cute. I can't pick a favorite.
ReplyDeleteOh I would love to win this pattern! I plan on making a bunch of slab blocks this weekend because I'm making The Missing U quilt from your book Sunday Morning Quilts. :-)
ReplyDeleteYour pin cushions are so cute and functional. I am interested in your books not only for the great, fun ideas, but also for your suggestions on fillings. That seems to be what is holding me back and I'm sure you have a lot of good suggestions.
ReplyDeleteI love that even without a lot of sewing time you manage to get even a little something done, Amanda! I am making pouches this weekend for my daughter for her birthday. Again, a small project but one I know I can complete in a weekend! Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI hope to get some sewing in amongst the birthday/party sleepover events. I'd love to finish my "be kind" mini.
ReplyDeleteI'll be working on pillows for Hospice.
ReplyDeleteI've finished the blocks for a lap quilt and am now sewing the rows. I like when I get to this part because I can see the quilt top coming together.
ReplyDeletePincushions are great fillers to make when you have a few moments. I am working furiously on Love Entwined for my appliqué fix and Austin Bluebird for piecing.
ReplyDeleteI'm finishing up some quilts for the upcoming Stunning Stars series on my blog! Good thing it's too gray and cold to go outside today! Thanks for the chance at winning a copy of your patterns!!
ReplyDeleteSo sweet! Thanks for all the Inspiration!
ReplyDeleteYes, I hope to do some sewing this weekend! Not sure what, though - I am tempted to start a new project (new year, new project, right?), but I have several WIPs that should get some attention, too. Love your pincushion patterns!
ReplyDeleteHi! This weekend I hope to finish up the remaining churn dash blocks for the Jenn Kingwell "Long time gone" pattern and hopefully finish free-motion quilting a 3 year old WIP!
ReplyDeletePlanning to finish quilting 4 more baby quilts for charity. Hopefully I'll also be able to quilt a tiny doll quilt for myself so that I have a hand work binging to turn during tv time!
ReplyDeleteYour quilting inspires me. I love your use of colour! I will be making 35 nine patches for a mystery quilt and skyping with my buddy. We both get to sew in our own sewing rooms, but together. We can even sew in our pajamas if we want to!
ReplyDeleteWhile I wish I could say that I was going to finish a quilt this weekend, I really need to hem some jeans before I go on a trip (and it wouldn't be bad to attack the ever growing mending stack)
ReplyDeleteI wrote to you a while back asking if you would do a tutorial showing how to close the edge of pincushions without it looking mangled (mine always do). You answered you might do one later. I think you just gave me the secret, invisible thread. Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteMy sewing for the weekend will hopefully include getting caught up on the blocks for the Pat Sloan Solstice Challenge. Thanks for the chance to win. momoftana at yahoo dot com
I'm hoping to get a king sized commissioned quilt top finished this weekend. And maybe if I stay on task, I'll get to plan and shop for a new quilt! 😊
ReplyDeleteRecently I've gotten out of the habbit of quilting and started altering clothes! It's fun. And it's probably a phase. Love the pincushions!
ReplyDeleteI love seeing all you pincushions. You inspired me this Christmas to make pincushions for my friends. I just came back from a quilting retreat, so my sewing this weekend will be finishing off the quilt tops that I started in my two classes.
ReplyDeleteYour pin cushions are such fun! I have plans to make sandwich wraps and snack bags this weekend. We gave up plastic a year ago and I have three little girls whose lunches I pack. I love getting the chance to use my fabric in a sustainable way that brings some fun and color to their lunches. 🙂
ReplyDeleteYour pin cushions are always so fun and colourful !
ReplyDeleteLove your many pincushions! I would so love to fill a big jar with pincushions made from all your patterns. They're like little poofy fairy pillows. My plans for this weekend unfortunately do not include sewing. It's a weekend for planning, list-making, intensive cleaning, and yard clean-up. I may not survive.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to my quilt guild meeting this afternoon and I'll be cutting HSTs for a new Kaffe quilt tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI am planning on finishing a quilt for my son's school band fundraiser. It is a grey, black and beige jelly roll type quilt - all strips are cut 3 x 9 and you just keep sewing them together.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy your project posts and am loving the pincushions. I have just got a new machine so am planning some mini projects to familiarise myself with it...your pincushions are the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThanks
Planning on finishing up some Pokemon placemats for the kids - they are still messy with syrup so we wash a lot =)
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend to you!!
I never thought of using invisible thread for that! Great idea!! I DO have some pincushions ready to sew together. You can never have enough, but first I must finish quilting my Easy As Pie quilt for my bed. ( 5th one of that pattern - thank you, Amanda!!!) It's just such an easy one! This one uses Quilter's Dream Request, as someone recommended on IG. I am anxious to see how I like it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway!!!!😊
I'm hoping to finish stitching up a scrappy quilt made from orphan blocks this weekend. I love your pincushion ideas; thanks for the giveaway!

ReplyDeleteLove the blog!
I love seeing all your pincushions! I will have to try incorporating orphan block leftovers, seems like a good way to use them. I haven't sat down at my machine since before Christmas (eek!) but I'm hoping I'll get a chance to make some bee blocks this weekend. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI would love to win a copy of your pincushion patterns. My sewing plans for this weekend is to work on my Splendid Sampler quilt.

I'm hoping to finish putting a baby quilt top together. The blocks are all done so I just need to add sashing and borders. Love your pincushions!
ReplyDeleteI always love seeing your pin cushions. I'm sooo behind in my sewing that I'll be burning the midnight oil all weekend long. A quilt, a stuffy, 20 essential oil wraps, and project quilting starts another challenge on Sunday.
ReplyDeleteYour pin cushions are always so cute!
ReplyDeleteYour pincushions are always "squeal worthy." I am basting today so I can get some of my quilt tops quilted over the weekend.
ReplyDeleteLove your pincushions. I am hoping to work on a Carolyn Friedlander quilt I am making for a friend.
ReplyDeleteA giveaway--Yay! I'm just so impressed at your sticktuitiveness with regards to reducing your WIP pile, but you had to go and enable the rest of us to start new pincushion projects :) This weekend I will be working on a couple of flannel dog coats for my pugzu Milo. I'm sure you understand that a little naked dog and a Maine winter don't go well together!
ReplyDeleteI hope to cut out a couple of dresses for my granddaughters, but I don't know if I'll get them sewn. Love the pincushions!
ReplyDeleteNo sewing plans for this weekend but I have plenty of sewing projects that need attention! I'd love to win your books, thanks for the chance!!
ReplyDeleteI'm working on an equilateral triangle quilt as a surprise 18th birthday present for my daughter. I have a lot tiny scraps that would be ideal for pin cushions! Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteannamariehlustik@googlemail.com
Isn't it fun to use those last little scraps? I'm workin on a back for a quilt trying to use all my leftover pieces. But it got set aside so I could finish my Jan. UFO. I only have 10 French Roses blocks left of 72 and I can put it together.
ReplyDeleteI hope to get a quilt for my soon-to-be-born granddaughter quilted this weekend. It all depends on whether I can shake off this cold! If not, I'll be lounging on the couch - again! *sigh*
ReplyDeleteLove those. I'm headed to winter quiltfest!! Looking forward to my first quilt retreat :D
ReplyDeleteI always give a little squeal when I see another set of your beautiful pincushions ! The black and white one is definitely my favorite from this set. Hoping to work on my Irish chain quilt I started a year ago this weekend - wish me luck. royalquilter7(at)gmail.com
ReplyDeleteThank you for introducing me to the concept of a needle minder - I need this in my life! Tomorrow I'm starting on my pattern for a Marilyn Monroe replica dress. I've been thinking about this project for months so it's time to dive in at last! Thanks for your awesome blog!

ReplyDeleteThis weekend I am finishing a quilt for a friend who is retiring. Also on my list is to make a pin cushion so winning your pattern would come in handy! Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteLove your scrappy pincushions. Might be just what I need to do to use up some of my orphan pieces!
ReplyDeleteI always love your pincushions. I especially enjoyed following your progress when you made one every day for a month. My quilty plans for the weekend include finishing three "we care" quilt tops. I am working with some beautiful and bright fabrics that simply chase away the winter blahs with their cheerfulness.
ReplyDeleteLovely pincushions again! This weekend I will be attempting two little fabric birds to go on top of my wedding cake. One will be dressed in a veil. The other (all being well) will be wearing a kilt.... Fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteScottish Jen

Anyway, not planning any sewing projects this weekend.
If all goes well, I will finish the last of the Beta costumes and deliver them by Monday. Otherwise, it's a busy weekend with very little sewing.
ReplyDeleteI've become a pincushion princess. You know, one of those people who make pincushions just because. Yep, that's me. Thanks to you, Her Highness Pincushion. Your pincushions have me making pincushions. They are just too sweet to quit.
I love your tiny precious pincushions. I well be finishing the scrappy borders of a Crumb quilt. It is a first try for me and I am happy with it. All from my stash and my scraps and crumbs were not diminished nearly enough. So there will be more scrappyness in the future. I am drooling over your birches pattern. It is next on my list to order...new month, new SS check!! haha!
ReplyDeleteUgh. I started cleaning out my sewing room, and kept running across pieces of flannel and half-finished pairs of pajama pants. So---I have been trying to work on them everyday and get them finished up so I can move onto something else. My quilt guild is having a selvedge challenge this year, so I want to make SOTAK's "Lola" pouch out of selvedge and Essex linen. I love to work with selvedge, but it is time-consuming.
ReplyDeleteWould love to win the pincushion books. I plan to sew this weekend. I am working on my annual Mystery Saturday Quilt that I teach each year on the Saturday before Halloween. Love having really cold weather and snow so I have an excuse to stay in and sew. Paula in KY
ReplyDeleteI plan to make progress on a half square rectangle quilt. The blocks are small and require such careful trimming in order to avoid a hot wonky mess. Nobody told me HRT's were so hard. They look so simple😬.
ReplyDeleteNo sewing for me this weekend but, I'll be gathering for the pj sale retreat next weekend!
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda! I am an on-going mitten finisher-upper But this weekend I want to make one of your pincushions for a mitten-making friend of mine! Miss you, friend❤️

ReplyDeleteI love pin cushions and would love to see a mini one which could go in my needle holder. Yes, I have plans to sew with my mini-group tomorrow. Once a month we meet on a Sat. at someone's home and sew. The host provides space (tables, ext. cords, drinks, and sometimes a snack) and everyone comes prepared to sew by hand or machine. Each person brings their own lunch so breaking for lunch is fast so we can spend 4-5 hours sewing. Thanks for the idea of using clear thread for closing the seams on pin cushions. I'll try it next time..
ReplyDeleteYou inspired me to try a pin cushion and I can see how having that wooden thingy would be a big help. I would definitely get one ready for you if I won your pattern. Thanks for the chance to win. I don't have the courage to use the invisible thread though.

ReplyDeleteThose pincushions are always so adorable. I have had a a bamboo point turner in my sewing kit forever, fantastic tool. Have a great weekend and love ALL your pincushions. I would love to try making some for granddaughters school bazaar.
ReplyDeleteMy weekend sewing plans including finishing a bright and sassy quilt top for a friend and cutting out a fun Violette Field Threads dress pattern for a deserving little girl. My rule of thumb is to not make sewing plans as something always goes awry and then my plans don't come to fruition! LOL, that's all okay as it all eventually gets done.
ReplyDeleteYou've turned me into a pincushion addict. Can't stop making them and I love your style!

ReplyDeleteI'm using fabric that was left over from a quilt I made for my sister last year.
I know I'll end up with some scraps that'll be perfect for making your beautiful pincushions!
I am going to pickup my machine from its check up. I sew so much it goes in about every 6-9 months. When I get home it will be back to a t-shirt quilt. Love your pincushions and will probably buy the patterns if I don't win.
ReplyDeletePincushion cuteness!
ReplyDeleteBusy weekend with no sewing time, though I did finish up a table runner last night.
Thanks for the giveaway!
I need to finish the Valentine pillow cover for my daughter's family this weekend. Love the pincushions!
ReplyDeleteI'm probably too late to enter, but I'm working on a pinwheel design throw. It's crisp, and pretty, need to choose a fabric for the binding.
ReplyDeleteI keep meaning to make at least one pincushion, but somehow my other projects keep taking precedence. This weekend I will be finishing the hand sewing of the binding on a lap quilt for my daughter, who just moved.
ReplyDeleteI hope to make some progress on Bonnie Hunter's En Provence MQ. I only have one pincushion and I am constantly moving it from room to room, or bagging it up to take to a class or other sewing opportunity. I definitely need more. poladydwd(at)yahoo(dot)com
ReplyDeleteI have more pincushions than I will ever use (even though I somehow misplace them). I do love to make them when I just want TO MAKE something but don't feel like thinking anything out. Even my friends who don't sew have some of my cute pincushions. I have made red hats, ten gallon hats, shoes, birds, frogs, turtles and many others out of felt. Some are so cute they don't need to be pincushions, they are just art. I am taking radiation treatments that are kicking my butt, and then caught a nasty respiratory infection (because my immune system is all haywire), so pincushions are a good option right now. I have been making breast cancer awareness key fobs and donating them to my oncology center on the embroidery machine also. Those of you that machine embroider know that sitting by the machine while IT sews is a must, so I can make pincushions by hand while I wait. A win-win. Good luck on the give-away everyone! And thanks for the give-away.
ReplyDeleteI plan to work on a rag quilt for a baby boy who's expected in March. But I could definitely find time to work on a cute pincushion too!
ReplyDeleteI will have the whole afternoon to work on my Tula Pink/your good neighbors fabrics project. Earlier this month I started to make each of her 100 modern blocks with the 10 inch block sets of your fabrics I bought through connecting threads. It has been fun putting them together in different combinations and making blocks I've never done before. Only problem is I get sidetracked when I like a block and then decide to make a whole project from one of the blocks.
ReplyDeleteI made a beautiful bag for my daughter for Christmas. It had mermaids, and a bunch of sea creatures. It was in her car and her car got stolen - yes with the bag! She was in tears that she lost her 'Christmas' gift from me. So I made another one with beautiful Kaffee fabrics and I'm finishing it up this weekend for her. I love your little pin cushions and don't know how you manage to do more in one of your 'off' days than I do normally. I'd love to do some of your pincushions!
ReplyDeleteI have severe pin cushion envy, they are so cute. I was aiming to continue my scrappy EPP plus quilt this weekend, but the surprise arrival of my first grandchild put paid to that. I'll just have time to bind the Elephant Parade I made for her before flying from New Zealand to Houston TX to meet her. Thankfully I can stitch on the 15 hour flight to help pass the time.
ReplyDeleteI love all your pincushions. They are just the cutest. Thanks for sharing all the fun going on in your sewing room.
ReplyDeleteI have been making pincushions from scraps after being inspired by your first posts showing the cute basket of pincushions you kept for sewing buddies. I use walnut shells to fill the pincushions and love your tip about using invisible thread to close them. I also use a small piece of batting to tuck in around the shells in the opening before stitching shut to hold them in while I stitch. My favorite one that I have made was tiny 1/2" hexies from gifted Liberty scraps on Essex linen. It was a special gift to the person who gave me the scraps. I am sewing a Fancy Fox quilt. This weekend I am working on the Bunny blocks.
