The winner of the fabric is...number 5, Regi. Thanks to all of you who played along!
Now, onto some quilting progress...
Despite my sick kids, (we've had strep, fever, flu [ewww!] and a cold going around) I finally finished my swell quilt top.
I debated a long time about the layout. I wasn't feeling the zig zag...so on Sunday night I played around with about 4 different layouts and this was my favorite. I love the vintage feel of it. I still want to do a zig zag quilt sometime, but in my mind, this wasn't the right fabric combination for it.
I used 4 swell charm packs (32 squares in each) and i paired the squares with cream fabric (quilter's only cotton in the color parchment-from JoAnn's) and made them into triangles. Triangles are not my favorite, but I think it will be worth it. The layout is 14 by 18 blocks. It measures about 56" x 72", which means I will have one more to add to my lap quilt collection. But in my defense, I did have this one started before the beginning of this year. I already have the backing (and binding) in my stash, so I'm hoping to finish this quilt soon.
So sweet! I love it.
ReplyDeleteHey, you've inspired me to give away some fabric on my blog too! Check it out!
I like it very much! Making triangles scares me a bit :)
ReplyDeleteElena and me will definately be starting your quilt-a-long next week. It's our very first one but your explanations are SO good we decided to dare.
Thanks.
so pretty!
ReplyDeletehope your sickies are feeling better soon
oh, i love the swell fabric!! the layout is perfect too.
ReplyDeletei hope your family is feeling better. no fun when everyone gets sick.
Oh! I'm so sorry, I forgot to say that I hope your children get well soon, I'ts so sad to see our little ones sick.
ReplyDeleteI hope the kiddos start to feel better soon.
ReplyDeleteI love the quilt top!
Congratulations to Regi!
You always make things that look so easy, and makes me want to make them. This is so not good, as I usually have no time. But I love to imagine making them, and I LOVE going to Joann and picking out fabric (in my mind) for each of the projects. Thanks for your contributions to my imagination!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Regi! I love your quilt top. It is, well, swell!
ReplyDeleteI like the layout, and agree, very vintage-y. Hope everyone is feeling well soon!
ReplyDeleteThis is the design I did for a vintage mini quilt. Love it!
ReplyDeleteCeleste
I have always enjoyed the simple blocks put together. It looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteIt's adorable CrazyMom!
ReplyDeleteOh, and you spelled my name wrong...it's not r-e-g-i, it's a-n-n-a. Not to worry though, there is a r-e-g-i out there and I'm sure she'll take great care of my prize!!!
Have you ever used the thangles triangle papers? When you're making scrappy quilts the strips are small enough where you don't need to cut alot of paper, like the roll of triangle papers. The accuracy is unbelieveable. The roll of papers is great when you need to make alot of the same. The top is beautiful. Feel better.
ReplyDeleteYou can't go wrong with that layout. It's a classic. I can't wait to see it quilted.
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping you and yours feel better very soon.
I'm making a baby quilt with triangles too! I was thinking to do it pinwheel style but in the end decided to do the same layout as yours.
ReplyDeleteHope everyone is better soon!
Love it. You are right, it does have a vintage feel to it.
ReplyDeleteLove the fabrics in this one...
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Regi..
Thimbelanna's comment -- too funny.
Sending good vibes to the AJ household -- and some Chix Soup
Oh I like this layout better than the zigzag
ReplyDeleteLove the soft colors on this one and I agree it feels very vintage! Triangles are currently the bane of my existence (hourglass quilt!) so I admire your perfect piecing!
ReplyDeleteI'm really digging this quilt top. I think I'm going to figure out which charm squares I'm going to use... get me some solid cotton and get to work. I really like it!
ReplyDeleteSounds like way too many sickies in one house. Not fun! But your quilt sure is!! Very cute! :)
ReplyDeleteI hope you have been spared! Still a bunch of sickies are no fun - hope they are snuggled under a few of your quilts napping the day away :)
ReplyDeleteYou top is very fun - I love the simplicity of it!
Lovely quilt! I hope your kiddos are feeling better:)
ReplyDeleteI agree that it has a vintage feel. Looks like some grandma cut up her aprons to make a quilt. I love it!
ReplyDeleteso sorry about the bugs going around your house too...same thing here. love your swell quilt...some of my favorite fabric ever!
ReplyDeleteLike it - you always inspire me to make more quilts! Hope your household is well soon.
ReplyDeleteI love the colors!! I am such a sucker for pink, red, blue and green. I am making my daughter's quilt in those same colors.
ReplyDeleteHope eveyone feels well soon again.
ReplyDeleteJust have to comment on your give-away. Did you ever in your wildest thoughts think there would be over 900 people clammering for your fabric? You must have had a wild day reading all the comments. Guess that makes you the Queen of the Bloggers. Congratulations!! And, yes I bow to the Queen....love checking out your blog.
It looks GREAT amandajean!!! I got to you through my link!!!!!!:) I'm sooooooo excited! You are such an AWESOME teacher!!:) Was great hanging with you today. Glad I got to share some things with you!";)

Sorry to hear you have had the crud at your house. Hope everyone is feeling better now!
ReplyDeleteI love the layout of the quilt. I too like the vintage feel it has. :)
Such sweet colors. You picked a perfect layout. A zigzag would need stronger contrast maybe.
ReplyDeleteHope everyone is better at your house soon!
I too love this - it is clean and crisp and reminds me of summers of my youth- beautiful - and inspirational
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Regi on winning the pretty fabrics. I hope the kids are feeling better soon. I love that Swell fabric & your quilt top looks great. Now Urban Chiks have come out with a new line (Sweet) that reminds me alot of their Swell fabric line. Oh where does it all end? LOL
ReplyDeleteI love the colour combo... :)
ReplyDeleteDang, I didn't win :( hehe
ReplyDeleteI have a question for you. What are your favorite sizes of lap quilts? Is the 56"x72" big enough to cover two adults (or, a few sick kids!) to cuddle on the couch? The blankets I have are, well, less than ideal in size and/or proportion & I want to make some new ones, but I need a little guidance :)
These triangles are really sweet and do have a vintage feel. Very fresh.
ReplyDeletebeautiful!
ReplyDeletebarbara brown
I am with you I love the vintage type look too. This is so pretty!
ReplyDeleteThat is an awesome combo! Beautiful work as always...
ReplyDeleteI love this patchwork pattern. And I like how you quilts have such a graphic design, very close to my style.
ReplyDeleteYou are right...I like this layout better than the zigzag. I'm currently going through my stash and you've inspired me to host a giveaway to clear out some of the fabrics that I'm no longer in love with. I'll probably post it this weekend.
ReplyDeleteHey ~ have you ever seen a Roman Stripes pattern? Your new quilt reminds me of that. You can see my favorite here: http://maryquilts.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/amish-stripes-and-strings.pdf
Oh, am I super jealous right now! I used up all my Swell Fabric making doll blankets and so wish the fabric was still available! This quilt looks stunning, have fun finishing!
ReplyDeleteIt's so cute! I've just finished making a journal cover (and stipple quilted it!) with some of my coveted Swell fabrics. Love the triangular look. :)
ReplyDeleteI love this one! Can't wait to see it all finished.
ReplyDeleteI just love your style so much. When I found your blog a few weeks ago, it inspired me to dig out all of my unfinished quilts and actually finish them.
Hope you're all feeling better soon.
Thanks for the possibility and grat to Regi! : D
ReplyDeleteHope, you'll getting better soon.
Your quilt looks great! :)
Congrats Regi,
ReplyDeleteLove this quilt too, it doesn't look too hard :) and love the fabric combination
way fun and cute ! ooxx`jodi
ReplyDeletekatie k,
ReplyDeletei think the ideal lap quilt size you are describing is actually a twin size quilt. i'm trying really hard to start make more quilts into twin size, because they are perfect for snuggling for two (and a few little kiddies, too). so about 63" x 88".
hope this helps!
aj
Congrats to the winner...
ReplyDeleteI really like that quilt - it is amazing how pretty half square triangles can look....
Awww I hope the children are feeling much better soon, its no fun at all when our little ones are sick.
ReplyDeleteThe newest quilt top is wonderful... i love the fabrics you used and the triangles as well, and last but not least ..Thank you, thank you so much for the awesome fabrics... I cant wait to play with them.
