But also since I handquilt using a lap hoop, my quilts spend considerable amounts of time on the floor. Even with the floors being carpeted, the quilts pick up dust and lint. And of course, there's the dog hairs .... I wouldn't even dream of not washing before giving b/c of the hands all over it factor. it's just more hygenic, particularly if it's going to a baby. It's also the first time I traced a stencil for the majority of the quilting, so rather than try to erase it all, I washed the quilt. It turned out fantastic! However when I make a quilt for someone else I do wash the quilt before I give it to them.
