quilts of 2009

the links to each specific quilt are here

Happy New Year, friends! I really like the new year. It's a good time to reflect on the past year and to look forward to what's ahead.

Looking back....
You know you made a lot of quilts when you can barely fit them into one mosaic.
I finished a total of 44 quilts last year. I'll be the first to admit: that. is. insane. If I weren't me, I don't think I'd like me very much. :)

Looking ahead....
This was a very hard decision to make, but this will be my last post on crazymomquilts. When I started this blog I had no idea where it would lead. It's been an amazing journey that has been exhilarating at times. It has provided me opportunities that I never would have dreamed of: working with moda on the bakeshop, being published, and teaching at a retreat in CO. It has also been a lot of work. Anyone who keeps a blog knows what I'm talking about. It's been such a big part of my life for over 3 years, but I know that it's time for me to move on. My husband and I joke that I am resigning from my full time unpaid position as quilt blogger, but that's what it feels like. I'm not sure what I'm going to do next, but I am excited about what's ahead. It really is bittersweet.

A few notes of business to wrap up...

I have closed my P.O. Box, so anything that has been mailed to me at that address will be forwarded to me, but it is no longer my current address.

I had many questions about the tide is high/lazy summer days quilt pattern. I haven't decided for certain yet, but I may share the instructions for the quilt over on flickr sometime after January 31.

I plan to keep my blog up as is as a resource. I'm not sure for how long, but I guess at this time, indefinitely.

I still plan to post my quilts on my flickr account.

So, for one last time...thank you for reading. thank you for commenting. thank you for being a part of my life. it means so much. big huge hugs to you.

Thanks so much for all the inspiration, tips, and tutorials. When I decided to try quilting, the internet was my first resource, and your blog was the first thing I found. I was so excited to see all your quilts and ideas and especially the how-tos. You took the intimidation out of quilting for me! Thank you so much! Wishing you all the best.

aj, thank you so much for your blog! Yours was the very first blog I followed. Because of you, I actually started a blog (which has only 16 entries - LOL - but I post quilts as I finish them). Because of you, I use Warm & White batting. Because of you, I bought a Juki and LOVE it. I thought it a huge accomplishment that I finished 4 quilts this year, which was a record for me. And, because of you, I now follow several other quilting blogs, so even though I am sad that you will no longer blog, I have so many great resources to go to for inspiration. I totally understand why you need to move on - the amount of time and effort you and other quilting bloggers put into your blogs is amazing! So, I say thank you from the bottom stitches of my heart and I wish you the best and biggest blessings in 2010 and beyond. You have been a huge blessing to me!

(((hugs)))

Just a quick additional thought,

Have you seen the www.posterous.com blogger? It enables you to post items there and push it to other sites, such as flickr. Additionally you could transfer all this wonderful information from this site to that one. I just converted my blog to that site from blogspot. It all moved over perfectly, tags and pictures and everything. You could just post your pictures of your quilts there? Just a thought>>

Christmas 2008 was when I first found you. I wanted to try stippling for the first time. I bought several books but still didn't feel confident to try it. My husband told me to try googling "how to stipple" and your blog was one that popped up. Reading your blog and watching your video gave me the confidence. Since finding you I've been a loyal reader. I woke up this morning and read your blog. I'm sorry to hear that you are retiring from blogging. I'm also excited for you. Good luck. - Shelley from New Mexico -

thanks for sharing your talent with us! I've been inspired by your work and will benefit from all your work shared! My nieces and I just this last weekend were so awed looking at all your quilts that we decided to make doll quilts together that day. 5 doll quilts later I think they may all turn into quilters someday as they were touched by the whole experience of putting a quilt together! Thanks for the inspiration :) May Jesus bless you in your new endeavors.

Hi there

You don't know me at all - I live in Vancouver Canada and started quilting this year. I can't even sew, but a friend said try it. I was smitten and yours is the only blog I bookmarked and visited every day. I followed your tutorials and made my first queen size quilt using one of your blocks (faked it from thereon). I also made your ragged square quilt and it worked out great. In short, I learned almost everything from you and a couple of girlfriends, and along the way made more friends. But it was thanks to you I did it at all in the end.

I kinda thought you sounded like ou needed a break - blogging is hard work! I have a web site that assists people wanting to immigrate to Canada and I also do it for nothing. It takes hours and I don't even have small kids!

So I wanted to say a big THANK YOU. You gave me a gift that will be with me for years, truly you did. And I have never posted on someone else's blog, but I felt I had to let you know your generous blogging meant (and still means) a ton to me.

Good luck with your new ventures, whatever they turn out to be.

Penny

Well I'm stunned! You can't really quit, can you? Isn't there some blog law or something that say you can only quit if it's a unanimous decision? I think so...and I vote no. Take a few days off...a week...okay two...but then come back...please?! I have loved seeing your creative mind at work, even though I'm not a frequent commenter. Okay, I've rethought my idea - take 3 full months off and then come back on April 1st. That's my final offer! And if you're REALLY CRAZY and decide truly not to come back then know that I will miss you and I have so appreciated and loved reading your blog. Happy New Year to you and your family. xo, Nan

Dear Amandajean,
I am so sad that you are finishing your posts here. You're an amazingly talented and productive person and sharing this space with you has been a joy. As someone who has stopped and started her blog several times, I know just where you are coming from. It can be so hard to find a balance, that works!! I closed my small business earlier this year (also unpaid work:) and I haven't looked back once. In fact, I have loved it and felt so liberated by my choice to do so. I know you'll feel that way too, which is why I am also happy for you to finish crazy mom quilts. I know you will only be going on to bigger and better things anyway. I often think of stopping as well but I love that my blog acts as a record of the things I've made in such a complete way...but as you can see I pick it up and drop it when it suits my schedule!
You and this space have been a source of inspiration, information and sheer quilting pleasure. Thank you for all the hard work you've put into it and for spreading the love! Good luck for 2010...you're going to have a great year!!

Because of your blog I made my first quilt this year for my first baby and plan on making many more quilts. I never would have had the courage to even try. I wish you the very best with your next adventure.

I am so sad that you are calling this quits!! You were the very first quilting blog I ever came across, and I spent the next 3 days reading every blog posting you wrote. All your work has totally inspired me in so many ways. I will really miss reading it on a daily basis. You were always the first blog I would read every day. Sigh... All the best in the future.

Denice said...

seriously amanda what will i do without you? you inspired me to get out my WIP's. you taught me how to *pin-baste* a quilt, machine quilt(how many times have i watched that tutorial?), bind - and how to do those corners! that tutorial was totally awesome. you were the one who suggested a pieced backing and what a success that has been. then, after you taught me to stipple you suggest not stippling? wow. i haven't wrapped my head around that one yet. who on earth will inspire me? i feel like we are breaking up.

I can't imagine not being able to read your posts and see your gorgeous quilts (although I'll be stalking your flickr for sure)... i guess i will just have to read your old posts over and over again!

I have put your flickr account address in my favourites.

Will miss you -- have enjoyed watching your space. I can imagine the pressure with such a following -- I assume it probably felt like you were quilting *for* the blog instead of just quilting because you love it. Hope any (perhaps imagined by me) pressure is gone and you enjoy your craft and family etc etc. (Heck, I've just been blogging for a little while and it is a lot of pressure!)

Crazy mom,
I have been a fan of Denyse Schmidt for years and would look at her web page over and over and wish I could be as creative as she is. Then, I came across your blog and was instantly enthralled. You gave me the courage to try. I'm almost finished with my first quilt and I couldn't be more excited. Its a nine patch - much like the ones you did. So, thanks for the tutorials, the inspiration, and the courage. I'll miss your blog but thank you for what you have given me - an artistic way to express myself.
