This quilt is so very pink. I LOVE it.
It is for my monochromatic quilt series, which has been so much fun. You can see more of the series here. Still to come in the series: red, orange, purple, and brown.
The pieced back is from my stash. I had bought a green polka dot for the backing, but I changed my mind at the last minute and came up with this instead. I like it because it matches the scrappy feel of the front. Someday, though, I am going to try a contrasting (but coordinating) color for the back of a quilt.
I used the from back to front quilting technique on this.
Overall, it went very well. I didn't have tension issues using this technique except for one time, and that time was so bad that I would have had to rip out whether it was on the back or the front. I felt like it was easier to quilt it randomly, which was what I was after. Sometimes I think I subconsciously follow the seam lines on the front, and it is hard to keep it random. The one thing that was a little tricky was the bottom (which is the front of the quilt) got puckered a few times along the edges because it was smaller than the top. So I had to do a bit of stitch ripping and then I ended up quilting it from the reverse side. And just a few times there were a few ridges of seams that hung up a bit in the face plate of my machine, but it was pretty minor.
All in all, it was a good experiment and I am glad that I tried it.
Gorgeous as usual! I still can't get over how you get these things done so quickly! I'm trying to catch up on the Seeing Stars Quiltalong... I'm working on #5 today!
ReplyDeleteIt's gorgeous! I really like this one...
ReplyDeleteWhat is the front to back quilting?
As I am facing down my first totally scrappy quilt, this has been great inspiration (and comfort!) that it can be done. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLOVE it! What a talent you have!
ReplyDeleteHow pretty!
ReplyDeleteI have been looking at the star blocks from a lot of the people here and they are so pretty. Everyone is doing such a great job!
may I ask what machine you use?
ReplyDeleteLOVE the quilt...love all your quilts. thanks for the inspiration.
Looks wonderful! I like the idea of stitching from the back.
ReplyDeletegorgeous as always. i love the bright pink back!!
ReplyDeleteI love your color series and the pink is just fantastic!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a happy, happy quilt!
ReplyDeleteOOhh, so pretty, I like that one. Of course, I like all the quilts you have made though.
ReplyDeleteTHAT IS YUMMY!!!
ReplyDeleteoooooh, pink
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! The randomness is just spectacular!
ReplyDeleteI love your monochromatic series. I love them all, but so far the green one is my fave.
ReplyDeleteLOVING the pinkiness. Just gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI can see (from a non-quilter's view) that it would be easy to subconsciously follow seam lines when quilting. I like that you tried something different.
That turned out so nice! When you are all finished with these quilts I'd love to see a photo of them all stacked together. What a pretty site that would be.
ReplyDeletetine,
ReplyDeleteback to front quilting is basically quilting with the back side up rather than the front side. I basted it with the front taped on the floor, then added the layer of batting and then the backing was on the top. I pinned it and quilted it with the backing on top. does that make sense? originally the intent with that technique is to be able to follow the design of the backing fabric to give you a guide of how to quilt it. I just tried it to make it easier to quilt because the top had so many seams in it.

nettie,
ReplyDeleteI use a JUKI TL-98 Q that I LOVE. It's straight stitch only, but it is a professional grade machine. I use it to piece and to quilt all my quilts. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone who is in the market for a new one.

What a wonderful quilt! So happy and pink. I love how you pieced the back as well-- it just works beautifully. Your work is so inspiring!
ReplyDeleteMy vote is to try out a contrasting backing with your upcoming brown quilt ... maybe a robin's egg blue? Or some more pink? Or purple? Hmmm ... I think the fabrics I am using for the quilt-a-long are influecing me ...
ReplyDeleteLove it! The pink makes me so happy!
ReplyDeleteAJ
ReplyDeleteI love this one but I KNOW I am gonna love your red one!!!!
Lissa
lovely quilt..........
ReplyDeleteVery very pretty! I'm interested to read that you sew with a professional Juki - I used one of these in an upholstery course I did a few years ago - it was awesome - makes domestic sewing machines look almost holly hobby-like! What are you going to do with your monochromatic quilts when they are done - hang them together? That would be so striking!
ReplyDeleteLovely monochromatic quilt! I can't wait to see your other ones as you complete them.
ReplyDeletelily boot,
ReplyDeleteI have given one away, with plans to give away another. two of them will be used in my home. the rest? to be determined. :)

Amandajean, I love all your quilts but I think the thing I love best about looking at your quilts is the tiny little hands holding it up. They are just too precious.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt!!
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt. I am always partial to pink, so it's no surprise I love it. But really, this could be in Anthropologie!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the pink! How fresh and fantastic.
ReplyDeleteAJ,
ReplyDeleteWhat size needle do you use for machine quilting? I use an 80 for piecing, but have some machine quilting needles that are a 90. Is 90 standard for machine quilting? Do you use an 80 for piecing or a 70??
it's gorgeous (as always!).
ReplyDeletearizona,
ReplyDeleteI use either a 80 or a 90 (whichever I have on hand) for piecing and quilting, I don't change them out for each task.
It's lovely, I know how ya like the pink! :) I am just staring down sandwiching Kayla's turning twenty, and dreading it beyond belief.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. All that pinky goodness would have my three year-old son dancing with joy. :)
ReplyDeleteSo pretty!!
ReplyDeletefinally I was able to catch up with the rest of the blocks for the quilt-along. Thanks so much.
Oh...this quilt...I just love it...even more now than the last time...dont know ..but it makes me happy!! Well done!!

ReplyDeleteI love this quilt and especially the pieced backing! :-)
ReplyDeleteThis is my type of quilt. Just randomly placing fabrics. Just gorgeous. I also love the way everyone is patching the backs as well. Great way to use up all fabrics.

ReplyDeleteHallo,
ReplyDeleteI'm Claudia from Germany and your pink scrapy quilt is so cute. My daughter (4) loves it soo much too, and now I ask you, how to make it? Have you a pattern? I have so many pink scraps and my daughter wish a quilt. So please help us. :)
Claudia
I LOVE the pink the best so far out of your monochromatic quilts. I love the randomness of it and the pieced backing. I like the way it puckered, that makes a quilt seem more cozy to me. I can't wait for the next one!
