switching things up

Over the weekend we decided to do some shuffling in our house. My middle son is getting his own room for the first time ever. It's very exciting! But to do that I'm giving up my craft room. My new space will be in the basement. We joke that at least our basement will finally get used now. Joking aside...it's so true!
This week's task will be settling in and making sense of all my crap stuff! I hope it only takes a week. That's probably wishful thinking!
I've got lots of stuff that still needs to find a home....either here or elsewhere. I so need to purge!
I've found a home for some of my stuff already. My long term goal is to be able to fit most if not all of my supplies in this closet. (Are you laughing along with me yet?)
I can see some painting in my future, too. Those blue walls have to go...along with the brass sconces. I'm not sure how it's all going to come together yet, but I'm looking forward to a cozy new work space. Hopefully sooner rather than later...because I have a lot of fabric to sew up! :)

Happy Monday to you!

  1. Oh boy! Quite a task ahead of you! My hubs was in my sewing room the other day laughing about how we're going to house all of my stuff when we finally put our house up for sale. Don't know where it's all going to go!

  2. Have fun getting settled. Sometimes the process seems neverending, but it is always such a good feeling when you've sorting thru everything and know where everything is!

  3. Good luck. I'm not one for rearranging furniture but I do rearrange rooms. It's a good way to look through your stuff again and the process of getting settled is daunting but worth it.

Haha! I rearranged my sewing room this weekend (but thankfully didn't have to entirely move it)! My task still isn't finished yet though either. Be encouraged...you CAN do it! ;) Enjoy your new space. It will be nice and cozy in the winter months for sure!

  5. Yay for change! Enjoy the process, even though it will be a lot of work. I made the same move a couple of weeks ago. Our family room was being totally ignored and so I decided to claim it. Lots of organizing but I'm LOVING my new space! It's here if you want a peek (I'd love a visit!)...

  6. you might find things you have forgotten about - it is good to go through things once in awhile

  7. What a big job but it will be such a nice area for sewing when you finish!

  8. A ton of work, but what fun to re-do! My craft room gets a do-over this week as well ... I'm actually looking forward to seeing everything again ;-). Good Luck!

  9. Oh, good luck!! You might try putting a few quilts up on the walls until you have time to paint - it will make it lovely bright and cheerful!! Enjoy your new space - both the organizing and once you get to use it!!

  10. I've moved so many times, I really do feel your pain! I do love that you have a metal wash tub full of fabric!

  11. You're a good mama. :) Nothing like a good craft-room-move to realize how much fabric you have - happened to me earlier this year. Yikes. All the more motivation to start using it, right? ;) Have fun!

  12. How exciting to get a new studio and to get to decide which ideas to keep and which ones to modify.
A huge amount of work, but it will be worth it.
And, I'm hoping your new room will inspire me to do something about my own sewing room, which I've not been using much lately because it makes me feel so isolated--which is totally illogical since I'm alone in the house when I do most of my quilty stuff anyway!

  13. How exciting for everyone! AND he will ALWAYS remember you gave up your sewing room for him. I did fabric purging last week--found someone that wanted anything I had. My Word! It was wonderful for me and she was thrilled!

Looks like a big job, make it fun! Will be watching as you go along on the process.

  15. Jealous! Living in California means no basement. I would love to have one to call my own!! haha- I'm sure the kids would love a basement to take over also. Have fun-- sounds like a good project for while they are away at school. :)

  16. whoa big job! But at least you do have a space to call your own. Check out the wire drawer system from IKEA. I LOVE how I can see my fabric and sort by colors. And the best part -- they stack :-) They are much cheaper at IKEA then at Home Depot.

  17. I would love to come help you get organized!! Too bad I'm not closer. I just reconfigured by sewing room over the weekend, purging as I went. I must have gotten rid of enough stuff because I feel a huge weight lifted from the process. Hopefully you will feel the same when you are done.

  18. Always a good way to find out exactly what you have in your stash. Nice big space. Cool!

  19. I smell a destash! Alas, I usually miss good destashes, given that all the stuff seems to disappear in mere moments.

I am anxious to see your new space evolve into something organized and comfortable. I think it makes for such happy sewing that way. :-)

  20. I know how that task goes! I've been cleaning up my craft space as I have to turn that room into a nursery for my little one (due in November). Fortunately, there are two closets in there, but it's amazing what you find in your stash once you start looking...wishing you lots of luck and hoping you love your new space! :)

  21. I'm with Amy on this one....just built a Martha Stewart craft table, so now I'm realizing all my fabric treasures, too.
So far it's kept me from making a couple of impulse fabric buys, but we'll see how long that lasts!

  22. Just so you know, I fully support you craftily purging!!

If anything needs to find a good home, mine is available!! LOL

  23. Wow good luck with it all! Hope you find the space and storage you need =D

  24. WooHoo! Now you'll have a dungeon just like me! It's not so bad -- I've found that you can create wonderful things anywhere as long as you have your basics. Have Fun!

  25. Wow...at least your basement is finished! You can have a great design wall but your big splurge should be on good lighting so you don't feel like you are in a basement!:)
I am very jealous of your closet!

I bet your son is estatic to have a place to call his own...good job mama!!:)

  26. What fun!! I bet you find lots of lost or forgotten about stuff.

  27. I miss having a craft room! I gave mine up when I got pregnant. :)

  28. Oh how funny, I've spent today re-arranging my craftroom/the kids playroom, too! We turned the garage into "house", so it's our big 'playroom'. I've been feeling a bit guilty about hogging it, so switching things around so there's space for my husband's ping-pong table. It's working quite nice, lots of tubs fit under there AND it's a huge table/workspace! :) Can't wait to see yours finished, sounds like fun!

  29. Did you hear me snort when I read that you will try to get all your stuff in that closet? Best wishes on that one!

  30. Good chance to "re-gift" all those things you don't use all the time.
donate to your local guild, there's bound to be some beginner quilter who could use some help!

  31. A lot of work, but kind of exciting, too. Hey, didn't you just remodel this sewing room for yourself (painting and all)?! Well, it's nice of you to share with your son. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Too bad your not my sister...II would come and help you organize. Hmmmm, so you're re-organizing your house.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Having it all organized and "purged" will feel so good! But I know it's a lot of work to get there. You can do it! May you pick the best things to keep and be able to let the rest go. :)

  34. Just be glad it isn't a "spooky" basement like ours! Totally unfinished with lots of spiders! :)

  35. I love the looks of your space so far. I especially love the sideboard. If you find you have lots of extras and nowhere to put them....please send them to my house. I would LOVE them. Nancy

  36. Wow! Lucky boy. And so soon after you did all that work.
Are you in the workout area or K's office?

  37. good luck with it. Glance at photos in Google Images for ideas. I to that all the time and get great inspiration for my own spaces.

  38. Good luck! I "cleaned" up my sewing room (dining room). Still need to finish up the loose ends and am wishing I had better storage options, more room, extra space...lol

  39. What a big project! I gave up my sewing room, which was a large bedroom, to my growing son and took his tiny bedroom. Lets just say not everything fit! I ended up remodeling his new bedroom before he moved in - stipped wallpaper off the ceiling and wall, torn out a makeshift closet and added two nice ones, stripped paint off all the woodwork, then repainted everything, wallpapered., and added new carpet. Hopefully for you just a new coat of paint and some updated lighting will get the new studio into shape. I will be looking forward to seeing the room as it progresses!

  40. I'm LOVING that quilt top that's folded on the back of that blue chair in the last pic!!

    It's lovely!

  41. Whoo, lots of work ahead! I'll make you a deal: you come help me organize my basement sewing room & then I'll help you with yours! I've got a humongous closet and 3 dressers and it's still a wreck!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Since I have considerably more crap....I mean stuff, than you do, I will judge not!
The best part of moving your stuff is the fun of reorganizing it!!!! I love to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  43. The things we do for love!!! You know I did it recently too for my son. I am not totally moved in and that is good. I'm hoping that I'll glean some ideas from you about room layout. So get busy! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Good luck with the organizing of a new space. And with the purge. I am not good at purging my stuff. If it doesn't belong to me, or isn't sewing/crafting related I can toss it without a thought. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  45. Plenty to do when you move a whole room. It might have been easier for one of your son's to move into my extra bedroom, but you would have missed each other. By the way, did you move the buffet?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Are you having fun finding a place for everything yet?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Sounds like a big work!Hope you enjoy!Have fun!

  48. I wish I had a room to craft! And I wish I had the stuff you had to purge! Jealous jealous jealous!!!!

  49. These photos are the sign of a true artist. My sewing room gets into all sorts of distress when I'm in the midst of a project. When I can't stand it any longer, I clean it up. Puring should be in my future, though....

  50. I just read your post and I am going through the same. My son just turned 16 and it was decided he needed his own room, so my craft room is now needing a new home. Oh boy.. where to begin. I must do it quickly, I have until 9/30.

    ReplyDelete
  51. That is a huge task, wish you a lot of success! I found that using plastic containers with lids, so you can pile them on top of each other, will get you so much more storing space! If you leave the locks open, you can easily lift the lid of the bottom container to put something in.

please post before, during, after photos! btw picked up your sunday morning quilts book and finally read it cover to cover - fabulous ideas, thanks!!

  53. Good luck setting up your basement! I am in the basement too. I actually really like it. For once in all the houses we have lived in all my sewing stuff is out of sight if you are above ground. That is quite liberating for me. When I come to the basement I am coming to work.

Good luck! Yes I'm laughing with you trying to fit everything in one closet, haha. But you just did up your craftroom! I remember reading about it in the not too distant past. Hope it's not hurting too much to give it up. sarahleighATinternodeDOTonDOTnet
