finish it up Friday, 12/14/12

Welcome to finish it up Friday!

I'm happy to report that I finished up my drano quilt yesterday. I LOVE THIS QUILT!
 It's big! Measures 69" x 96".
The pattern is a traditional one called steps to the alter. Katy did a quilt along on her blog a few years back, so if you want to make one of your own (and I think you should!) you can find the directions here.
I threw it on my daughter's bed this morning for photos. I think it would be happy living here. (Although I do not think that will happen!)
I love that there is such a variety of scraps in this quilt...good, bad and ugly. It somehow all works wonderfully. I love the black diamond squares that give the eye a place to rest. Kind of.
I used a simple black and white striped binding to finish it off...
...which ties in the backing quite nicely.

Speaking of the backing...I toiled over what to put on the back. I pieced a whole back out of fat quarters that I had in my stash because I didn't want to buy anything new for this quilt.
I kind of liked it-it felt campy and fun-but it wasn't quite the right match.
So I went back to the drawing board and ended up piecing it with some newly purchased fabric (the red and black) and a bit from my stash (the grey and white). I'm very happy with the outcome.
I quilted it with straight lines using my new Janome horizon. It was so fun! That thing straight line stitches like a dream. No shifting or pulling whatsoever and not a pucker in sight. Woo-hoo! (you can also see more quilting detail in the photo above.)
I'm considering using this quilt for temporary wall art behind my couch. I think it fills up that blank space perfectly. :)
I've heard that these things are addictive. I can testify to that. I'm thinking of starting another...

How about you? Have you a finish to share today? If so, please link up. Thanks for joining me for finish it up Friday! Have a good one!

  30. I love this quilt! I agree that the black gives the eyes somewhere to rest and brings it all together. I really want to make one myself, but I am not allowed until I finish up my scrappy hexagon quilt...which will be never.

  33. Love the quilt. I so want to share a finish with everyone, but I am afraid my niece might read my blog and spoil her Christmas gift. I made her a quilt out of her soccer and hockey jeresys. I will post in about it in a couple weeks.

  36. This is another great quilt you have here! I would love to make one of this quilt someday.. I have keep a box of scraps that cut into 1.5"x1.5" over the years now. I am thinking a stamp quilt. Maybe in another year or two I can start making it. Will keep this quilt inspiration for now..:)

  46. Oh, Amanda Jean, it's lovely! I had actually been wondering about your quilt this week, as I've been working on my own "small squares" quilt. I thought, "I still have a chance to finish mine before hers--I've only been working on it for nearly two years!" But alas, you beat me. Ha.

So excited for you. Love the black in it. Adds even more dimension!

  54. I have a question. How many fat quarters did it take to make the backing you almost used? I ask because I'm considering the doing the same thing but don't want "ruin " a pack of them if I don't have enough?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Why do you call it the "Drano" quilt? Sorry if you've already answered that question. : )

    ReplyDelete
  56. Farm Road Ramblings,

Why the name drano? It started as a spin off Victoria's (bumblebeans)Everything but the Kitchen Sink quilt (which is amazing!)A friend and I were talking about how funny it would be to make a drano quilt...you know, a quilt that would use all the junk that would normally go down the drain, so to speak...and then i just HAD to do it. and of course the name drano stuck! (yes, it's a bit wacky...but i'd do it all over again. :) )

    Hope that makes sense!

  57. I finished 3 before the end of the year *happy dance* a baby quilt for my niece out of 2.5inch blocks and shades of pink scraps I had in my stash, made in to tiny 9patches. One in shades of purple 5 inch blocks my boyfriend bought and added some lavender scraps I had, which is slightly larger than a lap quilt. Both for Christmas! And a kingsized one for bf , top is all made from old feedsacks in muslin sacks and differnt patterns of blue sacks made in to pinwheels. I love it! I haven't given it to him yet bc I've. Been sleeping with it haha not sure how to add the pictures here with a linky. But ill figure it out :) I love the drano quilt Its amazing! The border makes it all come together.
